Report: Jets to name Geno Smith starter today

AP

This may not be why the Jets were hesitant to pay Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason, but it makes it convenient that they didn’t invest.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Jets have decided to change starting quarterbacks, benching Fitzpatrick in favor of deposed starter Geno Smith.

Fitzpatrick has struggled, but Jets coach Todd Bowles initially said he was sticking with him after Monday’s loss to the Cardinals. He walked back a bit of that support yesterday, opening the door to give Smith a second chance to be the starter.

The numbers alone justify the move, as Fitzpatrick has five touchdowns and 11 interceptions for the 1-5 Jets.

  1. It is painful but it is the right move.

The Jets are 1-5. They are old at OL, secondary and linebacker. RB is also not great–but they picked up some free agents that probably need to play next.

They are not going to the playoffs. I hope they don’t–they get a 1st rd loss and a mid-range draft pick that won’t help them.

They have 2 other QBs on the roster. Smith is a free agent at the end of the year. Fitzpatrick is an 11 year vet that won’t be back in 2017.

Fitzpatrick is not playing as well in 2016–his limitations–lack of arm strength on downfield throws–has caught up with him. And if you look at his career stats, he has often struggled with turnovers–if he plays enough.

The Jets need to evaluate what they have on the roster, especially QBs Smith, Petty and Hackenberg. That is more important for the rest of the season than letting the noodle armed gunslinger play a few more games.

It would also be nice to switch back to a 4-3 so Sheldon Richardson is not playing linebacker…but thats another issue.

  2. I would say its time. By now Geno is the answer or he is not, either way its time to find out so they can plan for drafting a QB next year.

  3. Jets can’t find a QB. Ben Rapelisberger out 6 weeks. Kapknelldick can’t play. Wentz gets exposed. Rodgers is retired even though he hasn’t announced it yet. Dallas doesn’t have a controversy. They have an early Christmas miracle.

  4. What about the stones on Fitzmagic – holds out for more dough over the summer and then goes and throws 5 TDs and 11 (!!) picks through 6 games.

    J-E-T-S J-E-T-S J-E-T-S

    lol

  5. This won’t fix anything, but it’s still the right move. Fitzpatrick isn’t the future. Smith probably isn’t, but the Jets might as well make sure. However, neither Fitzpatrick nor Smith has been responsible for the dwindling running game, absence of a pass rush, and poor pass coverage, among other issues.

Remember when everyone was outraged that the Jets wouldn’t give Fitzpatrick a long-term huge money contract over the offseason?

    —————————————-

Just like when they said Reese should have been fired for drafting OBJ when he sat his 1st month or the Browns were stupid for trading Trent Richardson to the Colts. There’s a reason fans aren’t GMs

  7. Ryan Fitzpatrick CAREER Statistics:

    159 td – 127 int – 64 fumbles – 214 sacks

    79 QB rating – 59% completions

    206 yards per game

    Geno Smith CAREER Statistics:

    27 td – 36 int – 17 fumbles – 75 sacks

    71 QB rating – 57% completions

    183 yards per game

By that logic I’m not sure why they aren’t using this time to look at the rookies. Still trying to make a veteran work sounds like they are still trying to pull out the season. Maybe another loss or two and they shift those gears.

  9. Well it certainly didn’t help not having any training camp or any preseason action. The Jets helped create their own situation. Not saying he deserved Andrew Luck money, but a reasonable 2 year contract would have got him signed and into camp.

  10. Wait….Bowles was calling Smith “A backup for a reason” yesterday, and then names him the starter today?

Bless the Jets, Colts and Dolphins! It sure is fun watching their off-season, smack-talking fans look foolish. Year after year after year.

Jets seriously dodged a bullet by not giving Fitzpatrick 18 mil a year.

Can’t blame Fitz for pressing though. He knew this was going to be it for him so he was grabbing as much money as he could to take into the sunset with him. He had his eye on the business. He’s as smart as some of those Harvard guys.

and they should do that as well, if Geno goes out a lays a couple of eggs over they next two weeks.

  13. Playing Geno Smith makes no sense, they’re much better off seeing what the rookies can do.

Geno is even worse than Thyroid Taylor. Neither can pass the ball but Thyroid is a better runner, until he gets injured.

  14. I would’ve paid FitzPatrick this off-season. Another reason why I am no general manager of no professional team.

  15. Why do people trash Jets fans? the ones in NYC are a joke I get that, but I’ve met some Jets fans outside of the metro area at a few games and they are great people and those are the ones that actually know about their team.

  16. This is comical, but Fitz went to Harvard so he has to be a great QB. hahahahahah. stupid jets. Oh I know start Geno’s pizza aka I owe you money but im not gonna give it to you so im going to get knocked out. lol.

    —————————————————————-

The probably don’t remember that because it never happened, no one was outraged that they didn’t give him a huge contract.

  18. If the Jets had given Fitz the contract and had him in the building and OTAs, I wonder how things would have turned out.

  19. I posted in this forum this past summer that the Jets should have cut Fitzpatrick loose.

    Everyone laughed.

Now ai hope you can see how worthless he is.

  20. Not sure why the Jets front office doesn’t read the comments on PFT articles…. *sarcasm*

If they had they would have seen me explaining that while Fitz is by all accounts a great guy, he is not a great QB and things would go poorly for them if they expected another performance like last year. He had an entire career of mediocrity at QB to prove it. I’m glad he had a baller season last year but everyone knew it wouldn’t last…

Thank you Fitz for screwing my Bills one last time though by shredding us in your one good game this season…

  21. Not a Jets fan but noticed a number of “can’t be worse” comments.

If you’ve seen Geno play, yes, it can be MUCH MUCH worse. Geno is a terrible QB; Fitz has had success in the league and had a pretty decent year last year.

The O-line stinks and he’s in a funk, but boy this is a big downgrade for the Jets.

    ————————

Likely the same. Fitzpatrick just isn’t very good over the long term.

There’s a reason he has jerseys from half a dozen+ teams hanging in his closet.

  23. Problems across the board, four QB’s on the roster, and this is what you do? The seat under Bowles should be getting pretty warm ……..

  24. FYI the rookies will get killed out there. They need to build a team around them. To start them would be suicide

Is Geno the answer to the Jet’s winning, doubt it. Why? Because it’s the entire team that sucks, not just the QBs

I just hope Geno can make it an interesting game.

  25. I laughed when this clown was holding out for more money, I laughed when people thought he was worth it, Denver fans wanted him, Jets fans wanted him back.

and everybody thumbed down me for telling you the truth, This guy is a scrub, allways has been, allways will be. He will look like a hall of famer one game and then right back to his same old self for the rest, and he will allways throw that pick when the game is on the line or really matters.

for somebody who is ” so smart ” he makes some of the dumbest decisions i have ever seen out of a QB.

  26. As a Bills fan I can say Fitz had his moments in the NFL. Not the best QB but certainly better than Geno. Getting Fitz signed before OTA’s and pre season might have helped. Why are the Jets wasting time on Geno? Try one of the other guys…..

  27. The Jets are the Jets. Does not matter who the coach is or who owns the team. It was no different when the Hess family owned it. It’s a clown show, always has been a clown show and always will be a clown show. It’s unreal how year after year, decade after decade, bring their fans to the top floor of the building where the sky is the limit the. Blow the building up

No other way to explain it. This guy Bowles needs to have his pulse checked to to make sure he is breathing.

Hey Joe, stick with the Argos. They’re more your speed.

    ================================

    Bowles wants the black quarterback.

  30. At least, as the first poster mentioned, we will stop hearing about where Fitzpatrick went to school.

It was mentioned all offseason that giving in to Fitzpatrick was foolish but the Jets were determined to be the smartest people in the room with predictable results.

Auditions for 2017 have officially begun, that includes the coach and GM.

  31. Seems like Bowels is going to the unemployment line, someone in the Jets hierarchy neutered him with this qb decisions. Funny how Bowels came out immediately afterwards about hos Fitz is the guy he is starting, next day well we have to evaluate it, next day we’re going with Geno. No stability and the Jets have shown once again they are a lousy franchise

    +++++++++++++

Pats fan here but I wouldn’t start shoveling in the dirt yet. Whether Smith gets named the starter or not that was a smart statement by Bowles. Smith was talking and Bowles put him in his place. Things are bad enough there, the last thing Bowles needs is the inmates thinking they can start running the asylum when the season is salvageable. It’s not all that surprising the Jets took a step back this season when you consider last year’s schedule vs this year. So far this season their opposition has a .645 winning % and they are looking at 4 very winnable games. If Geno goes in thinking he’s all that then gets those wins there’ll be no living with his inflated 50 cent head.

  33. Everyone speculating whether being in camp and at OTAs would have helped Fitz be better prepared — could they have worked out an injury guarantee that allowed him to participate without risking disaster, while they worked out the contract details?

So Taylor can’t throw the ball? He only throws one of the best deep balls in the game. You are about as smart as a box of hammers, and actually, that would be an insult to the box of hammers.

  35. Gotta play Geno. Hopefully he plays well enough to earn the spot full time, or garner interest from other teams so you guys can get some return on the investment.

  36. Won’t make a difference who the QB is. Team needs football players. Ryan ain’t havin’ the best year, admittedly, but who is he throwing to, and how well is he protected, and how strong is the counter-balancing running game? Very little of this mess is on Fitz.
