APThe Browns lost their seventh game of the year on Sunday and, barring a remarkable change of fortunes, they are on their way to a 14th straight season without a playoff berth.
Assuming that’s the case, that would run left tackle Joe Thomas’ own streak to 10 straight seasons. Unless, of course, there’s a trade that sends Thomas to a team with brighter immediate prospects than the Browns can offer.
Mike Florio reported Sunday that such a trade is a possibility a year after Thomas was reportedly close to landing with the Broncos at the trade deadline, but coach Hue Jackson insisted on Monday that no deal would happen.
“We are not going to trade Joe Thomas,” Jackson said at his press conference.
There’s no equivocation in that response or in the team’s tweet about his answer, although the old saying goes that everything has its price so there may be an offer that the Browns feel they can’t refuse given the wholesale teardown that’s been going on in Cleveland since the current regime took over.
Joe Thomas is an all time great who did his time in a losing organization. He should have been traded a long time ago. At 31 and going into his 10th season, it’s now or never. There is no shame if they do trade him. I wish he had gone to the Broncos last year.
It’s smart not to trade him. Even though the Browns are winless, Thomas is a stud and one of the best team guys in the NFL.
And you also aren’t winning a game this season. Clown show.
Translation : We dont care if he wants out of this dumpster fire, he is going to sit and stew in it like the rest of us until he retires.
Y the F- – – not? Does he think they’re goin on a playoff run? If they’re serious about rebuilding this franchise they’s trade him.
Look at all the current playoff caliber teams (from just this weekends games) that desperately need OT help & would part with multiple draft picks.
Nick Saban wasnt ever coaching at Alabama either……..
The Browns should do whatever Joe Thomas wants. If that means finishing his career in Cleveland at the expense of lost draft picks the Browns could potentially get in return, or if it means trading him to a contender so that he can finally have a shot at tasting the glory. It should all be up to Joe. He’s earned it with his elite play and even more impressive professionalism over the past 10+ years.
YET !
Why doesn’t he just say that the Browns have no idea what they are doing. Thomas is great, no doubt, but they are re-building (or just plain ol’ building), and they need youth, a quarterback with a clue, as well as Hue and the front office being clear about the long game in building a winning organization. Aging Pro Bowlers and RGIII ain’t gonna solve the deep problems in this season or the next two. Thomas and an early pick for Garoppolo, then building the O-line with their bank of picks makes more sense.
sorry, vikes, I’m sure Jake Long will be fine….
Honestly, though. What’s the point in trading him? Yay… you get three first rounders and four second rounders. Big deal. History has shown that each of those picks would be come a bust.
I give him all the credit in the world for not being a distraction.
A team is very fortunate to draft an excellent left tackle, and an excellent left tackle almost never drops outside of the Top 20. It is one of maybe two positions that you cannot simply replace with any guy. If you never hear the game commentators call out his number, it means he’s doing his job.
With that said, it’s not gonna matter for the Browns if they keep him.
Didn’t he say last month that he didn’t want to be traded? If Joe wanted to be traded they would trade him.
Not trading him makes no sense but that is exactly what the current Browns do.
Everything about this team now is based on excuses.
Don’t do this to this fine man. He has suffered in that cesspool for long enough.
It would be completely idiotic and self-defeating NOT to trade Thomas if they can get significant value for him. Let’s assume for a moment that the Browns are in fact working toward winning seasons and playoff appearances. It’s obvious that this period isn’t going to overlap much, if any at all, with what’s left of Thomas’ own prime years. What sense would it make not to make the best use of his value and align it with roster-building that works?
That’s what’s coming out of his mouth but in his heart says we’ll trade him.
They know that he can teach those rookies a thing or two this season. Because you know he’s going to get traded right before the draft.
The Browns will insist that he’s not going to be traded up to the very moment he’s actually traded.
Poor bugger, he’s going to have nightmares now that he’s going to be trapped in Cleveland his whole career and wake up covered with sweat realizing that it’s not a dream but reality.
G-Men please give up 2-3 for Thomas
we should have an elite O but Eli sucks unless he has more than 2 secs
Vikes couldn’t trade for him if they wanted — no cap room.
Almost made it through a day without seeing the never, ever used term “dumpster fire.” Oh well, maybe tomorrow…
that is one of the worst defenses I have ever seen yesterday. Hill took one 70 plus and was hardly touched..
but the analytics said these were all good defensive players….darn analytics…
sashi and crew 0-7…….great start !!!!!!!
kessler is more fragile than my daughters raggedy ann doll…..darn analytics….
Joe Thomas is a has been. a good player on a dumpster fire. good thing u resighned a few years ago , U showed everyone how badly u want to win…..NOT
I’m sure he’s not available for trade. Until Bill gets on the phone and offers you Jimmy G in return for Thomas and 2 first rounders.

Staley or Thomas would be pipe dreams for the Vikings. Not only do they not have the cap space, they don’t have the picks. Save your breath on trolling them on this one.
Think I said this same thing last year…I’d hate to see Joe leave, but he deserves to play for a winner.
I think Jackson is actually saying, “We’ve gotten a feel for the market, and no one will pay us what we want for Thomas, so he’s staying put.”
Oh, Hue. #HueNCry
enough of this already.
Welcome to Seattle, now lets go win another ring!
Send George Tammers to the Jags! Then he’ll be with a real contender
Come on Hue…
Give the poor guy a break and trade him to Denver. Let him get a Super Bowl ring.
These stories remind me of Archie Manning. Archie was stuck forever on a horrible Saints team. He was an elite QB who would have won multiple super bowls on a good team. He was Steve Young before Steve Young.
The Vikings have managed to assemble the most expensive collection of lifeless carcasses for an O-line in the history of the NFL. It’s a shame their GM backed them into to such a corner with their cap and draft pick situations.
I remember when Viking fans insisted that Spieldope didn’t mortgage their future with the Sam Bradford trade. Except that he most certainly did.
The Brown’s are on like what, their 5th or 6th starting QB? Yes, they are rebuilding and have the same plan as the Raiders did 3 or 4 years ago. They want to eventually be a “draft and develop” team, like the Packers. That is going to take quite a few years. They have enough extra draft picks lined up for the next few years. They are going to be very bad for the next two or three years, no matter what. Thomas is the one guy that they need to keep, to protect any QB that they now have left to finish this season. He will be traded just before next years draft, but not this year.
Haslam is on the block…and cheap. Used jocks, old socks, whatever the hell you want. I HATE BEING A BROWNS FAN!!!
This might me a bit off-topic but when exactly did Hue Jackson become NFL Yoda?
He was always a middling offensive coach, then went to the Raiders, where he backstabbed his way in to the head coach spot.
After which he took a previous 8-8 team, and after sending 42 picks to the Bengals for Palmer, went… 8-8.
The guy has never shown a thing that would equal head coach genius.
How is he suddenly a sage?
Stop trying to trade one of our few good players. How are our 300 draft picks from last year doing. Kessler has promise, so has Coleman. The rest of our newcomers are rejects, cast offs and very terrible rookies. I have been a Browns fan for 52 years and this is the worst roster ever. This is very sad for all of us season ticket holders. We are truly the 76ers of the NFL. Sad!!!! All the old Browns, Golic, Warfield, Collins, Sipe, Graham, Brown, Kelly,Matthews, Mack and other( dead or alive) find this current mess to hard to take.
