Packers may give Cobb, Montgomery snaps at running back

Green Bay Packers v New England Patriots Getty Images

With James Starks out and Eddie Lacy hobbling with an injured ankle, the Packers may turn to a couple of wide receivers to play some running back.

Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb both acknowledged this week that they might take some snaps at running back today against the Cowboys.

“Honestly, I feel like we’ve always got to be ready,” Montgomery said, via ESPN. “I know I’m giving you a generic answer, but we’ve always got to be ready because you never know what could happen.”

Asked if he and Montgomery were preparing to play running back, Cobb answered, “Possibly.”

Montgomery doesn’t have much experience running the ball, but Cobb played some running back at Kentucky, ending his college career with 228 carries for 1,313 yards.

Starks will be out for more than one game, plus he hasn’t played that well so far this season. As a fan, I hate putting Cobb/Montgomery in the backfield. Why are they not bringing up the RB from the PS? There has got to be another RB out there worth bringing in who can actually play the position.

and nothing of significance value will be gained.

  3. goldenbear15 says: Oct 16, 2016 8:47 AM

Oh good McCarthy. Why don’t we just play both of them at the same time with one being a lead blocker up the middle so we can get more guys hurt! Then you can figure out why there are questions about the offense.

Ty Montgomery is a very rare athlete. He has the most inconsistent hands I think I’ve ever seen so I couldn’t rely on him as a WR, but I would have tried him at RB a long time ago. He’s too good to keep on the sidelines. Cobb is too valuable as a WR to risk getting injured. Let’s see if the coach is as smart as me. Lol

  5. tritz32 says: Oct 16, 2016 9:12 AM

Yea because those WR hand offs have been soooo productive right Mike? Especially when our RB is getting 5.4 yards/carry but for reasons unknown only gets the ball 15 times/game. smh…

The Packer’s bye week came too early. So did the Vikings.

Bye weeks should be near the middle of the season, not the first 1/4.

At least MN has time for some to heal up. Packers have a ton of season left with no break.

  7. longtimefanh8tr says: Oct 16, 2016 9:36 AM

This may be a blessing in disguise. Both can catch the ball out of the backfield unlike Starks.

  8. longtimefanh8tr says: Oct 16, 2016 9:44 AM

Ty Montgomery has the most inconsistent hands someone has every seen??? That someone hasn’t watched him much. First of all he has been targeted for passes only 18 times in his career!!!! I remember him dropping one pass as a rookie in 2015.

    Packers suck! Boys by 10.

Fat Eddy is not hobbling from and injury he is hobbling because his ankles, like last year, the year before cant support his fat ass.
He lost 15 pounds when he should have lost 30.

Starks is conveniently hurt when he sucks again. Time to get him out of dodge his tenure should be over.

Cheap ass Ted kept 7 receivers and cut two promissing running backs, and two of those receivers bench sit and the other two get a couple of snaps and people wonder why this team struggles. OMG

  12. immafubared says: Oct 16, 2016 9:52 AM

Dallas should romp today. Rogers will look lost again. His star is tarnished

  13. stellarperformance says: Oct 16, 2016 9:55 AM

The Packers are 3-1, playing at home, favored to win, and have one squeaker loss to an undefeated team on the road because of a phantom pass interference call.

    Relax.

Look at the Vike fans up early on a Sunday commenting on our backup RBs. The obsession is strong in them.

Roster flexibility. It’s why Thompson and McCarthy are the best in the business.

    Better football.

    For better people.

  17. hogbuster7 says: Oct 16, 2016 10:08 AM

Should have signed CJ Spiller. TT is too stubborn to do what’s needed to deliver another Lombardi trophy. I honestly think he’s satisfied with 1 trophy. That doesn’t fly in Titletown.

  18. lukeshow says: Oct 16, 2016 10:15 AM

Also, the irony of a packers fan complaining about pass interference is almost too much for the space time continuum to sustain.

Stellar I’ve gotta say I’m pretty disappointed in you. You’ve made some posts recently that have undermined the validity of your football insight. Blaming the loss to the Vikings due to a phantom PI call is something you’d critique others about, especially since the only reason the Packers were close in that game was BECAUSE of pass interference calls that sustained several Packer drives. Just take the loss as it is. Packers got out played. No more excuses. Don’t say “they got em early and were lucky.” Ultimately the Packers lost to a good defense and a QB who was on the team for 2 weeks.

There will be no guessing for the Dallas defense today. Pass, pass, pass.

I’m sure these two will be just fine at pass blocking.

    RIP Aaron.

  23. ragnarthemagnificent says: Oct 16, 2016 10:50 AM

After Cobb nearly snapped his spine last week why not put him in for some snaps at the most injury prone position? Stupid football for drunk people.

  24. 4sacroc says: Oct 16, 2016 11:03 AM

Well, you keep 7 receivers on roster who can’t get open, easiest thing to do is turn and HAND them the ball …

  25. wafflestomp says: Oct 16, 2016 11:16 AM

The Packers face a very tough opponent today and will have their hands full.
And even if they win you can bet the Barneys will be lining up the usual suspects for it.
    A. The hometown refs gifted their team another win.

    B. The Packers just got lucky, but nothing lasts forever and some day their luck will run out.

    C. The Cowboys were overrated and not a significant test anyway.

The simpletons from Minnesota are basic and predictable.
They’re incapable of nuance and clueless to the general acumen when it comes to the game of football.
But they do love to put it on display. skoLOL!

This. Yet Viking fans act as if they won the SB and have been a horrible nuisance in the comment section since. I don’t blame the pi as much as McCarthy not taking the fg. Who knows how that game would’ve ended had he elected to tie things up.

  27. pkrlvr says: Oct 16, 2016 11:28 AM

Viking fans still making Lacy fat jokes…classic. Meanwhile their star rb has missed more games then he’s played over the last three years.

  28. 4sacroc says: Oct 16, 2016 11:30 AM

McCarthy can spin all day how he wants to be a running team, but when you stack your roster with receivers (seven) and leave your RB position with a back coming off a bad season — and who also is prone to injury — and absolutely no depth you can see where he is BS-ing people.

Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda. Enough already. You know I hope you Cheesers lose today so you stop being obsessed with your ONE loss. Your talking points are getting beyond ridiculous.

They should have brought Justin Forrsett to town but instead the Lions get him. Why don’t they bring Ray Rice in as he’s still available or get a guy off the practice squad as that is why they are on there. Otherwise get them off the PS squad if their never going to play!

    Am I mistaken?

Hey Cheesebrain I wouldn’t ever come here if you stuck to script and didn’t bring my Vikings onto YOUR posts. Why do you do that? You do that because the Vikings and your deserved loss are in ur heads 24/7. My message is: Get over it already. It’s been a month.
