Evan Mathis to have ankle surgery, unlikely to be back this year

Cardinals offensive lineman Evan Mathis was already on injured reserve, and it looks like his season is over, if not his career.

According to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Cards coach Bruce Arians said Mathis was going to have ankle surgery and wasn’t expected to come back in time to be activated this year.

Since the Cardinals have other players on IR (specifically Chris Johnson and Tyvon Branch) who figure to be ready to return sooner, that makes it likely that Mathis has played his last game for the Cards.

The 34-year-old guard, originally a third-round pick of the Panthers, has also played for the Bengals, Eagles and Broncos.
