Vikings spend many millions on offensive linemen

Getty Images

In Minnesota, they’re spending bigly on big uglies.

With the offensive line a major weakness for the team in 2016, the Vikings allowed top-four draft pick Matt Kalil to walk away in free agency — and they plunked down huge money for a pair of starting tackles.

Reilly Reiff, most recently the right tackle in Detroit, becomes the presumptive left tackle in Minnesota, with a five-year, $58.75 million contract. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Reiff received an $11 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $6.2 million in 2017, and a fully-guaranteed base salary of $9.1 million in 2018. That’s a full guarantee at signing of $26.3 million.

After 2018, the deal becomes a year-to-year proposition, with compensation of $9.5 million, $11 million, and $11.75 million in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Mike Remmers becomes the right tackle, with a five-year, $30 million contract that carries $10.5 million fully guaranteed at signing. With $3.1 million of his $3.9 million base salary in 2018 fully guaranteed at signing, it’s also a firm two-year deal and year-to-year thereafter.

The Vikings actually gave Reiff more than Kalil received in Carolina, a move that won’t upset many Vikings fans who had become exasperated with Kalil’s injuries and periodic ineffectiveness. The offensive line was more than periodically ineffective last year, due largely to injuries.

The ability of the team to thrive in 2017 hinges largely on the performance of the offensive line. With a relatively weak class of incoming blockers in the draft, the Vikings did what they had to do. We’ll see if it lets the team’s offense do what it needs to do to win games.

Don’t see how Minnesota is paying anymore than any other team
Detroit gave Rick Wagner $9 million/year
Cleveland has been shelling out millions like Tic-Tacs

In the way of the NFL World now
Huge salary cap space for teams, so they spend money

    Big deal!

It’s no surprise that a team would spend millions to upgrade a line that was so bad it may take billions to fix.

This is what GMs do when they are terrible drafters. And clueless fans eat it up, not realizing this fact, but instead troll other GMs who do it the right way (sign at their number). It’s really pretty simple.

TT doesn’t have to overpay for lineman because unlike Minnesota , the Packers have a good line and have in house replacements for Lang.

  15. realfootballfan says: Mar 12, 2017 2:06 PM

Rick Speilman was doing so well there for a couple of years, and then he lost his mind last preseason and continues to. Who thinks Reiff can play LT? Detroit probably would have tried that if it was a viable option the last few years as their line wasn’t exactly Cowboys North.

Yeah if only TT ran a team like RS does, then we would have a ton of playoff success just like the Vikings. 2 playoff wins in 15 years and your talking smack about a team that holds a record for consecutive playoff appearances.

  18. therealtrenches says: Mar 12, 2017 2:08 PM

I love how vikings fans have to justify overpaying to two average at best offensive linemen but taking a shot at Ted Thompson. Pack got 2 good TE’s which fit perfectly in the Packers system.

GB has the linemen available so they didn’t have to overpay. Vikings had the worst O-line in the NFL so Spielman didn’t have a choice. He tried the same thing last year, how did that work out?? That’s OK, keep telling yourselves it was a good move! Last year it was good enough for third place. How is that better than losing in the NFCCG to the hottest team in the NFC?

As a Viking fan, while I’m glad they’ve made moves to upgrade the line, the jury is still out on these two.

Reiff has not been a left tackle as a pro, and while Remmers graded out higher than last years’ Viking linemen, that’s not saying much. If these two stay healthy and play well, this will be a smart move. Now they need to find a couple more linemen in the draft.

Thompson’s team made it to the NFC Championship Game last year while Spielman’s initially went 5-0 and finished 8-8.

Speaking of playoff chokes, the Vikings’ have blown 4 Super Bowls, haven’t been there since 1977, and are 0-5 in championship games since then.

  29. marttizzle says: Mar 12, 2017 2:41 PM

The Vikings are just looking for stability and not a top-notch offensive line. We have other needs on this team other than OL that need attention. I think if we can get by with a Oline being suffice enough, we can get back to the playoffs, also I think the new lineman are an upgrade over TJ Clemmings and Matt Kalil. If we can have the line stay healthy and address a running back in the draft or FA we can have an offense that will be able to run the ball. If we can be just above average as an offense we can win games because our defense will be the rock that holds up against other team. A lot of ifs but I believe we fix the Oline next season!

  30. cheeseisfattening says: Mar 12, 2017 2:43 PM

  36. tjacks7 says: Mar 12, 2017 2:57 PM

Speaking of playoff chokes… Kaepernick single handedly destroys the defense. Defense totally collapses against the Seattle with 3 minutes left. Defense totally collapses against Arizona as Larry Fitz runs free. Defense doesn’t even show up against Atlanta who stops running the score up in the second quarter.

A rough few years to be a Packer fan as Ted continues to waste the final years of having a franchise QB. You’d think at some point he’d realize the defense is historically bad every year. One day, we’ll all look back and laugh at how badly he’s mismanaged the rosters.

I cut imagine there was much of a market for Reiff for that kind of price tag. IMO the Vikings overpaid here for Reiff. Given what he’s done in his career I’d say Reiff is more worthy to the same exact deal that Remmers got, perhaps a little bit more but essentially this is a 2-year deal that they can get out of if he doesn’t play well and then they can draft a LT again.

I’m sorry to say but Reiff is a RT not LT. Remmers was with the Vikings at the end month of 2013 after being released by SD and didn’t play a snap. Pro Football Focus gives these signings an F grade. Forget how does Sporano still have a job, how does Spielman? 1 ok signing in Reiff but Remmers, wait what. Why didn’t he even make a play for TJ Lang? It may be because the are planning on having Berger be RG. Then are they going to sign Mangold to play center. Are they going to make a play for Thomas and trade more future #1’s. Who is Spielman going to get as a nickel corner? What about RB? Wouldn’t Latavias Murray be a better fit than Lacy? What about safety? Don’t forget a big WR since Treadwell was such a collossal bust. Also the Vikings need a TE. Detroit signed all the people the Vikings needed. Spielman has been schooled by the rest of the league and still spent mega $. Things are ugly.

Cleveland’s was the worst. Gave up the most QB hits (140) and most sacks (66). Followed by the Colts, Cards, Seahwaks, Tampa and Falcons (106 QB hits and 37 sacks) before you get to Minny at 104 QB hits and 38 sacks).

I like the attempt to get players potentially in or entering their prime rather then players at the end of their careers like last year. Looking at the draft, it doesn’t look like the Vikings will have a shot at any surefire OL talent, so can’t blame them for going all out in FA.

Actually, you can (and do) make a lot of stuff up.

The laughing stocks of the NFL aren’t the teams that make it to the playoffs, win playoff games, and make it to the conference championship.

A better example of a “laughingstock” would be a team that goes 5-0, it’s fans speak about greatness, and then tumbles to 8-8 and completely misses the playoffs.

Packer fans are clogging this thread with negativity because they know the Vikings addressed their biggest need. Will it work? Who knows. They were good signings by spielman. There is now more depth on the offensive line as a result. It won’t be a great offensive line but it might be close to respectable. They didn’t spend outrageous amounts like this article implies. They were pretty normal amounts.

I think the Vikings need to find a better offensive line coach more than anything.

  66. purpleguy says: Mar 12, 2017 6:35 PM

Good grief, do fans, particularly cheesers, even pay attention to the details of these deals? These moves set up the team to draft an O-lineman, move Reiff to RT and dump Remmers in 2 seasons. Even cheesers should see that — unless they’re too busy trying to figure out what TT is doing with his O-line and defensive secondary during free agency to pay attention. But hey, you guys are set at TE right?

  67. whatjusthapped says: Mar 12, 2017 6:36 PM

It’s one thing to go into Free Agency in the first few days to lock up the top talent at a particular position, its quite another to go in and sign the middle of the road talent at high prices which is exactly what Spielman did.

He could have waited and gotten a better deal, neither one of these tackles are the core players that you build your franchise around but then again, neither is Sammy Check Down, or Flush Patterson or the Child Beater.

This article is a bit misleading. Last year Vikings paid Kalil $11.1m to sit (hurt) on the sideline and Andre Smith $3.56m (hurt) to also ride the pine for a total of $14.66m. The two new tackles count $8.5m and $5.1m for a total of $13.6m for the two of them.

So technically these new OT’s are cheaper that the dead weight we had in 2016. Won’t be hard to beat the productivity of last year.

That’s amazing. Sam Bradford just set an NFL record for completion percentage, and he barely knew his teammates’ names, and he had a terrible offensive line. Now that Bradford proved to be all the Vikings thought he was, they’re willing to spend big money to try to keep him on his feet. Smart move by Vikings’ brass. I expect to see a 12 win team.

If Matt Stafford wanted Riley Reiff to stay in Detroit, Reiff wouldn’t have vacated his locker. He played both right tackle and left tackle for the Lions. Detroit’s OL has been one of the leakiest in the NFL for several years. Detroit is beefing up the OL to make Stafford feel safe and happy.

Over the last 5 years, Stafford has been sacked 35 times or more every season. Last year he was sacked 37 times. The year before it was 44, and the year before that it was 43. That’s why Riley Reiff is no longer wearing Honolulu Blue & Silver.

Good luck to him in Minnesota.Maybe he needed a change of scenery and a fresh start. But I don’t think Vikings fans should expect any miracles.

Omg people do your research, reiff started career at Lt an actually did better there then RT plus gave up less sacks those 4 years then Khalil, oh an Remmers is upgrade over Andre smith an clemmings

Reiff was a no 1 pick and is straight-up better than Kalil. His draft position reflects in his pay scale (I believe). Mike Remmers also played both sides. he’s remembered best for getting worked in the Super Bowl, but he too is better than anyone Minnesota lined up at RT. Who can pretend they know how it’ll all work out? The no BS approach sees the Vikings finishing at 8-8 last year. Two additional mediocre performances by the O-line might add a game or two.

Or not. GM Rick signed the two bust guys he could.
