Packers downgrade James Starks to out vs. Cowboys

LANDOVER, MD - JANUARY 10: Running back James Starks #44 of the Green Bay Packers carries the ball against the Washington Redskins in the third quarter during the NFC Wild Card Playoff game at FedExField on January 10, 2016 in Landover, Maryland. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) Getty Images

The Packers will be without running back James Starks on Sunday.

Starks had been listed as questionable with a knee injury on yesterday’s injury report, but today the Packers officially announced that Starks is out for Sunday against the Cowboys.

It could get worse for the Packers, as Eddie Lacy is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. Lacy is expected to play, but it remains to be seen whether he can handle the kind of workload the Packers will want from him with Starks out.

The only other running back on the Packers’ roster is fullback Aaron Ripkowski, who has two career carries.

That’s what happens when teams have egos and think they can get by with just 2 HBs.

AFC guy so no dog in the fight but it sure seems like GB hasn’t caught to many breaks this season and in spite of the Romo & Bryant injuries (which have been addition by subtraction so far) Dallas has had things break there way.

Eddie cheeseburger will play and look awful lielke usually. Erin will complain about every play they don’t complete. It’s funny I thought Nelson was the fixer of the offense haha what a joke of a team and all thier fans are trolls.

If you watched any Packer games you would know that Cobb and Montgomery line up at HB regularly in every game.

GM dereliction of duty. Having a fullback is a wasted spot, when we always needed a quick-shifting, speedier half-back. Oh, right, put the $40mil WR back there to run into DL and OLB.

Ok….now I’m starting to think this is the beginning of the end for Green Bay. Seattle will blow out Atlanta, but Dallas looks like a winner in Green Bay

My Packers live and die by their passing game and don’t rely on the run. As Aaron continues to decline we will die a long slow death because Mike isn’t strong enough to sit him at any point. This is our future. A long, slow, depressing death spiral. We like those kinds of things here, don’t we? It’s our dark obsession. That’s why we allow it to be a part of our fan base. It’s who we are.

I take it you are one of the Packer faithful who really think TT’s success isn’t just because he had 2 1st ballot HoF QB’s.

Fact: Since Eddie Lacy has entered the League he has more yards and touchdowns than Adrian Peterson.
And at about 1/15th the price.

Odd to only carry two HB’s into the season. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised considering the odd roster construction at the beginning of the season for the packers. Maybe that’s changed with moves during the season, I don’t know. But at the start they only had 5 defensive lineman, 3 ILB’s, and if I recall a smaller than average number of backup OL’s.

Seems awfully risky to be thin at so many positions, especially with a lot of rookies (including a lot of UFA’s) at the backup slots. And this is a team that’s struggled to stay healthy pretty much year after year.

  27. skol4life says: Oct 15, 2016 9:28 PM

Fat Eddie is only good for 10 carries a game before he’s sucking O2 on the sideline anyway. That’s why they can’t hold a lead because their main RB is out in the 4th quarter due to fatness.

That would be a good question. Luckily, we have a bit of history to fall back on when looking for an answer. The last time the Packers had as many as 15 starters on IR the Packers and their fans indeed rallied around “next man up.” The Packers may actually have coined the phrase at that time (I don’t know that they did, but I can’t recall having heard it before then). The Packers then went on to win their 4th Super Bowl.

Currently, your Vikings have a handful of starters on IR, but nowhere near 15. Those starters include “one trick pony” Purple Jesus and young Theodore Bridgewater, who’s been replaced by Sam Bradford. Bradford is playing much better than Theodore ever played and may ever have played. Instead of rallying around your own team, you purples are still exhibiting your inferiority complex… and rightfully so. Your Vikings are also a long ways from winning their first Super Bowl.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask. There are plenty of my fellow Packer fans here that are knowledgeable enough to help you out.

I wouldn’t say that a couple of backs getting knocked out of the line up would be an elevator for Ray Rice to the roster.

Sorry for using the terms knocked out and elevator. It was completely unintentional.

Starks has had a pretty marginal start to the season anyway. A whoppin’ 24 carries for 42 yards … and Phat Eddie has been averaging 5.5 yds per on 54 carries. Phat Eddie is back to his old “self”. After a long run last week, a Giant linebacker intent on taking him down when Lacy was obviously headed out of bounds, ended up being flung to his backside by Lacy — who incidentally never left his feet.

Still, certainly not stats to prove the establishment of a running game – much to my dismay.

What I’d love to see, and it won’t happen in the era of “Madden/Arena” NFL football, is this Ripkowski kid out of Oklahoma hammer the ball into the center of the Cowboy defense today – repeatedly. He’s carried the ball only twice this season but last week, turned a 3 yard gain into a 13-yard gain against the Giants on a play that ended with 5 or 6 Giants being carried by this guy. It was a Rugby scrum … and a thing of beauty.
