The Dolphins confirmed the arrival of a new defensive player on Monday when they formally announced that they’d claimed former Panthers cornerback Bene Benwikere off of waivers.

They also announced the corresponding roster move, which will likely end the season of one of their opening day starters. Linebacker Koa Misi has been placed on injured reserve after missing the last two games with a neck injury.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports Misi has seen by at least one specialist and is expected to see others to get further information on his injury.

Misi will be eligible to return to action in eight weeks if the Dolphins decide to designate him as their player to return from I.R., but may prefer to use that spot on defensive tackle Earl Mitchell if he’s recovered from his calf injury. Mitchell will be able to return after Week Nine while it will be after Week 13 before Misi could play again.

Misi started the first two games for Miami and made 22 tackles. The 2010 second-round pick also ended last season on injured reserve and has not played in all 16 games of a season since his rookie year.
