Rams fire Jeff Fisher

Getty Images

The teflon coach is finally fired.

Jeff Fisher, whose job security became baffling as he led the Rams through years of mediocrity, was fired today as the team’s head coach. The team announced the move this afternoon.

Fisher was fired after perhaps the single ugliest loss of his coaching tenure, a brutal blowout at the hands of the Falcons on Sunday that ensured he would have his fifth consecutive losing record at the helm of the team.

Now the question is who Rams owner Stan Kroenke will find to lead his team in Los Angeles going forward. Kroenke is more focused on building a stadium than on building a football team, but if he can’t find someone who can help his team win, he’s not going to fill his stadium.

Fisher clearly wasn’t the answer, and now he’s out.

Maybe one day you’ll fill us in on why you have such a vendetta against this guy. Mediocre coach at best for sure but the vitriol you’ve had towards him over the years is borderline mental illness.

Are you cracking open a bottle of champagne right now?

Captain mediocre could not have been canned any faster. Watch Shanahan (Mike) be in there next.

He is not getting a HC job in the NFL until 2019 at the earliest and that is probably optimistic.

  23. osiris33 (bandwagon since 1976) says: Dec 12, 2016 2:47 PM

Please get him out of the NFL forever. The idiot wants to ban kickoffs. Fisher is the poster boy for everything that’s wrong with the 2016 NFL.

    Good riddance.

  24. dumbpollack says: Dec 12, 2016 2:47 PM

    Harbaugh to the rescue

  25. edelmanfanclub says: Dec 12, 2016 2:47 PM

Wow! I did not expect this but good for Kronke. I really thought he was going to keep him into next season, that embarassing loss was the last straw, I suppose. Maybe Fisher was right that Goff isnt ready but that defense (his and Williams’ “forte”) is hot and cold this season. Time for a fresh start, I think an offensive minded coach that could help Goff and Gurley would be good, a new DC who doesnt target players would help the talented D as well. I wonder who the interim is?

  26. jag1959 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:47 PM

He doesn’t even get to break the record for career losses? All good, somehow it’s more fitting that he has to settle for a tie.

  27. brenenostler says: Dec 12, 2016 2:47 PM

Technically Fisher won’t solely own the record for most losses now. Assuming he doesn’t get another HC job in the NFL

  28. whocares69 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:47 PM

Rams need to hire Marvin Lewis. Please take him

  29. edelmanfanclub says: Dec 12, 2016 2:48 PM

If you saw him on the sidelines yesterday, he looked like a guy just waiting to be put out of his misery.

  32. bradygirl12 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:48 PM

  37. harrisonhits2 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:49 PM

Gee its not like they might have fired him a couple weeks ago instead of, you know, giving him a new contract they now have to buy out.

St Louis made the right decision not giving Kroenke a single dime for a new stadium

  38. skinsprinting says: Dec 12, 2016 2:49 PM

  47. eagler927 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:50 PM

  48. knowspinzone says: Dec 12, 2016 2:50 PM

Tough luck for Jeff Fisher. Just when he was about to break the record for most losses by a coach, the Rams fire his butt. Maybe he can continue his pursuit for the record with the Jets next year. 😀

That will make for an interesting short week leading up to their Thursday night tilt against the Seahawks, won’t it? Not that Fisher didn’t need to go but why not give him that game yet and then let your interim take over with the benefit of a few extra days of prep?

  52. bleedingfacemask says: Dec 12, 2016 2:51 PM

It’s a sad day for 30 NFL teams today. The only team happy about this is Seattle because for whatever reason, the Rams have had the Seahawks number for years.

I wonder if he asked to get fired so that he wouldn’t break the all time loss record.

  60. schmitty2 says: Dec 12, 2016 2:56 PM

This is long over due. I’m sure some dopey owner is already salivating to hire Fisher as his head coach (think Woody Johnson) but for the life of me I don’t know why.
Fisher has done nothing in his career for the vast majority of it.
I’m pretty sure Eric Dickerson is happy today, too.

  83. Ro says: Dec 12, 2016 3:12 PM

  84. wolfgangvomframps says: Dec 12, 2016 3:13 PM

As an Arsenal fan, I strongly advise Stan to go cheap with his next hire and put the saved money towards the world class striker that the Gunners need. Of course, with Santi injured, we could also use an attacking midfielder. Either (or both) will do.

  85. jm91rs says: Dec 12, 2016 3:15 PM

  87. guyjuneguyjune says: Dec 12, 2016 3:18 PM

Guess what? Now the FAA is not approving crains to build the Englewood stadium. The building approval process in LA is convoluted, complex and costly. 2019? Don’t count on it. You’ll be playing in “the hood” longer than that. Kroenke should be dramatically increasing his SECURITY HIRING before he looks for a new coach and drafting new players for next year. What a mess! =======

The contract extension was signed months ago, before the season even started. I thought everyone knew this.

In my opinion, the fact that the signing was leaked now, obviously by Fisher, is one of the reasons Kroenke pulled the trigger. Obviously, Shady Jeff thought that leaking it now and making it appear the extension had just been signed would make it too embarrassing for the team to fire him, and that was the straw that broke the Ram’s back, so to speak.

Good riddance to the most over rated coach of our generation.

  94. docr8der says: Dec 12, 2016 3:40 PM

He’ll be on the retread round-about with all the other used to be coaches who suck and are vanilla and stale. Sadly, he’ll end up a DC and some promising younger guy will be placed on the back burner as they weed thru the refuse of Pagano, the Ryans, Turner, Kelly (who will not survive SF)..and others, too many others who will leech onto teams by fumes of their past careers only.

  95. thehighhat says: Dec 12, 2016 3:44 PM

They are run by an owner that assembling a team that can play winning football is last on his list.

Colts fans better be careful what they wish for. Pagano is a good coach. Jimmy Irsay is just as bad of an owner as daddy Bobby. Bills will wait until the end of the year. Rex is still riding on Ray Lewis and Ed Reed’s coattails. How do you give up 300 yards of offense to a RB? Any RB and at home?
