Howie Roseman: Joe Mixon’s talented, but total package is part of equation

The Eagles were the team that brought Michael Vick back to the NFL after he served time for abusing dogs, but executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman doesn’t think that makes the team a natural fit for Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon.

Mixon enters the NFL with a video record of punching a woman in the face in 2014 as part of his profile and Roseman said Thursday that he wouldn’t say the Eagles are “uniquely able to handle” a controversial acquisition because of their experience with Vick. He also pointed out the different circumstances surrounding the team, including a second-year quarterback and head coach, to what they were when Vick joined the organization.

Roseman stopped well short of saying that Mixon is off the team’s board, however, and pointed out Mixon has the kind of talent that the team might be looking for in a running back.

“You talk about the things you’re looking for in a three-down back, there’s not much he can’t do, “Roseman said, via ESPN.com. “He’s incredible with the ball in his hands, you can split him out, he’s got really good hands, he can pass protect, he can make people miss. He’s an extremely talented guy. But everyone that we talk about, the total package comes into the equation.”

That equation is one that will look different for each team, as evidenced by a survey Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel did as part of his annual pre-draft work. McGinn spoke to 11 personnel executives and six said they wouldn’t draft Mixon under any circumstance. Three said they would, although they differed on what round they’d pick him, and two declined to comment.

  1. Blah, blah, blah – The lying season is in full swing. Yawn. Gm’s will saying anything to maneuver things so they can get the picks they want. If a guy is rated highly, they will say something disparaging to hopefully make they guy fall to where they pick even if that is in a different round (lower). Ultimately, if a team can get the guy they want at a bargain price, they are going to do it.

  2. Ezekiel Elliot was almost rookie of the year with an allegation hanging over his head. Mixon’s incident was over 3 years ago but because his was on tape that makes him worse than Elliot. Somehow Mixon is a scumbag who shouldn’t be taken but Elliot is praised by the Salvation Army for jumping in a bucket.

  3. I really want no part of the side show.

Vick was bad. Mixon would be a lot worse. I have no desire to see Eagles fans acting like Ravens fans after Rice.

  4. It’s less than a week before the draft begins. Anything that’s being discussed with the media at this point, is generally designed to disguise their real intentions. So, in other words, don’t be surprised when there are draft day surprises. This is a chess match between 32 teams. Nobody is trying to help the other 31 teams. A lot of these owners have lived in the corporate world, and they have pretty thick skin. Most of the owners have worked with people who weren’t all choir boys. And who ever said choir boys were perfect anyway?

  5. Look, Mixon is going to be drafted, no matter how much negative press you give him. And…it will happen in the 1st rd.
Why? Because in the NFL…they talk about honor and good conduct and blah..blah..blah.. but where the cleats meet the grass, all they care about is talent.

  6. When talented running backs can be found in the later rounds (especially this draft where RB is quite deep), I don’t understand why teams would gamble on Mixon.

  7. What people don’t understand is that when Mixon threw that punch he identified as a woman. That makes it OK.

It’s because Mixon might be the most talented back in the draft. At the end of the day GM’s are judged based on their win-loss records and hitting on a guy like Mixon later in the draft could help the team win games. He will probably end up going to a team that dosen’t care about character (Cowboys, Bengals, Raiders).

  9. truninerfan49,

100% agree. The thing that seperates Mixon and the reason McCaffrey is rated so high is both are exceptional in the passing game.

Going forward in the NFL running backs will not only have to be great runners but also be exceptional in the passing game. The 3 best backs in the league are Le’Veon Bell, David Johnson, and Zeke Elliot. Bell and Johnson are on a different level as receivers than Elliott but Elliot is still a very good receiving back. Those guys are all going to get paid while big bruisers like Blount will find it hard to get paid.

  10. Michael Vick’s dog fighting was a well thought out plan for profit. Vick had plenty of time to think through the morality of it all. What Mixon did was simply the fight or flight response in action. The woman attacked him. He fought back. That makes a huge difference in my book.

Study up boy. You have no clue what you are talking about. Mixon started the whole thing….

  12. This guy is a cancer on society & has no business being offered a job in the NFL. This guy right hook knocked out a girl for rejecting his sexual advances, a girl he didn’t even know & did nothing to him. What he did was WAY worse than what Ray Rice did.

  13. If you think what he did was normal, or justified because she slapped at him (after stalking her down the street and into the bar) you have issues that probably need professional counseling.

That was not a normal response.

    -Civilized Society.

  14. All that baggage will be forgotten, if the team that lowers their moral standards WINS. What he did was wrong, but that’s how it will work in the NFL Some team will steal Mixon and never look back.

  15. “Mixon is a scumbag who shouldn’t be taken but Elliot is praised”

Mixon was guilty of punching a woman as the tape has shown. Elliot was accused of and has not been charged as well as the woman accusing has been said by witnesses to be making false claims. Not saying he should be praised, but until any evidence comes out to prove that Elliot did anything wrong, he should not be mentioned in any context with what Mixon did.

  16. Study up boy. You have no clue what you are talking about. Mixon started the whole thing….

The prosecutor did not charge him with a felony for assault. The outcome was a minor misdemeanor charge. It is not illegal to defend yourself even from a woman. The courts did the studying. You must have missed it.

  17. If Joe Mixon has baggage, then Dalvin Cook is pulling a U-Haul…and people are still talking him as a first round pick. Criminal history aside, I don’t really want either of them on the Vikings. Both are talented running backs with ball security issues. I’ve seen that movie before and it never had a happy ending.

If it came down to a lesser of two evils, I would trust Mixon to turn life around more than I would trust Cook who has a history of bad decision making going back to his juvenile days. Robbery, mischief, punching a woman (allegedly), animal cruelty…Lawrence Phillips 2.0

  18. When you pay QBs the crazy amount of money you now see in the NFL, you need versatility out of your other skill positions. RBs like Mixon and McCaffrey are the future of the position.

  19. In light of the NFL’s supposed hard line stance on domestic violence, why are they even allowing him the chance to be drafted??

Somewhere, Ray Rice is scratching his head.
And Roger is looking like a two faced moron, again..

  20. He should be drafted in RD 1.

You decide if you are going to keep him on your draft board or not. If you decide that you are keeping him on the board then what difference does it make where you take him?

What’s the difference if he’s a 1st rounder or a second rounder? Nothing. He’s still on the team. Your team will still have the same distraction and have to answer the same questions.

If you want him then have the guts to stand by that decision.

  21. I watched the video & can’t believe anyone would defend Mixon, let alone hire him. Pretty clear cut case of ‘Not Worthy’ to be in NFL, or CFL for that matter.

You are correct, it’s not illegal to defend yourself…which translates to no charges. He WAS charged & was convicted.

A prosecutor that didn’t want to trash his favorite football team’s new RB…

  24. I’m so sick of the High and Mighty self righteous people who act like they never did anything wrong at all. I get it, what he did was horrible. It happened 3 yrs ago. It was a bad mistake. It speaks volumes that his team mates and coaches and teachers all go against popular opinion and support him.
All the never sinned Christians who want to stone him to death need to look into the mirror. EVERYBODY deserves a second chance. As Jesus said ” he who cast the first stone”…

It always amazes me how clueless posters are on this site. A 49’ers fan posting about a team that doesn’t care about character????

  26. Obviously he will be drafted–just when?

With the face punch out in the open and other things kind of buried –the biggest question is will this Mixon resurface in the NFL, when he is given million$ of dollars OR has he changed his life and is he a decent citizens

My gut says Cleveland in the 2nd rd

  27. Mixon will get drafted, though much lower than his talent would indicate. The team taking him will have to do spin control. If he plays well, and keeps his nose clean moving forward, his past will be forgotten or ignored by most.

If a team would be willing to sign him as an undrafted FA, there is no reason to not spend a late pick on him. You will have to do the same spin control either way.

  28. “Ezekiel Elliot was almost rookie of the year with an allegation hanging over his head. Mixon’s incident was over 3 years ago but because his was on tape that makes him worse than Elliot. Except the girl who accused zeke had text messages to her friends asking them to lie about what happened In an effort to get him in trouble. His case was thrown out when it was PROCEN the woman was lying. And then Mixon is actually on video punching a woman in the face.

Please tell me again how they are the same?

  29. The Chiefs stole Tyreek Hill in the 5th rd last year and everyone has seen how well that turned out.

Some team will look to do the same thing with Mixon this year.

  30. If that was a black woman who slapped Tom Brady, and he punched her back, the outrage would be a heck of a lot less. At least that’s one thing we can all agree on.

  31. I’m undecided. In my view its similar to Ray Rice. They both hit a woman, terrible act. One was a grown man in his 30’s one a kid in his 20’s. 20 year old kid with no life experience and alcohol- bad for most that age. So if he excelled at something other than football, say accounting, could he leave school and get a job as an accountant?
Yes. So I say second chance due to age and circumstances.

  32. Draft him in the 1st round, he’ll be the best player available. With all these people who voted for trump do you think they care if he punched a woman in the face? Especially not after he leads the league in rushing.

  33. To everyone complaining that this kid might get drafted but Ray Rice didn’t get a second chance:

Ray Rice would have gotten a second chance if his last season before the slap was good. But his tires were already bald. I’m sure if he’d been his usual self that season, some owner would have found the “moral courage” to give him that second chance.
