Raiders would like to work out a new contract for Derek Carr soon

Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie said in March that he expected to get to work on a new contract for quarterback Derek Carr after the draft, and now he’s following up on that.

McKenzie said today on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he “will be pursuing Derek shortly” and hopes to get a deal done. McKenzie added that a new deal for guard Gabe Jackson is a priority as well.

Carr is heading into the final season of the four-year, $5.37 million contract he signed as a second-round draft pick in 2014. He’s scheduled to hit free agency after the season, and the Raiders would presumably franchise him if they don’t work out a long-term deal done before then.

After the 2016 season, which started with Carr playing well and ended with the Raiders struggling mightily after Carr got hurt, Carr has plenty of leverage. His next contract is likely to be one of the biggest in NFL history.

Franchise players cost eventually. Hard to keep them and everyone else needed to stay on top of a Division. He will be paid well, no doubt about it.

He’s the best thing to happen to the Raiders in a long time!

Kid’s good, plays QB and will be good for a while. Vegas Raiders pay up or he gets a Cousins deal, then opens his own casino there in 3 years.

Better get to it sooner than later, otherwise it could hurt ya worse. It’s gonna be bad irregardlessly

Every time any one anywhere is in line to get a big payday, some birdbrain has to chirp about “cap hell.”

There’s a whole lot of people with better jobs than you, who work out all that big, scary math. 32 groups of those people, in fact.

And NFL comtracts aren’t guaranteed, so at most a team has 1-2 years of shedding contracts and carrying dead money before they are out of trouble. Unlike the NBA, what happened with the Knicks since Ewing left, they’ve buried themselves under a mountain of bad deals. That is cap hell.

Irrelevant comment but I happened to witness this guy at a Saturday practice before the Billsast season and he was only 1 of 2 guy signing autographs for kids. Stayed with me that he’s a cool guy and I wish him a 6 year 140 million (75 guaranteed). Even the Raiders need character guys.
Yo Tice! You were super cool too.

he deserves to be paid. he helped turn around our franchise into legitimacy by playing well beyond his years. i wouldn’t let his recent gaffe obscure my thoughts on him. solid character and more than solid player.

Obviously keeping Carr is a must, but are the Raiders going to be able to keep Carr, Jackson and Mack?

Both Carr and Mack are going to get huge contracts!

He’s worth every cent, great player plus he’s a good kid

The Raiders are smart to try and sign him now.
Don’t end up in a situation like the Redskins with Cousins.

I’m hoping that Carr gets inked sooner rather than later. But the Raiders would have more to work with in this case if they hadn’t wasted valuable salary cap space on Marshawn Lynch.

After playing 4 years for peanuts, this one is going to burn, and Carr knows the Raiders over pay their top guy. No home discount bu Carr, only Vegas big daddy money! That’s the way it goes folks.
