The Bills have played without their projected No. 1 wide receiver all season thanks to Sammy Watkins’ foot injury and they lost the guy who had been filling that role to a knee injury during Sunday’s victory over the Bengals.

Robert Woods injured his knee early in the game when his leg bent awkwardly when he was hit on the late side by Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict while in the process of being tackled by a couple of other Bengals defenders. Woods didn’t return to the contest and was spotted leaving the stadium on crutches with tests of the severity of the injury to come.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Woods suffered a knee sprain on the play. That’s preferable to a ligament tear or some other injury that would require surgery, but it still seems likely that he’ll miss time as a result of the injury.

Watkins was eligible to return to practice and get designated for a return from injured reserve, but coach Rex Ryan said he wasn’t ready yet. Percy Harvin, Marquise Goodwin, Justin Hunter, Walter Powell and Brandon Tate round out the receiving corps in Buffalo.
