Tom Brady adding to long list of postseason records

AP

When the Patriots face the Texans tonight, Tom Brady will break a record of his own just by stepping on the field, and then he’ll break more of his own records as the game goes on.

Brady will be playing in the 32nd postseason game of his career, which is the most in NFL history. He’s the first player ever to play the equivalent of two full seasons in the postseason. Here are all the career postseason records Brady owns:

Games played: Brady set the record of 31 last year, surpassing his old teammate Adam Vinatieri, who has played in 30 career postseason games. Tonight will be Brady’s 32nd career postseason game. Brady’s Patriots are 22-9 in the games he’s started; no other quarterback has been on the winning team more than 16 times.

Pass attempts: Brady has thrown 1,183 passes in the postseason, 156 more than second-place Peyton Manning. Brady will keep adding to that record tonight, and it’s a record no one will approach for many years, if ever: Ben Roethlisberger, with 540 career postseason passes, is second among active players, and he’s not even halfway to Brady’s total.

Pass completions: Brady owns the record with 738 postseason completions, 89 more than Peyton Manning. Again, no active player is close: Roethlisberger is second among active players with 334.

Yards gained: Brady has 7,957, which is 618 more than Peyton Manning. Roethlisberger is the active leader with 4,249.

300-yard games: Brady has 10 games of at least 300 yards passing, one more than Peyton Manning. Brady has thrown for at least 300 yards in each of his last three postseason games, and if he does it again tonight he’ll have four in a row, which would tie Dan Fouts for the most consecutive 300-yard postseason games.

Touchdown passes: Brady has 56 career postseason touchdown passes, 11 more than second-place Joe Montana. Aaron Rodgers is second among active players with 31.

Brady also owns the single-game postseason completion percentage at 92.9 percent, going 26-for-28 in a 2007 game against the Jaguars. And he co-owns the single-game postseason touchdown record, with six touchdowns in a win over the Broncos in 2011.

However, Brady also has to worry about setting one record he’d prefer not to set: Brady has thrown 28 career postseason interceptions, just two fewer than the all-time record holder, Brett Favre. When you play in as many postseason games as Brady has, you’re bound to throw a few picks. If he throws a few more, he’ll have one dubious record to go with all his extraordinary records.

  1. Everyone knows Brady is pretty good with cheating. But the sad thing is no one will never know how average or bad he really is without cheating.

  2. I’m not even a Pats fan, but any hater that can’t admit they’d be wearing Brady’s jersey if he had these records with their team are blatant frauds. He’s the steely eyed truth.

  3. It’s nice that you threw in that bit about interceptions at the end, almost makes him seem human and gives the whiners something to work with. He is the greatest player of the salary cap era, too bad the trolls can’t just enjoy watching him work.

  4. You forgot to mention breaking his own record for playing with the most underinflated balls in the history of the NFL . . . because, you know, it’s cold, and science, and all.

  5. .
The most important stat: career playoff wins

    Brady – 22
    Montana – 16
    Bradshaw – 14
    Elway – 14
    Manning – 14
    Favre – 13
    .

  6. What a surprise…the only QB in history to play until he’s 40 for the best coach and owner of his generation also has most of the records.

    Just chokes you doesn’t it?
We wouldn’t have it any other way. Your visceral insecurity at the mention of Brady or the Patriots is a source of great amusement to most Pats fans but at I feel sad for you for half a second before I laugh. Now fire up those 83 other id’s for us.

  8. But, but, but Brady can’t throw worth a damn, so those records make no sense to the crybaby-faithful. But it’s an insult to mention 2nd-place PEDton Statmanning because his records are tainted by drugs and piped-noise. And you can’t count Aaron Rodgers’ 2nd-place 31 TDs because he had a long-running improper ball-inflation scheme for many years – and Rodgers’ average passer rating dropped over ten points if you compare the 5yrs before deflategate with the 2yrs since.

  9. Best to ever play the game.
It’s a shame that despite all the evidence showing that cold weather lowers the PSI in footballs there are still people so dumb that they will never be able to understand 7th grade science.

Which explains why those same ignorant fools still try to discredit Brady with the nonsense claiming that he was generally aware of someone letting air out of footballs.

Did the NFL ever release the PSI information from the 2015 season? How about from the 2016 regular season? How about from last weekends wild card playoff round? There were a few cold weather games last week. There will be more this weekend. But the NFL is keeping that information from the fans for a reason.

  10. Did increasing the size of the league, the number of teams in the playoffs, and the number of playoff games have anything to do with this?

Not saying anything about anyone’s talents, but this is a stroke-fest.

And Montana is still better and never threw and INT in the Big Game or loss a superbowl and didn’t cheat his way to the superbowl vs Rams!
    —————–
Except Brady never cheated against the Rams – the walkthrough was never taped it was fake news. And Montana cheated with silicon spray, headsets and sticky Rice. And Montana most years wasn’t good enough to advance deep into the playoffs like Brady. And Montana played before the Parity rules of caps and free agency which meant SB teams could stay together for multiple runs much more easily than today. Montana was one of the all time greats, but to claim he was better or cleaner than Brady is nuts.

  13. Yet Montana – in a tougher era for passing – has a higher playoff passer rating. Quality over quantity.

  14. And that is without mentioning the shackling of the defense that the rules changes have brought to the modern “WWE” version of football.

  15. Since he was exposed in deflate gate, Brady’s worst performances have come in games where the temperature was below 45° . It will be 29° in Foxboro for this game. Don’t expect much from Brady. The patriots are going to win this game it will have to be on defense .

  16. I love hearing all the whining comments from the haters after every patriots article. You all sound like 8 year olds who lost a game of kickball at recess. If you can’t beat them, call them cheaters.

  17. That’s two pretty good seasons vs the best teams in football. Not a fan of the team but makes me laugh when people criticise him. The guy is ine of the best to ever play and I wish he’d been QBing my team.

LMAO, Brady and the Pats won 3 SB’s in 4 years before the rule changes. Polian and Manning drove that change because they couldn’t compete with New England. Brady owned the game before it got Polianed.

  19. I just don’t get it, all these records, all those rings, and all the broken dreams of so many disgruntled trolls… and it’s still not enough….

Why Tom Brady why??? Why must you sneak into my driveway and deflate minute amounts of air from my tires every cold morning… Why???? (sobs softly)…

The man is a menace. A monster. An absolute MONSTER.

Winter has come kidz. Now is the season of all trolls discontent.

Oh look an early front runner for stupidest post of 2017… Congrats champ…

  21. Durning the first and second half the Patriots balls will be under the NFL-mandated 12.5 – 13.5 PSI range. As a matter of fact, they will be below the range they were at two years ago against the Colts, because the temp tonight will be 18 degrees lower than in 2015

What the crybabies, babygaga19, jchipwood and FlorioHasAHeadLikeACube will never understand and certainly not admit that it’s cold air that will cause the balls for BOTH teams to be deflated tonight. 2/200 of a pound is impossible to even measure with a basic air pressure gauge and that was the “average” number of the 11×2 balls that were measured theirs two gauges that varied 3/10 of a pound.

It’s more probable than not the Patriots win tonight, next week and the Super Bowl.

  22. I like Brady but Montana’s the GOAT. He only played 9 years on a contender yet matched Brady’s 4 Superbowls…without the help of the tuck rule or worst play call of all time. Montana played against tougher competition including the 80s Bears, Redskins and Belichik Giants. Montana rarely was intercepted in the playoffs unlike Brady who was picked off in most of his Super Bowls and lost 3 AFC championship games due to late interceptions.

  23. Greatest Super Bowl QBs: Montana, Aikman, Bradshaw. Cheaters don’t deserve recognition…he could’ve been the greatest.

  24. Getting ready for the party tonight at Gillette !

Looking forward to seeing the G.O.A.T. continue to break every post season record.

  25. Brady has the record for most post season games played but yet has only been to 3 wild card games because the Patriots are so dominant and normally get a bye.

  26. Someone explain how not making the playoffs for a QB means you’re better than someone who lost in the AFCCG, or lost the SB? Makes no sense. I mean neither get a SB trophy, sure, but that’s about the only common thing.

I’m too lazy to look it up, but I wonder how many seasons Brady has had his team in the #1 or #2 seed where he doesn’t even have a game in the divisional round, playing against lesser competition, likely boosting his stats, etc… good for thought

I like Brady but Montana’s the GOAT. He only played 9 years on a contender…
    ===================

Maybe he should have played better so his team could ‘contend.’ Any team with the supposed GOAT on it is by definition a contender. Arbitrarily deciding on 9 years when he went to the playoffs in 11 is ridiculous, if Joe Cool was as cool as we all remember in hindsight why did he have multiple losing seasons? Or four one & done’s in 11 playoff trips to Brady’s 2 in 13? 11 playoff trips and Montana only made it to the SB 4 times. I love Joe but Brady is the GOAT

  33. Peyton Manning: fully investigated by the NFL; numerous PED drug tests; never a violation or SUSPENSION; he and his wife trying to conceive after years of trying; she has twins 10 months later after ordering HGH. End of story! Sorry haters!!

  34. Visit any state or federal prison in the US and question the inmates about the crimes they were found guilty of, and to a man you will hear how the courts disallowed the scientific evidence (such as winter is cold) that would have proved their innocence. So Brady is not alone in his fury over the “unfair” verdict he received for breaking the rules (that he never broke, according to himself and his 53 fans who are on work-release).

  35. wait until bb and brady retire, write their memoirs, and
    expose roger goodell.

the millennials and adult morons will be mortified

goodell may be going to jail

  36. I knew from the start of this story that the mental midgets claiming cheating would fill this section.
The Patriots rank #15, tied with the Seahawks in cheating in the NFL.

  37. Brady’s records are amazing but it’s so sad his fan base is such a flock of insecure sheep worried about what other people think about their team…..I guess saying goat over and over is better than baaa…baaa.

  38. Montana had a better regular season, playoff and Super Bowl QB rating than Brady so he “played great”. Fact is by any objective standard 81-90 were the only years Montana was on a top team. Brady’s been on a top team for 16 years. Again, Montana had to face Belichik in the first round. Name me one team Brady’s played that’s as good as the 80s Bears, Redskins or Belichik Giants.

Step aside Joe, you’re great and all but the top of the mountain belongs to Tom Brady.

    Otherwise known as GOAT.

    🙂

  40. Yet if you ask Brady about any of these he’ll shrug and go right back to three hours of flex training so some 22 year old doesn’t steal his job.

  41. Brady has 9 post season losses, the most of any current starting QB. But the Patriots win and lose as a team so those 9 playoff loses are not technically Brady’s.

  42. Most of Brady’s records are Gretzky-esque. When 2nd place is another entire career away from catching him. GOAT.

  43. “i call him strom brady cause hes got a baby outta wedlock”

Lol its beyond hilarious someone finds that a reason to hate Brady. There are millions of kids born from unmarried parents in this country.

Not to mention the kid probably gets about 25k a month in child support or something outrageous like that.

I think you need to slow roll there fanboy. You are one of those who feel started on the day Brady put on a Pat’s uni…but alas you are wrong. While Brady should be considered the best of his era calling him the Goat is just plain new to football homerism. The rules have changed the game and the elimination of rules favoring the defensive backs has allowed the dink and dunkers to stand out. Brady and his TuTu would have crushed in the old days and we all know how much Tammy cries for flags on hits that timid during the old days. But hey little kids always hate the “old days” but won’t when they get there.

I know, right? But what is even sadder is your infatuation with the “sheep” and how much it obviously bothers you that they have “scoreboard” and all you can do is drool all over yourself while crying about it. So, carry on another couple of years if you must while the “sheep” continue to laugh at you.

  49. Brady is there but I still would take Montana. His superbowl record is flawless and his lack of mistakes in clutch time is unparalleled.

He also played in an era where Manning, Rodgers, and Brady may not have played 10 years due to the physical toll qbs endured.

But I also think this discussion needs to also include Bart Starr. 5 championships in 7 years is also unparalleled . To finish on top so often in such a short span shows incredible poise, leadership, and ability.

No qb is in this discussion without the team around him but in 20 years when we look back I dont believe Brady will be viewed as the goat compared to these guys.

He played with great teams like these other guys but his longevity, like Favre, is where a lot of his numbers come from. He wouldnt be playing any more in the eras that these other guys endured.

  50. When did it become cool to be a butt-hurt loser who can’t appreciate the greatness of others?

Some of the comments here make we sad for the state of what passes for men today.

  51. Brady is not a freaky gifted athlete that’s why he was overlooked 198 times. Just imagine all the hard work he puts in to improve his game year after year, and he is not done yet. It is staggering what he accomplished with what he had to start with. He is disciplined and dedicated to the sport ,his teammates, and team. Look at the receivers he had and have. Aside from Gronk none of them are freaky athletes either. They are average just like him yet they are winners.
As for the haters. You fools don’t know how rare Brady is. You waste years hating instead of enjoying excellence.
Brady do not cheat. Goodell cheats his team because of your teams and his deep malice for BB and the Patriots.
Cheat sheet…Patriots number 15. Broncos number one. Since you don’t get tired of saying the Patriots are the biggest cheater, there you go.

Brady is THE GOAT now. We will be dead and buried before anybody can break his post season record. Think about that…

  52. Can’t wait to see who the Patsies chump it to this year…and, let’s face it, they get fat every year on the league’s easiest schedule…take this year for example, NINE games vs NY Jets (2), Buffalo (2), Cleve, Cincy, LA Rams, SF and Jax…
P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C, and it’s that way every year!
Also, John Elway engineered The Drive, in sub zero weather, on the road in Cleve as an underdog….where is Tom Brady’s clutch road moment? I does not exist. The Pats win when they have home field and everything is going their way. Brady would have been made into sausage in the 1980’s and 90’s, period.

  53. Nofoolnodrool,

Tom Brady is a great QB, but Montana’s 4-0 SB record beats Brady’s SB mark. Reaching the SB and losing doesn’t add a ton to the career. Brady is just one SB loss short of Fran Tarkenton.

In the context of GOAT, three more factors push Montana ahead of Brady. First, Montana never lost the biggest game of his career, and Brady choked in the 2008 SB when the Pats had a chance to make history.

Second, Brady joined a stronger team than Joe did when entering the NFL. The Niners were like an expansion team when Montana entered the fold. And lastly, the numbers are deceiving because Montana didn’t play in today”s pass-happy NFL. Put the great QBs of the past in the modern NFL, and they would devour defenses.

  54. Also, John Elway engineered The Drive, in sub zero weather, on the road in Cleve as an underdog….where is Tom Brady’s clutch road moment? I does not exist.
    ———–
Does beating CLE anywhere before getting smoked in the SB really count?
Anyway … I seem to remember 2 AFC Championship victories for NE in PIT.

  56. All of those statistics are due to being on teams good enough to reach the playoffs. Brady

has been fortunate enough to be on great teams nearly his entire career.

When it comes to performing in the playoffs, he’s not top dog. Players like Drew Brees and

Aaron Rodgers smash Brady’s playoff stats. Sure, Brees and Rodgers haven’t been on teams as

good as Brady’s teams, but they’ve performed better in the playoffs than Brady has.

    For example, in the playoffs:

    Completion %: Rodgers = 63.7%, Brady = 62.4%
TD to INT ratio: Rodgers = 3.87, Brady = 2
    Points per game: Rodgers = 28.7, Brady = 26.0
    Yards per attempt: Rodgers = 7.5, Brady = 6.7
    Touchdown %: Rodgers = 6.1%, Brady = 4.7%
    Interception %: Rodgers = 1.6%, Brady = 2.4%
    Rushing YPG: Rodgers = 14.1, Brady = 3.8
    Rushing YPC: Rodgers = 5.3, Brady = 1.5
    Quarterback Rating: Rodgers = 100.3, Brady = 88.0

  57. There are rule changes that don’t help Brady as well. Never mind this back in the day, when men were men stuff. Before the salary cap era, you could keep all your players. You didn’t have to rely on UFAs like TBrown, DPatten, WWelker or college QBs like Edelman. Brady made these guys great, And it changed every few yrs. Montana was on an all star team on both sides of the ball every year.

And the keyboard warriors that call Brady ‘tammy’ are simply straight up cowards.

As to the pre SBowl era, you only had to win 1 playoff game
to be champion. Not the same.

Joe Montana was a “dink and dunker”, and he stood out.

  59. Florida76 , Montana played with 3 HOFers for an extended period of time and didn’t have to deal with modern free agency or the cap.

Brady is dealing constant roster turnover with the cap and FA (and a coach who isn’t afraid to trade away good players) and a league with more teams making it harder to retain talent. Sure passing stats are inflated today, but that doesn’t mean its easier to win, its actually harder.

And that “stronger team” Brady joined was only 5-13 from the time he joined the team till he was the starter.

And how does making it to more Super Bowls hurt Brady? Montana shouldn’t get more credit for being less successful in the earlier rounds of the playoffs.

  60. As for Aaron Rodgers, is the same old excuses as PManning. If his team is good enough to win 12-15 gms/yr, he outta be better than 9-6 in the playoffs. Any other stats are for losers. Even Flacco is 10-5 in the playoffs. They both had 1 year where they went 4-0 in the playoffs and got a ring. The rest of their postseason careers have been pedestrian. Brady is in a different universe.

  61. Black59razorblog

    3) A win against one of the weakest opponents in SB history, where the Pats were 7 pt favorites but had to hang on with everything they had to win.
    4) Should be 0-3 in last three SB’s if Pete Carroll doesn’t choke on the playcall and they hand it to Marshawn.

Brady also lost a SB as one of the biggest favorites in SB history to the NY Giants and Eli Manning where he managed to lead his team to a whopping total of 14 pts.

We all know Pats fans are nothing if not outstanding revisionist historians.

That’s a credit to the Patriots management for continuingly restocking the team with great players, not Brady. They lost Moss, then they got Gronk…etc

  65. Super Bowls Choked Away:

    For example, in the playoffs:

    Completion %: Rodgers = 63.7%, Brady = 62.4%
TD to INT ratio: Rodgers = 3.87, Brady = 2
    Points per game: Rodgers = 28.7, Brady = 26.0
    Yards per attempt: Rodgers = 7.5, Brady = 6.7
    Touchdown %: Rodgers = 6.1%, Brady = 4.7%
    Interception %: Rodgers = 1.6%, Brady = 2.4%
    Rushing YPG: Rodgers = 14.1, Brady = 3.8
    Rushing YPC: Rodgers = 5.3, Brady = 1.5
    Quarterback Rating: Rodgers = 100.3, Brady = 88.0

Well then, good thing wins don’t matter.

    But if you like stats,
    Rodgers SB win % .500
Trent Dilfer SB win % 1.000

When did it become cool to be a butt-hurt loser who can’t appreciate the greatness of others?

And Montana is still better and never threw and INT in the Big Game or loss a superbowl and didn’t cheat his way to the superbowl vs.. Rams!

How’d he do in his 5th & 6th Super Bowls?

Don’t be silly. Tolerant people would be open to the idea of people having different opinions. Seems like it would be an injustice for anyone to demand that others think like they do. Only intolerant people would even consider boycotting based on how someone may have voted.

Only in the confines of college campuses would people work to limit the free discussion of ideas that they don’t agree with. That kind of intolerance would never be championed in the real world by people claiming to be promoting social justice.

  75. Brady is the GOAT? Whoa! The Cheetah? Really? Oh my, that is rich!

How many Tammy rings were the direct result of undetected cheating? Heck, the Seahawks even gifted him one.

The real GOAT is Joe Montana. Newsflash, like your Pretty Boy Tommy, Joe also won 4 rings and he played in an era when qbs didn’t wear skirts. He also had class, didn’t CHEAT, wasn’t suspended for CHEATING, didn’t whine incessantly and throw tantrums to the Refs, wasn’t controlled by his celebrity wife, fought his own battles, and was a Man. Virtues that Prince Tom will never have. Keep drinking the Koolaide dudes. I know, because Tom is your super hero and you worship him, that makes you super, right? Greatness by cyber association, yes? Sad. One day may you all find your true self and a little self-esteem to go with it and realize there is more to life than being a football fanatic. Thanks Joe, thanks for being the best.

PS: Bill Walsh could run coaching circles around Belichick. Am I lying?

Sounds like a wonderful idea for all you pompous antideflagate defenders. In fact in would be great if you promote and practice on here…..time for you to start today.

If it wasn’t for his proven record as a cheater, he might be relevant!

    ——————————————————————-
The “cheater” concept was only proven in the minds of people that couldn’t understand 7th grade science. The rest of us watched 2 judges say that it wasn’t proven. Including a Chief judge. We also know that things drop PSI when its cold. Those that didn’t already know watched the numerous videos online.

    ****

It actually IS happening… I think it’s stupid, but yes, it’s happening.

  82. No matter what all the Neanderthals think, Brady is (at the very least) in the discussion for GOAT amongst a small few. It’s that simple.

All you detractors can humorously yell cheat, dink and dunk, schedule, Belichick, refs, Spygate, Deflategate, Tammy, etc. and all you do is reveal yourselves as fools.

No one, and I mean no one, could possibly cheat their way to the kind of success that Brady has had.

In his long and storied career, if the only thing you can say is “Well, he preferred the ball at the legal end of normal” , then that’s as thin of an excuse you guys can come up with to explain his greatness on the field. I know it hurts, but those losses happened because your team and QB weren’t as good as the Patriots and Brady. In life, the answer is usually the most obvious one.

I have no problem appreciating the best of the best even if they’re not a hometown hero–no excuses.

    Can you?

  83. News flash: You aren’t breaking a record when you already own it and are adding to it. Good grief, the way the media goes on about this guy.

  84. Montana is the GOAT. He played only 9 years on a contender yet matched Brady’s 4 Superbowls…without the help of the tuck rule or worst play call of all time. Brady was mostly a game manager for his first 3 Super Bowls and then choked twice against the Giants. Montana played against tougher competition including the 80s Bears, Redskins and Belichik Giants. Montana rarely was intercepted in the playoffs unlike Brady who was picked off in most of his Super Bowls and lost 3 AFC championship games due to late interceptions.

  85. I’m always hearing the Montana as GOAT argument and it’s a good one. I think part of Brady trying to play until he’s 100 years old is the hope that he can win 5 or 6 SB’s and erase all doubt. That’s got to be part of what drives him.

  86. Brady needs a 5th Super Bowl just to stay in the conversation for GOAT. Considering he’s already played 7 more years than Montana with a top team, if he can’t win 1 more SB his name shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as Joe Cool.

  87. Brady has the most playoff interceptions of all time now, GOAT!

The only reason that he has the most interceptions in playoff history now, tied with Favre, is because he’s been to the most playoff games. It doesn’t suddenly mean he’s worse than QBs with fewer INTs. Just the same, it doesn’t mean he’s better than QBs with fewer playoff TDs.

These records are due to being on consistently great teams his entire career. Getting 4 rings, like Terry Bradshaw did, is due to being on great teams as well. It doesn’t suddenly make Bradshaw a better QB than every QB with fewer rings. All it means is that he’s been on better teams. Just like Brady.

  88. No disgrace in second place for Bradshaw and Montana.

Great, just never could could win as consistently or for as long a time as Brady even with their huge advantage of playing before free agency.

When you win the most for the longest time under the toughest conditions, you are indeed the GREATEST OF ALL TIME. Anything he does from now on would just be icing the cake.

  89. “Tom Brady is the Greatest Quarterback of All Time”

    — just about every sports writer, football commentator in the country, not to mention several ex-NFL QBs, including one in the Hall of Fame.

  90. These records are due to being on consistently great teams his entire career. Getting 4 rings, like Terry Bradshaw did, is due to being on great teams as well.
    ______________

What you don’t get is that Brady MAKES those teams great. He’s done it time and time again with completely different supporting cast around him. He takes other teams’ cast offs, and makes them stars. He IS the system.
