Gary Kubiak: Devontae Booker deserves more opportunities

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak got back to work on Monday and said he feels “very good” after taking last week off to deal with the complex migraine condition he was diagnosed with while in the hospital following the team’s Week Five loss to the Falcons.

Now that things are under control for Kubiak medically, his next order of business is getting the Broncos back on track after two straight losses. One of the areas where the Broncos would like to improve is in the run game as they’ve failed to top 89 yards in a game since the second week of the season.

On Monday, Kubiak suggested one of the ways the team will try to do that is by giving more time to rookie running Devontae Booker. Booker has 34 carries for 161 yards and eight catches for 65 yards while playing behind C.J. Anderson and Kubiak said those results call for more chances.

“When he’s had some opportunities he’s done some really good things,” Kubiak said, via ESPN.com. “As a young player, we’re trying to get him going as far as protection and those type of things, and he’s starting to handle himself better. I think he deserves some more opportunities to touch the football. And when he’s had the opportunity, he’s done some good stuff.”

Booker outgained Anderson on the ground 46-37 in Week Six despite running the ball five times while Anderson got 10 carries. Should his production continue at the same rate in larger doses, the balance may shift further in his direction as the season unfolds.
