There’s been uncertainty about when and if Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston would be ready to return to the team this season after having surgery on his ACL early in the offseason, but it looks like we can drop if from the list of options.

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder announced on Wednesday that Houston has been cleared to start doing football activities. That won’t mean a return to practice for Houston this week as he is on the physically unable to perform list and its rules dictate he must remain on it through Week Six before becoming eligible to practice.

“He’s in pretty good shape,” coach Andy Reid said of Houston. “He’s running around and doing some things.”

When the Chiefs do get Houston on the practice field, they’ll have a 21-day window to add him to the 53-man roster or shut him down for the remainder of the season. Assuming he does continue to be in pretty good shape, he should be part of the Kansas City defense in the second half of the season.
