The NFL changed the rules regarding players allowed to return from injured reserve this season to allow teams to wait until a player had been on I.R. for six weeks before designating them to return rather than having them do it when the player first got hurt.
We’re six weeks into the season, so players who went on I.R. before the first game of the season can now be designated for return. According to multiple 49ers beat reporters, the 49ers have done that with cornerback Will Redmond.
Redmond was a third-round pick this April as the 49ers continued their trend of drafting players recovering from injuries. Redmond tore his ACL at Mississippi State last year, but was able to play in the preseason before the team decided he wasn’t ready for a regular season role.
Redmond would be eligible to play in Week Nine when the 49ers host the Saints.
