Colin Kaepernick back in the starting lineup for the 49ers

The 49ers would take it if Colin Kaepernick takes another knee during a game.

Because it would mean their starting quarterback is closing out a win.

Coach Chip Kelly just told reporters that Kaepernick would return to the starting quarterback job for the 49ers, replacing Blaine Gabbert.

Kaepernick hasn’t started a game since Nov. 1, 2015, and an offseason full of surgeries kept him from taking the job away from the ineffective Gabbert sooner.

Since then, he’s become a national weathervane, after protesting police brutality and racial inequality by taking a knee during the national anthem.

Now we’ll see if he can lead a team on the field again, and return to the form he showed when he helped them to a Super Bowl.

  1. This is smart of chip, put Kaep out there hopfully he does well enough to get a decent draft pick from the browns for him. then get the QB he wants for his offense.

  2. Why on earth would they say anything before kickoff? It makes no sense for them to tell everyone at this point. Kap or anyone else if they leave it unknown they have the element of surprise on their side.

This is from a Bills fan.

  3. The climb starts now, as I’ve expressed before he would be starting soon, he should have been starting before now. There is still time to salvage the season. #GoNiners #NobodyhasitbetterthanUS

  4. Oh joy, the oppressed 20-something millionaire gets more air time.
The fans should show their displeasure by boycotting 9ers games. I hope they lose every game that he starts.

  5. Well, he won’t be taking any knees on the field. At least not during the game. Well, at least now he doesn’t have to seek attention so desperately now…

  6. Well, now that it’s official…

I’m hoping my Bills give him the same treatment as Brisset: shut down the run game, plug up the middle holes. Force Kaepernick to read multiple packages, shifts and zone blitzes. It worked on a more talented Patriots roster.

  7. In 2015, the Seahawks beat Blaine Gabbert in Seattle and Colin Kaepernick in Santa Clara.

In 2016, the Seahawks have beaten Blaine Gabbert in Seattle so far.

    Go ahead, make our day.

  8. Honestly, what do we stand to lose here? Absolutely nothing. Blaine should switch to TE and extend his NFL career that way. If Kap fails he’s done in this league too. Harbaugh was the absolute perfect guy to coach him. His play calling was catered to Kap. I don’t know if anyone else can provide that level of engagement for this guy.

  9. The entire 49er organization needs to put forth a professional level football team. Ownership is stealing from the faithful with their new stadium and the most in effective ownership and management in the league.

  10. “protesting police brutality and racial inequality”

He is actually “protesting PERCEIVED police brutality and racial inequality”. Some of his examples are justifiable, some of the examples are just flat out not true.

  11. …It will be fun to watch him suck worse than Gabbert.

Get rid of York! Give it back to Eddie or the organization will suck for years

  12. I am not one of the 49er faithful but knowing that they held him out until they could lower their financial liability with a reworked contract tells me money is more important than wins.

The great franchises don’t do this.

  13. So does this mean he has gained back the weight that Chip was so concerned about? Or is Kelly more concerned that if things don’t improve the next major weight loss in SF will be the organization dropping a Chip?

  14. Not trying to be offensive, but I think this is the wrong week to try it. The Niners are flying to the east coast, and are playing a team whose hallmark is pounding the ball (against their 31st ranked run D) and disguised coverage with a starter who hasn’t played a snap in close to a year and who has lost a lot of muscle.

If things go badly starting out (Chips high tempo three and outs) and the Bills keep pounding and driving at home it could get messy in a hurry.

  15. Oh noooo, what are all the butthurt “fans” going to do now? Can’t watch anymore now that a monster is on the field.

Same “fans” were high fiving Greg Hardy sacks and Ray Rice TDs.

  16. I just want to know what Phil Simms has to say about this move.

FWIW, they announce things like this because it’ll be obvious when he is taking all of the first team reps in practice, much of which is open to the media.

  17. I”m not a pro oddsmaker or anything but Bills over 49ers is now your lock of the week. How couldn’t it be? Buffalo is already playing some spectacular football.

  18. I’m sure his teammates are thrilled he’s their leader with his Afro, 30lb underweight frame, and worlds slowest release…how can they not respect the man???

  19. @RegisHawk I know you’ve only been paying attention since 2012 (and that’s OK) but in the interest of enjoying an entertaining rivalry for the forseeable future, you’d be better off going back to the AFC West and playing the Raiders twice a year

  20. For his sake, I hope he doesn’t have to face any defensive players who served time in the military.

This might be the first time since Tim Tebow that one player has so many people rooting against him.

  21. He should be good to go. He is used to being on the ground (starting with the Anthem.) He will be on his rear end the rest of the day also.

  22. I am all for the First Amendment. However, as a Bills season ticketholder, I can tell you for sure that Kaepernick is lucky that it hasn’t snowed in Buffalo yet. I know our fans, they are not going to be kind to him this weekend. If it were snowing, we might have a security and safety issue because I am 100% confident the ice balls would be flying…Instead, I will be exercising my 2nd Amendment right and booing the hell out of him at the stadium….

I used to wonder the same thing, but it’s because it’s obvious. Portions of practice are open to the media. They would know who is the starter based on the reps.

    ______________

I would imagine the secret would be out when members of the media see #7 taking all the first team reps at practice during the week. Chip announcing it means we found out approximately 30 minutes before we would have anyway.

  25. So the race for the number 1 pick has begun?

Gonna be a barn burner tween Cleveland, SF, Miami, Chicago, and the Jets for the Philly draft party.

  26. SuperBowl Bound!!! LMAO… If anything games will be more exciting. We know he can throw deep, unlike Gabbert, the question is if he can be accurate and consistent. As long as Balke is gone this year, it will be a win for the 49ers.

  27. Not a Bills fan, but pulling for them this week.

    I’ll check the score…. won’t watch another 9ers or Seahwks game again….

  28. I got news for you 9ers fans, Neither Young, Montana, nor Otto Graham could win consistently with what this team has for talent. Heck, with Brady or Peyton at their prime, they’d be lucky to end up 5-11

  29. Have to root for the Bills here. If this clown’s corrosive ideology prevails the word patriot will be dubbed a microaggresion and the usual suspects will start calling my team the “Northeast Regionals.”

  30. So funny how hurt some of you are that a man had the audacity to protest the treatment he receives because of his color. If we are becoming the moral police you better know that at least half of these rosters will be empty. That dude hasn’t been arrested, and isn’t breaking any laws. What exactly is that you hate? And stop that BS with the military. I’m prior military with a military family including my grandfather, father, wife, and nephews. Just stop because I don’t see you out there protesting the way we are treated when we come HOME. Where are the jobs? Where is the outrage when there is no medical coverage? So much hypocrisy from some of you clowns.

  31. It will most likely go the way it has already gone – flash of early success that then winds down and falls short.

  32. “Let’s bring back Mike Singletary as head coach, while we’re at it.”
    YESSSSS
He could pull his a$$ out again, which would inspire an epic Super Bowl run

I wondered that myself but it’s not like the Bills have any film of Kaep in Kelly’s system to look at. But still, yeah. Why mention it t all? These guys need any advantage they can get at this point.

Even as a Patriot’s fan I’ll be rooting for the Bills like I always do (except when facing Pats). Always liked the organization from the days of Andre Reed, Thurman Thomas, Jim Kelly, Bruce, etc…classy guys.

I will point out that stopping an injured rookie in his second game ever isn’t exactly bragging material but a ‘W’ is a ‘W.’ You did score 16 points and a shut out is tough to come by.

  36. @sweep:

Hey, he was good enough to polish off the Texans and had a surrounding roster that helped them go 3-0. I might root against the Pats but I will take the group of Edelmam, Blount, Bennet and Gronk well over Hyde, Smith and Kerley.

Also your D also looks legit. 49ers have allowed 4 straight 100 yard rushers and McCoy ran up 150 last week.

Or: We beat a Jim Tomsula coached team twice last year and, well, Blaine Gabbert again this year.

Nothing but the highest of standards

  38. so now this lowlife is the face of the 49ers franchise. Been a Niner fan for 35 years but I will root against this team for the first time this coming sunday.

  39. I’m just curious – at this point, you niner fans don’t find it embarrassing using that “who’s got it better than us” slogan? The Browns are close to having it better than you.

  40. Kaepernick won’t be the answer. He was benched for a reason. The hope coming from Kaepernick fans is laughable. No Kaepernick fan realizes the success the 49ers enjoyed when he started had nothing much to do with Kaepernick. The team was good enough to win with anyone at quarterback. Maybe Chip will bring back the option gimmick? If so, it is over and done with. Teams know how to stop it. Since teams have stopped the read option, Kaepernick floundered because he is not a passer. Anyway, have fun hoping. Nothing will change because there is not enough talent.

  41. Let’s not kid anyone. This is being done to pass the blame for 49ers being awful onto Kaepernick and to deflect attention from Chip Kelly and Jed York for putting together a disaster of a team. Hmmm. Kaepernick is black and Kelly and York are white. What could possibly account for them wanting to push the blame on Kaepernick?

  42. Have they figured out how to get all that hair in his helmet. Does not seem possible. This Tyler Wright guy though still holds the record. Maybe not for long.

  43. Oh boy, I would say Buffalo might be one of the last places I’d want to be as a Fidel Castro tee-shirt wearing anti-American. I’d expect Rex will have something special for him as well.

  44. I agree with Duane Wade that the group should be called “Enough is Enough” if you want to focus on unwarranted police force, but when you call the group BLM and it takes millions from Globalist George Soros you know it’s goal is to do more harm than good; namely, increase racism in society and further divide people.

I’m not a billionaire like George Soros and you won’t find me in Wikileaks funneling money to Hillary from the Middle East, but how I can be heard is that I will vote with my money on the NFL and not support a sport that allows for such actions by CK and others.

  45. I don’t give a damn about Kaepernick.
I just want the 49ers to win more games than the Bears so we can draft one of the top 2 QBs

  46. So many racists on here….omg if it was a white dude kneeling..oh i’m sorry there were ya’ll didn’t bring that to any ones’ attention. I as a niner fan since 1980 can tell you i haven’t been in love with Kaep’s play but i am in love with his right to kneel! Ya’ll crack me up. We will at least see what we have with him so we know what to do going forward.psst buffalo…show me a lombardi …chile please.

  47. This guy is 100% dedicated to football, his head is totally in it. This is going to go well! Right guys?…. Guys?….. Back me up.

  49. I am looking forward to the lowest TV viewership for the season…

almost as eagerly as I am looking forward to everyone connected with the NFL to blame poor ratings on global warming.

  50. @Hollywood26:
The hypocrisy you’re seeing is really closet racism that the scab has been pulled off of. A lot of people have been emboldened by Donald Trump that it’s okay to show that they’re racist. Of course they want to say it’s something else but we know what it really is.

The biggest racists are always Leftists (in Hollywood or elsewhere) because all they see is race and define and categorize people by it. TRUMP is all about America and being for Americans, regardless of your race.

If BLM was called All Lives Matter of End Police Brutality it would have a lot more main stream support, but it was intentionally called BLM to further divide people and to manipulate small minds like CK.

  53. I hope the Bills pump the National Anthem every opportunity they get. Are you going to take a knee every time, Kaep?

  54. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some of the Bills lay down for Kaepernick. Most of the players in the league support Kap’s freedom, and they’re not too cool with Rex Ryan’s support for a racist presidential candidate. Should be interesting to watch.

Well, if you must know (because obviously an 8-year-old such as yourself lacks the ability to find out for herself), the all-time series record stands at 21-15 in the Seahawks’ favor. But since most of those games came long before you were potty-trained, I figured the knowledge would do you no good. Now, go play pokemon and leave the message board to the grown-ups.

  59. New Era Stadium will be so loud that the 49ers will have to use hand signals the entire game… Kaepernick is going to want to cry by the time he boards his plane.
