Report: Saints made a play for Joe Haden before deadline

Getty Images

The Browns made a trade on Monday when they acquired linebacker Jamie Collins from the Patriots, but they didn’t do anything else on Tuesday before the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

That means left tackle Joe Thomas will stay put along with cornerback Joe Haden, although there were reportedly talks about a deal involving Haden before the curtain dropped on this year’s trade window.

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that the Saints “made a play” for Haden before the deadline. Per Werder, they ultimately decided the price the Browns wanted them to pay was higher than they were willing to go.

New Orleans have been without Delvin Breaux for several weeks because of a broken leg and Sterling Moore missed last week’s game with an abdomen injury, leaving the Saints with undrafted free agent Ken Crawley and B.W. Webb in lead roles against the Seahawks in Week Eight. Haden would have upgraded that group, but the Saints will have to go with what’s already on hand and hope Breaux can return to action instead.

Overpaid for Byrd. Not that Haden would be a bust, but glad they were conservative and stuck to their price.

Trade deadline before the season is half over? Idiotic! Let it play out to the end of the regular season and then expand rosters by five or seven players since those in the playoffs are going to need extra players.

Makes sense for the Browns to hold on to their aging talent like Joe Thomas, they are in the midst of a superbowl dynasty. And who needs those 20-something pro bowl players like Haden, you can always draft young talent like that right?

  4. beerbudsnbevo says: Nov 1, 2016 5:16 PM

They are in salary cap hell, and on the brink of rebuilding…

Why put yourself in a bigger financial hole for a player that can’t stay on the field?

  5. johnnydom says: Nov 1, 2016 5:16 PM

Haden has played 10 games since 2015 he’s hurt often especially right after he gets burned which happens way to frequently for someone that calls himself a lockdown corner, that’s laughable.

    ^^^^
Kind of hard to be a free safety, which is the last line of defense, when you play in a secondary that has no corners. Haden might have helped improve Byrd’s stock.

  7. eljefedelmundo says: Nov 1, 2016 5:19 PM

I thought secondary help wasn’t the Major problem?

Now if Haden were a pass rusher…

  8. laukkanen5 says: Nov 1, 2016 5:20 PM

Joe “Fried Again” Haden belongs in Cleveland…

he has no heart, when things go south and they always do, Joe gets hurt….

hard to believe anyone can be 0-8 in this league with so many bad unwatchable teams

    lmao

they have no cap space and they are rebuilding

    how stupid

You know the Saints have gotten out of hell since they have Brees’ deal redone. They have a good bit of space in 2017 and a ton of space in 2018.

no way this ever happen. its all about the dead $$$,and the Browns weren’t going their.

  12. ilovefoolsball says: Nov 1, 2016 5:58 PM

It makes sense the Browns are asking for a lot for Haden. Without him they might be 0-10 instead of 0-8.

  13. ballboy48 says: Nov 1, 2016 5:59 PM

Laukkanen5, it’s not that hard when the Browns have 31 (of 53) with two years or less of NFL experience. Too be honest, the Browns have been in almost every game this season, despite having the youngest team in the NFL.

  14. dawgturd says: Nov 1, 2016 6:09 PM

Glad he’s staying in Cleveland. He is a true professional, and always supported the other professional sports teams in Cleveland.

He had a couple pro bowl years and unfortunately injuries have to their toll on him. He may not be a “pro bowl” corner any more, but he’s still a capable corner when he’s on the field……and we definitely need that.

    ballboy,
whose fault is that…Jim Donovan even said none of them look special…

the Steelers will have 35 mill cap space in 2017, but unlike the Browns they have actual NFL talent…refreshing

    Dude is seriously over rated

  17. jagsfan1 says: Nov 1, 2016 6:29 PM

I guess “Sashi” and his band of “we think we are the smartest guys in the room” baseball moneyball players could not get what the chart said Haden was worth.

  18. tylawspick6 says: Nov 1, 2016 7:34 PM

    ugh

cap space in 2017 and 2018 means nothing of you have had bad drafts.

you cannot buy a team in the nfl

    it does not work

the saints are at least 3 years away and need draft picks
    their defense is absolutely atrocious

  19. ballboy48 says: Nov 1, 2016 7:54 PM

Laukkanen, what are you talking about. Emmanuel Ogbah has played tremendously, Nassib is always in on plays, Coleman was playing well before he broke his hand, Kessler has played well in the 3.5 games he’s played (947 TD’s, 4 TD’s, 1 INT), and 9 of the 14 draft picks have started this season. Tell me where Jim Donovan said what you’re talking about.

Joe Haden 2016 is nothing like Joe Haden of years past. Like Revis.

The Saints have so many holes on D that rhis wouldn’t have even scratched the surface. They are probably lucky that a deal could not be reached.

  22. twoteamsforlosangeles says: Nov 2, 2016 12:35 AM

After the Browner and Finnegan disasters, do you really wan’t to take a chance on another injured and often burned cornerback?

  23. haslamdrinkshisownpee says: Nov 2, 2016 8:02 AM

Probably a little overrated and can’t stay on the field but I can’t help but love the guy. When guys maneuver their way out of Cleveland while hiding on toilets, he’s been nothing but a class act. Hopefully he can stay healthy and help some young guys become Successful and be here for some form of a turnaround.

    =====================
Hilarious! Saints have the Number 1 offense and a HOFer at QB. Saints have a defense that is getting healthier and is improving week to week. If they improve to middle of the road Saints are in the playoffs…

  25. dutar76 says: Nov 2, 2016 2:20 PM

As far as salary cap hell… nope, we’re out of that. As far as needing a DE more than a cornerback… well, considering we’ve lost our 1st through 5th string corners since the season began, and are one injury away from having only 2 healthy corners, I could see the need for depth, especially quality depth.

We’ve lost Lewis, Swann, Williams, Breaux, and Moore. When we get Breaux and Moore back, I’ll feel a lot more confident in our ability to cover.

The only DE on the trading block was Sheldon Richardson. And Payton doesn’t like to sign players with questionable charactor, and Richardson definitely brings dirty laundry with him.
