Chargers punter Drew Kaser named AFC special teams player of week

Chargers punter Drew Kaser has been in the news for the wrong reasons this year, so he deserves some recognition when he does well.

The rookie punter was named AFC special teams player of the week, after putting four of his five punts inside the 20 in San Diego’s upset win over the Broncos.

When the Chargers lost to the Raiders last week, he mishandled a potential game-tying field goal, and his holding duties were given to backup quarterback Kellen Clemens.

The sixth-round pick from Texas A&M was off to a slow start this year, and ranks 31st in the league in gross average (41.0 yards per punt) and 27th in net (37.6).

Hysterical when you consider the guy probably shouldn’t even be on an NFL roster.

That is 1 way to bounce back from a rough start to your career

Shouldn’t be on an NFL roster??? Your ignorance knows no boundaries.

He was an All-American and Ray Guy Award finalist in 2013 after leading the SEC with a 47.4-yard average (beating perennial Pro Bowler Shane Lechler’s school record), and had nice follow-up seasons in 2014 (44.5-yard average, 19-of-56 punts inside the 20). Kaser broke that school record again in 2015 (47.47) on his way to first team All-SEC honors, placing 21 of 60 punts inside the 20-yard line.

He’s played in 6 NFL games. He’ll be fine.

That was a sweet win for Bronco haters everywhere.

Kaser has had three 4th quarter “teen”yard punts this year, including a 17 yard punt against the Raiders. He should have a long career and the Chargers staff is sticking with him, which probably boosts his confidence vs. the Broncos.

Still doesn’t make up for a 18 yard punt and a mishandled FG snap.
