Report: Rolando McClain suspended for another full year

AP

Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain is reportedly facing another suspension for a full year beyond the suspension he’s currently serving, meaning he can’t play until late in the 2017 season and may never play again.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the suspension comes because McClain missed another drug test, and McClain is likely to appeal.

McClain has repeatedly run afoul of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. The 10-game suspension he’s currently serving was scheduled to end this week, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed last week that McClain would not return to the team.

Now it’s fair to wonder whether McClain will ever return to the NFL. If he serves a full year suspension, he’ll have gone almost two full years without playing football. Given that, and given his history of getting himself into off-field trouble, it seems unlikely that he’ll be in playing shape when and if he’s eligible to return, and it also seems unlikely that any NFL team will be willing to give him a chance.

The 27-year-old McClain has undeniable talent, but his career may be over.

I sure hope this isn’t over weed. It would be ridiculous if it is. That having been said, it appears Rolando is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

The things these guys throw away just for a craving of some kind of high or buzz is mind boggling.

He has undeniable talent when it comes to rolling up a fatty. Unfortunately that fatty is not allowed in your system under your former employer

  6. clssylssy says: Nov 20, 2016 8:30 AM

He missed a drug test. Maybe the guy had a reason.
Seems like the league is just after some players, like
Daryl Washington, who seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth after a “he said, she said” a few years back, although the Cards are still carrying him on their Cap?

    Pay Oakland back.

  8. cyraider says: Nov 20, 2016 8:35 AM

Sooooo glad Oakland dumped this dude when they did. He’ll be on Alabama’s scout team tomorrow.

Maybe McLain, Josh Gordon, Randy Gregory and Greg Hardy can form their own league of losers.

  11. eagleswin says: Nov 20, 2016 8:51 AM

It’s good the Cowboys are having a great year on the field because off the field they are a disaster.

Isn’t Randy Gregory facing a similar suspension?

  12. shadrach422 says: Nov 20, 2016 8:52 AM

    How bout dem Cowboys!!

  13. gorilladunk says: Nov 20, 2016 9:05 AM

As a Cowboys fan for decades, I don’t recall another player that had so much talent and was so indifferent about capitalizing on it. This guy, when he wanted, could be fantastic, but he is also about as motivated to be great on a regular basis as a park bench. He’s got a bad vibe about him and he needs to be kept away from this, or any other, team.

Are drugs really that more important than making millions of dollars?

  16. marmac2768 says: Nov 20, 2016 9:19 AM

It is truly amazing the way these guys throw away their careers for a “high”.

Do they not get any of their salaries when they are suspended? Or, do they get part of it?

How do they live during these long sentences?

Of course, they find enough money to get the dope, so they keep on going anyway.

  17. laffers says: Nov 20, 2016 9:25 AM

I’m certainly a believer in 2nd chances for those humble individuals who truly change their ways. However a it’s time for the league to finally say goodby to guys like McClain;they are just no good.
The commissioner always talks about “protecting the shield”, well…..it’s time to protect it from players that embarrass the league day in and day out; good riddence!

  18. fofrenchy says: Nov 20, 2016 9:27 AM

Cowboys really don’t seem to care much about character. It’s working out for them so far.

  19. wryly1 says: Nov 20, 2016 9:30 AM

I always had the impression MCLain played football because he was good enough to make money at it, but didn’t love it enough to care one way or the other.

  20. raiderinva says: Nov 20, 2016 9:32 AM

Is anyone honestly surprised by this?

    You forgot Johnny Manziel.

  24. realfootballfan says: Nov 20, 2016 9:51 AM

He’s already gotten paid. Seems to me the guy doesn’t care too much one way or the other, and frankly, that’s his prerogative that he doesn’t see bashing his brains in for 10 years as a high priority.

  25. ekurz76 says: Nov 20, 2016 9:52 AM

At least he knows his status what about Aldon Smith. His suspension is over and nobody has said anything.

  26. marmac2768 says: Nov 20, 2016 10:11 AM

He reminds me of a man who is from Mobile, Alabama, the town I live in now. He was a beast at Alabama and was picked by my favorite team, Tampa Bay. He played decently, but it seemed that his heart was never in it like it should have been. I don’t think he liked changing from LB to DE and it took some of his heart away. He only last a few years with the Bucs then a couple more years and then he was out of the league. Later on it was reported that he had been busted on a couple of occasions with drug paraphernalia. He looked like a lock to be one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, yet he didn’t do much.

Purple Drank, the official beverage of the Tide.

  28. oldhuskerfan says: Nov 20, 2016 10:15 AM

When someone has been pampered and catered to due to his talent for so long, he begins to believe he can get away with anything. Having said that, if you have ever known anyone with an addiction, you know it’s not as simple as “why would you throw away millions of dollars just to use drugs?” I don’t know if he’s just stupid or actually has an addiction.

  29. whatjusthapped says: Nov 20, 2016 10:16 AM

Yet, in Dallas, they called this locker room leadership.

  30. harrisonhits2 says: Nov 20, 2016 11:07 AM

“The commissioner always talks about “protecting the shield”, well…..it’s time to protect it from players that embarrass the league day in and day out; good riddence!”

Actually if its just weed the embarrassment is that the league doesn’t allow it and keeps petulantly suspending these guys. As long as they’re smoking at home and not while driving it should be a non issue.

  31. thegenghiskahn88 says: Nov 20, 2016 11:45 AM

For the people calling Dallas a disaster, they had no plans on bringing him back even after his suspension had ended. He didn’t even have an assigned locker.

They drafted his replacement and others have filled in quite well.

The only reason Gregory is around, is because he’s young and may actually have some addiction issues, unlike RoMac who’s just an idiot. However, Randy may end up in that category if he doesn’t get it together.

  32. brendafortheboyz says: Nov 20, 2016 12:00 PM

As far as I’m concerned, jettison Gregory, also!

  33. vicnocal says: Nov 20, 2016 12:09 PM

I don’t care what recreational drugs these guys take in their off time -is the NFL a law enforcement agency now, or is it still a football league?

  34. ron69 says: Nov 20, 2016 12:23 PM

When even Jerry Jones doesn’t want you, you know it’s time to hang the cleats, It’s fair to say Rolando’s career as a football player is over.

  35. THX 138 says: Nov 20, 2016 12:40 PM

Good, i hope he never plays again.

Are you familiar with the term COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT? The players signed off on the league drug program so stop whining as if the NFL is somehow trying to keep people down. If a guy can’t follow the rules that’s his own fault, not the NFL’s.

Another candidate for the dumbest post of the day!!

You don’t have a clue as to the influence that football players have on children. I don’t think that anyone should care about everything an NFL players does, but they need to recognize the way that kids see players as role models. Whether they like it of not, they are. Many of these kids want to be like their favorite player.

PLUS, playing professional football is for those that can take it PHYSICALLY. It is for the physically fit for the job. Illegal drugs are unhealthy and can cause them harm, not to mention their abilities to play the game. These guys sign a contract to take care of the investment that the team has in them.

  41. thegenghiskahn88 says: Nov 20, 2016 2:55 PM

Rolando was blessed with athletic talents that he refuses to make the most of, so your argument is invalid. He’s made more money than me, that’s about it.

He’ll probably end up having less money than I have soon. I doubt that he actually learned something in college.

Ricky could play. I’m not so sure this stiff could play well even if he could stay off the chronic.

  44. MannamedJay says: Nov 20, 2016 5:16 PM

I think its funny that people keep saying “if its just weed”. Thats not the point. The point is, even if it was “just weed”, he’s aware its banned and still insists on doing it. Thats the definition of stupidity. Regardless of what his or your personal feeling about it is, the fact remains, its banned. Follow the rules or…well… lose your job and your income.
Refer to “Jamarcus Russell” in your textbooks as a further example.

“I dont remember Ricky Williams getting this much hate”

Ricky was just NUTS! Had a couple of screws loose, probably by dope. And, he never played for “America’s Team” which makes a HUGE difference.

Those of you spewing hate from the safety of cyberspace might have a second of pity for the man, and I would wager that some if not many of you know someone like him – and finally, with Thanksgiving coming up soon you might take 60 seconds and say a short prayer for him, because he needs it.

    As do you
