Patriots place Jonathan Freeny on IR

Ruled out for Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury, Patriots linebacker Jonathan Freeny is now out for the year — or at least for the next eight weeks.

The team has placed linebacker Jonathan Freeny on injured reserve, along with tight end Greg Scruggs. One Patriots player per year may return from IR after eight weeks.

Freeny signed a two-year extension in late August, and he had appeared in all five regular-season games, with four starts.

The Patriots filled the two roster spots by elevating defensive end Geneo Grissom and defensive tackle Anthony Johnson from the practice squad.

  1. Kind of scary that the Pats place 2 players on IR and arguably become a stronger overall team in the process.

This is unfortunate for Freeney. After being waived by Miami, he developed a good niche for himself on special teams and as a reserve LB who can play multiple positions. As the season wears on and injuries mount, versatile players like Freeney become more valuable.

They are not a stronger team dressing D lineman Grissom and Johnson with LB’s Jamie Collins and Shea McClellin banged up and Freeny out.

  4. It’s too bad for Freeney, whom they seem to love, but the still have McClellin, Mingo and the intriguing ERoberts for LB depth. Vollmer and DLewis are on the PUP list, which means they can start practicing as late as wk 11 and be activated as late as wk 14. Last I read, DLewis they were optimistic about, Seabass, not so much. CFleming did a nice job last week though.

  5. Watch my guy Elandon Roberts blow up. Already doing more than I thought. Didn’t know him at draft time, checked out his college tape. Tackling machine, great instincts. On the small side, thought he’d be a special teamer at least at first, and maybe translate into a dime LB or a big in-the-box safety at the pro level. Been impressed with him so far.

  6. Dion Lewis is eligible to come of the PUP list this week and can play in week 7 if he is healthy. He was operated on in the third week of August with an estimated 8-10 week recovery. My guess is he plays in their 8th game.

  7. The Pats 8th game is the week before their bye. That’s a little optimistic. I’m thinking 12/4 at home vs the Rams may be more realistic for DLewis, and even then on a pitch count.
