Dolphins coach says Ryan Tannehill’s ACL isn’t torn

AP

The Dolphins still may not get Ryan Tannehill back on the field this year, but the news on his MRI wasn’t as bad as they feared.

Per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Dolphins coach Adam Gase told reporters that Tannehill’s ACL was not torn, and just sprained. Because he used all caps and exclamation marks, you know it’s seriously unexpected.

Now, it’s still unlikely he plays this week against the Jets, and he may not again this season. But Gase said it doesn’t look like Tannehill will need surgery to repair the sprained ACL and MCL. Last night, their fear was that it was a complete tear, and they still don’t have anything resembling a timetable.

But at least in terms of Tannehill’s health and his ability to be ready for the offseason program next year, it’s a huge dose of good news for a team making a playoff push. At least in the short term, it will be on backup quarterback Matt Moore to keep that hope alive.

Good news for all NFL fans. All injury, for any player sucks.

  4. gonzolo4 says: Dec 12, 2016 12:53 PM

Tannehill has been an ironman with all the abuse he’s taken over the years. Say what you will, but he can take a hit.

Phil Rivers played A.F.C. title game with torn A.C.L.
Jack Youngblood played in the PRO BOWL on a broken leg.

Tannehill needs to tape two Advil to his knee and get his arse out there.

    Well that’s certainly good news

Matt Moore will be playing the role of Earl Morrell and Ryan Tannehill will attempt to do his best Bob Griese impersonation……. 😉

As a Dolphins fan this is the best outcome we could have expected. Let’s make the playoffs and have Ryan come back to take the reighns

Great news after fearing the worst. He is such a good guy and finally learning how to play the position under Gase! Merry Christmas Dolfans!

Glad to hear it. Calais Campbell does not take cheap shots on QB’s

  14. onebuffalove716 says: Dec 12, 2016 1:14 PM

He has played much better the last 5-7 weeks. Judging by dolphin fan comments early in the year, they wanted him gone….
Sometimes the worst thing that can happen as a player starts playing well is take time off. It will be interesting to see if he continues to progress or will he regress with the time off.

  15. hehateme2 says: Dec 12, 2016 1:16 PM

Say what you will- but one thing is for certain- Tannehill is one TOUGH SOB. Even his ligaments refuse to give up!

  16. mattbilleauthor says: Dec 12, 2016 1:17 PM

Matt Moore has played well in relief in the past. A run-first attack suits his game well.

  17. tylawspick6 says: Dec 12, 2016 1:18 PM

Hilarious. He ‘s done for the year and so is Miami.

  18. squinn21 says: Dec 12, 2016 1:20 PM

Huge for them. He shouldn’t play again this year but they can build on what they have in the off-season. For once, the Dolphins look like they have a clue on how to win. Get some LB’s to help Kiko out, Reshad Jones back and a TE and next season could be a good one for them if they keep playing like they have.

To what gain? To prove that he can further hurt himself and the organization?

  20. latenightroach says: Dec 12, 2016 1:28 PM

Great news to hear that he doesn’t need surgery. He is one of the most durable QB’s I’ve seen. I’m happy for him, his teammates, and his fans.

  21. bsizemore68 says: Dec 12, 2016 1:30 PM

Great news for Thill and the Dolphins and fans. Could there be an Angle over looking the Fins? I am sure glad that my pace maker is working ok, one second, 5 second, its crazy. Bill.

  22. pfatalbert says: Dec 12, 2016 1:30 PM

Ironic that Calais Campbell who is a Miami Hurricane did it to the Miami Dolphin. I don’t think it was intentional as he kind of slipped on the wet surface and got pushed a little bit by the O-lineman.

  23. backintheday99 says: Dec 12, 2016 1:31 PM

Good news for TB and they finally have a real head coach. About time.

Tannehill has obvious talent that just needed to be refined by people who know what they’re doing.

    PS

Miko Grimes must not have left the needle in her voodoo doll long enough…

  24. tkebean says: Dec 12, 2016 1:43 PM

Good news for Tannehill but now some reality for Dolphins fans…Miami isn’t a serious SuperBowl contender with or without Tannehill. I just don’t see Miami seriously beating the Patriots, Chiefs, Steelers or the Raiders in the playoffs – and that’s just the AFC teams that would destroy them. If you think they can you must be a Dolphins fan.

  25. bobthebillsfan says: Dec 12, 2016 1:45 PM

Glad its not a serious as first thought.

  26. fishyinalittledishy says: Dec 12, 2016 1:52 PM

Ryan Leaf played for Chargers without any a arms so I am sure Iron man Tanny can play with a wonky knee. This guy is so tough he could have played in the 70’s.

  27. coltzfan166 says: Dec 12, 2016 1:53 PM

A sprain is a partial tear. A partially torn ACL will still take months to heal

  28. shadywarrior says: Dec 12, 2016 1:53 PM

Glad to hear it. ACLs suck bad enough, to do it towards the end of the season is even worse, tough to start the next one on time. Looking forward to the showdown vs these guys on New Year’s Day.

  29. billswillnevermove says: Dec 12, 2016 2:04 PM

Good news for you Dolphin fans, the guy finally has had a good year. Best of luck going forward.

  30. nhpats says: Dec 12, 2016 2:05 PM

No worries…..three more games and the only thing Tannehill has to worry about is his tee time…

  31. maust1013 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:11 PM

It’s always good news to any real fan that a player isn’t seriously injured. Good competition is what it’s all about.

Mighty big minded of you to be thankful that the QB you previously referred to as Turnoverhill and applauded Miko Grimes for ripping isn’t as seriously injured as was initially feared.

Yes, the time of year where the 4-time SB Champion NE Patriots are gearing up for their annual SB run…..and the time of year where the Dolphins are planning what they will do during the offseason…..

  35. sod61 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:22 PM

The viciousness of some of the comments on this article is a pretty sad commentary on the mindset of some people. I have not been sold on Tannehill as a top tier QB but I would never wish an injury or laugh and make a joke of any player injury. These injuries not only affect a team’s season, but they also affect the individual for life in a lot of cases.

  36. eaglesnoles05 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:28 PM

Meanwhile, don’t sleep on Matt Moore’s ability to distribute the ball to Landry an Co.

Best news I’ve heard all day, what a trooper Ryan is and was having a great year, proving he can compete and throw bombs, baby. Go Dolphins! Playoffs? Yes, playoffs, and why not?! Beat the Jets and the Bills and,……….maybe!?

  41. basedrum777 says: Dec 12, 2016 3:24 PM

Umm… Big Ben misses games every year. He’s only had 3 years where he didn’t miss at least a game. In 13 years.

  42. finsphan says: Dec 12, 2016 3:26 PM

You know, I was fully expecting to look at a bunch of comment boards and just see nothing but negative, condescending comments about Tannehill and his injury. To my surprise, most of the Dolphins fans and even fans of other teams have been pretty positive about it, wishing him the best. The worst comments I’ve seen have come from Dolphins beat writers almost praising the fact that he got hurt, even some going so far as to insinuate the “I told you so” narrative for their own self gain.

I’ll say it again, the Dolphins have the worst beat writers I have ever seen from any team in any sport.

That’s not true. My MCL sprain took about 2-3 weeks to heal. Was back running on asphalt sidewalks after that time frame. I toughed it out, and no one pays me millions to play football.

Expect Tanny back by no later than wildcard week.

ACL is not an MCL and each injury is different…plus Miami has to actually make the playoffs first. But the two most recent examples and QBs w/ ACL sprain trying to rush back for a postseason push are Dennis Dixon and RG3.

    Neither ended well…
