Jim Irsay has “full confidence” in Pagano, Grigson

Colts owner Jim Irsay decided in January to keep coach Chuck Pagano and G.M. Ryan Grigson. Irsay isn’t ready yet to change his mind about that decision, 2-4 record notwithstanding.

Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Irsay said at the league meetings in Houston that he has “full confidence” in Pagano and Grigson.

It’s not a shock that Irsay would express “full confidence” in Pagano and Grigson. Any other position would represent an admission that Irsay erred when he could have walked away from Pagano with no buyout. Irsay is now committed to both men through 2019.

Still, Irsay has made his wishes clear; he wants multiple championships during the career of quarterback Andrew Luck. In his fifth season, the team still has a long way to go to compete with the best teams in the league.

Currently, the Colts are having a hard time competing with the rest of the teams in the division. Currently, the Colts are in fourth place in the AFC South.

Appropriate on the one year anniversary of the infamous “Fake Punt’ against the Pats last year.

    Yup, good call Pagano!

Irsay I guess you want a bad football team. you should sell the team to someone who want’s a winner

Uh oh. The owner’s vote of confidence. Looks like oh Chucky has a date with Black Monday at the end of the season.

  6. brianav036 says: Oct 18, 2016 9:29 PM

As a Dolphin fan I have literally no room to speak but to extend both Grigson and Pagano for multiple years is a mistake that even Miami is not stupid enough to make. Okay, I get it you want continuity. So why not extend them a year and make them perform? Grigson fell into the Luck pick and if you had a chance to re-do the draft is Luck still the consensus #1? He looks like a slighty above average QB.

  7. ikeclanton says: Oct 18, 2016 9:30 PM

Please Irsay, keep both of these guys right where they are for years and years to come.

  9. maumontav5 says: Oct 18, 2016 9:38 PM

Not an easy feat, but each one of these guys has managed to be the laughingstock at his position in the NFL. Think about it, worst owner, worst coach and far and away the worst GM.

The Colts GM and coach have a symbiotic relationship :

Grigson drafts poorly, making Pagano look bad. In turn, Pagano coaches poorly, which makes Griggy worse.

Of course, Irsay also had full confidence that he wouldn’t get caught with a car full of pills and $29,000 in cash on one of his regular stock up drives so it doesn’t mean much.

I have no confidence in jim irsay. Pagano isnt taking us to a super bowl, and grigson will never build a dynasty worthy of competing in the super bowl. 5 years in, and we dont have a defense.

Normally, I’d feel bad for Andrew Luck in all of this, but considering he’s the highest paid player in NFL history and essentially impervious to criticism by NFL media, I don’t. Not one bit.

Jim Irsay has been around for a long time and he’s not going to act impulsively just to satisfy the media’s desire to create news. Carolina was 15-1 last year and now they’re 1-5. Same coach. Same GM. Colts were in AFC Championship game 2 years ago. Same coach. Same GM. The Browns fire their coach and GM almost every year. They’re 0-6. Irsay is much smarter than most of us but we like to think we know what we’re talking about.

  37. patsrule59 says: Oct 18, 2016 11:10 PM

As a Patriots season ticket holder, I would love to see the Colts turn their season around.

Nothing I would enjoy more than seeing the soft-as-pudding Colts have to come to Foxboro in the playoffs and get pummeled…again.

  38. billybone says: Oct 18, 2016 11:23 PM

Not that the Cards are off to a hot start this season, but I bet Irsay wished he would have kept Bruce Arians instead of Chuck.

  39. edelmanfanclub says: Oct 18, 2016 11:51 PM

I like the comment about consistency for success. All Id like to say is Luck is the only reason this team has been successful in past years. Luck is the only reason this team was one the 4 remaining in 2014. Guess who is failing Luck? Grigson, Pagano, Irsay. The Browns are 0-6 and have a high turnover rate but replace luck with the average QB and they would likely be the Browns.

  40. magikskillz says: Oct 18, 2016 11:55 PM

It probably would have been smart to fire Pagano and Grigson and get Hue Jackson and Bob Quinn to replace them. I mean I just don’t get it. Keeping those two buffons makes no sense. Just like the Rams keeping Jeff Fisher all these years. I wish I could suck at my job and not get fired.

Worst organization in NFL! All started with Polian pumping crowd noise through the PA system, then on his way out the door Polian gives Griegson the gift of Andrew Luck, throwing a whole season for #1 pick.
Talk about affecting competitive balance…..listen to Polian on NFL radio and he just sounds like a bitter man. Should play a drinking game as to how many passive aggressive slams he puts on the Patriots or Bill Bellichick. Imagine one (ahem) Hall of Famer slamming a real HOF’er. Polian should have a green jacket, not a gold one. What did the colts fans do to deserve this foolish organization?

  50. bjwbrown2011 says: Oct 19, 2016 2:15 AM

At the end of last season there were three valid options:

    1. Let Pagano’s contract expire
    2. Fire Grigson and sign Pagano if the new GM wanted him
    3. Fire Grigson and let Pagano’s contract expire.

Yet the colts entered this season with both of them and if they weren’t part of the AFC South they would have to decide who to talk with their top 5 draft pick.

  51. roverboy1949 says: Oct 19, 2016 5:40 AM

Vote of confidence from a drug addict for 2 lying cheaters. Sounds about right for the colts.

  52. brownsfandrinkingmakersmark says: Oct 19, 2016 5:51 AM

Tom Coughlin seems like Irsay’s kind of guy. The “vote of confidence” makes me think that even more.

  53. bigoldred says: Oct 19, 2016 6:58 AM

Still, Irsay has made his wishes clear; he wants multiple championships during the career of quarterback Andrew Luck.
I’m sure he does, like every other owner wants for their team. Of course, that has no effect at all. Andrew Luck looks good, but his poor decision making is the cause for a fair amount of the sacks.

This steaming pile is almost as funny as the “swinging gate” play. But neither are as entertaining as Irsay’s expectations of “winning multiple championships with Andrew Luck”. The Colts stink. They are quite possibly the softest team in the entire league and that is not changing any time soon.

  58. grogansheroes says: Oct 19, 2016 7:54 AM

  59. blurocpurp says: Oct 19, 2016 8:03 AM

maybe its karma for the whole “deflated footballs, they cheated and that’s why we lost” bs that THEY STARTED! When we all know Brady would have tore apart that horrible defense throwing a watermelon!

  61. mlander12 says: Oct 19, 2016 8:46 AM

tonebones, the only reason the Colts were in the playoffs was because of the weak division, everyone knew that then. Since then the team is worse and the game time coaching decisions are still bad, but the division isn’t a complete gutter anymore. The panthers let a top CB get away and replaced him with a mess, that’s why they suck now.

  62. bullcharger says: Oct 19, 2016 8:51 AM

My conspiracy theory continues to be that Irsay basically had to extend them for helping him to orchestrate the sting on the Patriots. Not even trying to say the Patriots were innocent. Just that Grigson sending a letter and then claiming D’Qwell Jackson reported that the ball he picked off was soft (when afterward he said he didn’t notice anything wrong with it). It sure seemed like a sting.

  63. feckyerlife says: Oct 19, 2016 8:52 AM

the colts are the worst franchise in football. yes, even worse than the browns.
since 1983 they had/have 3 once-in-a-generation franchise qbs (1 didn’t want to play for them and the other 2 got/gets destroyed by weak O-lines) and have only 1 super bowl to show for it. even the freaking ravens have 2 and they didn’t exist before 1996. ok coach B, provided the basis for that, but let’s give all the props to ozzie^^
they should be one of the elite franchises in the nfl just by talent at qb, but they’re not..not even close.
instead, they rather go full kindergarten mode and throw dirt at someone they secretly admire. #PATSDYNASTY

They have maybe 5-10 guys that could be starters on a Super Bowl roster. They need better players and way better coaching.
