Jason Witten takes the high road on Martellus Bennett

It was months ago that Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett said of his former teammate and Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, “I hated Jason Witten. I appreciated his game, but I always hated him.” But while Bennett’s comments are months old, ESPN has recently chosen to play them on a nearly endless loop to promote a television feature about Bennett and his brother, and so ESPN asked Witten to respond this week.

Unsurprisingly, Witten didn’t have much of a response. Witten said he’s too busy to watch the ESPN interview of Bennett and his brother, Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett. And Witten declined to take the bait on hating Martellus, saying that he considers him a good player.

“Busy schedule,” Witten said. “I’ll make sure to get around to that real quick to see it. I did hear about it. Marty is a good player. He really is. He enjoys entertaining, but I’m glad he’s in a good place now and he’s having a good year so far. He is. He’s a good football player.”

Witten is wisely avoiding a war of words with Bennett. A response from Witten would only serve to give ESPN something else to play on an endless loop.

  1. Jason Witten is one of the best TEs ever. He is 10th all time in receptions for WR and TE. It’s not a surprise Bennett couldnt beat him out as a rookie. I know this interview was in the summer so it’s not going to be held against him as much now but it probably isnt please Belichick. Either way Bennett hasnt said much since the season started, but it could just be a matter of time.

  2. Martellus Bennett is a good player, but most likely has very few friends. The NFL is not purely based on talent, because If it was you would see players like Josh Gordon, Ray Rice & Justin Blackmon ruling the league… Teams and coaches like to see players that are able to get along… Bennett is big-mouthed and has a really bad case of people skills… otherwise he’d be a one team player, but instead is on his fourth team.

  3. Martellus is a pretty funny and it’s fun to to listen to his interviews as a Patriot. It’s such a refreshing change from the usual Pat’s speak but it’s obvious that most of the time he is just trolling the media with his answers.

  4. The real shame is that Witten wasted his HOF career on a team that’s been .500 since Aikman retired.

The only reason he hates Jason Witten is because he was the reason Bennett didn’t get much playing time when he was in Dallas.
…………………………………………………………………………………………That was pretty bad coaching in Dallas. I imagine teams are not happy right now trying to defend Gronk and Bennett on the field at the same time. In Dallas, Bennett was used as the blocking TE and he really became quite good at it but was unhappy because Whitten was the TE catching all the passes. Bennett may have hated Whitten but he loves playing with Gronk in New England.

  6. Martellus makes the mistake of not compromising himself and his personality and people hate it because they like robots that are trained to say specific phrases and have the same personality and same interests. Unless people actually think all these athletes have the same thoughts that come to their minds about every question asked of them.

  7. Bennett just sounds like a fool. You hated Witten because you are soft and couldn’t beat him onto the field. You don’t go after a class act and a sure Hall of Famer without sounding petty. Go away…

  8. All Bennett really said was that he hated Witten because he went to him for help and never got it. Well, it’s not Witten’s job to help Bennett. That’s the tight end coach’s job. Hard to blame Bennett for feeling a bit hurt though. Maybe that’s one of the things you don’t whine about.

  9. Heaven forbid (!) any inference that ESPN is trying to conjure up fake issues out of nothing at all (cough, BountyGate) as a standard tabloid journalism method (cough, DeflateGate) for trying to slow the death spiral in their subscriber numbers.

  10. Anyone who watched Hard Knocks during Bennett’s rookie season knows that he owes a lot of the blame to himself. He wasn’t mature enough to handle life in the NFL yet. The Cowboys definitely didn’t do themselves any favors in how they handled him though. And if you told me Jason Witten was more interested in being the star of the show at TE then helping a rookie who needed a hand I’d believe it.

  11. Martellus was mediocre to decent until he landed with the best organization in the NFL, The Pats!! Maybe he hated Witten because he was a better player?

  12. ATTENTION fellow Bear fans: I told you so. Many were angry & upset when Fox wanted him gone & now you see why. He’s got talent galore, but he’s got a screw loose to go along with it. He’s a disruption to the unity of a team because he’s all about himself . He’s the typical “when things are going bad for him, he’ll make sure they’re going bad for eveyone”. He can’t stop himself……

  13. As a Giants fan, I’ve seen too much of Jason Whitten, lol.

As a football fan, Jason Whitten is going to be remembered as one one of the best TEs ever. And if you think about it, there have been a lot of really good, durable TEs over the years.

I think the comment that Whitten has languished on a .500 team is pretty valid, too. Imagine if he was on the Patriots for all those years.

  14. And that’s the difference between a future HOF who is relevant because he plays great and a guy who is relevant because he runs his mouth.

  15. Poor Jason…..what a waste playing for a team with a QB with a 2-4 playoff record….one more victory than Tim Tebow. Oh well, it could be worse, he could be playing on the team with the red-headed QB who has never won even a single postseason game.

  16. The Bennett’s can say whatever they want because…….well you do the math….I will take one Jason Whitten over a team of Bennett’s any day….

  17. Imagine having Bennett under a rookie deal for $3M for 4 years with Witten on the other side with a young Romo throwing them the ball and not just tearing it up with 2 TE sets and winning at least one SB. One of the many reasons why Wade Phillips is a deservedly renowned DC and a marginal HC.

  18. as a pats fan, i cringed when i saw this. hopefully bennett tunes it down from here on out.

this was filmed this summer, but still.

walk softly and carry a big stick

nothing but respect for witten’s great career

  19. I think what Bennett said about Jason Witten actually says more about himself. Witten: great player; great man.

  20. Bennett is making millions. The last thing he should be talking about is how everyone else has dissed him in the past. He’s another example of a gifted athlete that has been blessed with something that less than 1% of the people in this world will ever experience. It’s called “counting your blessings”. When a person has nothing but complaints about everywhere he’s gone, maybe he should consider the common denominator in the equation! The old cliche’ rings loudly here: “No matter where I go, there I am”. Yo’, Martellus………SILENCIO! Just play!!

  21. Boris Yeltsin

‘He talks crap about everyone else in the league but plays for the most hated franchise.’

They are also the winningest franchise. Hmmmm…..is it possible there’s a correlation there?

Yep, there is. Thank you for your hate.

  22. The reason he said that he hated Whitten was that Whitten refused to help him. Someone said above that wasn’t Whitten’s job to help, but the TE coach instead. Sorry, but that’s being a bad veteran teammate. He must have felt threatened by Bennett. In NE, he has publicly said that Gronk has given him all the help he’s asked for. Too bad for Dallas that Whitten refused to help Bennett, imagine what that two TE monster set could have been. But, this is another reason why Dallas hasn’t won anything in a generation. Bad coaching, bad/underperforming teammates, and the worst GM in the NFL.

  23. Witten is every bit the man and football player that Martellus Bennett will never be, it is no surprise to this Cowboys fan that Witten had this response–only one I would expect from the future Hofer.

Okay. So why was he irrelevant with the Bears and Giants? Because the other TE’s wouldn’t help him?

Just talking about Whitten and the Cowboys. Article wasn’t about the Bears and Giants, and his performance/underperformance for either team.

1st ballot hof, 2 Walter Payton man of the year awards. Youre drunk, 12. Yrs old, or a Pats fan

  27. Sure… the Patriots are the most winningest franchise… since most Patriots fans became Patriots fans.

To the rest of us, the Cowboys are the winningest franchise in NFL history. The Patriots are floating around 7th or 8th or something.
