Robert Kraft sees “envy and jealousy” of the Patriots around the NFL

Getty Images

Patriots owner Robert Kraft thinks that if his team is disliked by others in the league, it’s because others wish they had New England’s five Vince Lombardi Trophies.

Kraft said at the Bloomberg Breakaway Summit that he thinks opposing teams, jealous of the Patriots’ success, lobbied NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to come down hard on the Patriots over Deflategate not because they thought deflated footballs were serious business but because they wanted to gain an edge over the Patriots.

“Well, I don’t hold grudges, but I also don’t forget anything,” Kraft said. “Envy and jealousy are incurable diseases. If I had never won a Super Bowl — I’m going into my 24th season as an owner. I’m passionate about owning a football team in my hometown. If I hadn’t won, I would be so angry at our folks and thinking about what can I do to do it. So, our competitors, I understand how they brought pressure on the league office to be very strong and not compromise on an issue that was nonsense and foolishness.”

As it turned out, the Patriots won the Super Bowl and Kraft doesn’t think Tom Brady’s four-game suspension hurt the team.

“He didn’t play the first four games, which is 25 percent of the season. The good news is, he took no wear and tear on his body,” Kraft said.

When you’re successful enough that losing your starting quarterback for a quarter of the season can seem like a good thing in hindsight, that’s the kind of success that can make other teams jealous.

  6. philtration says: May 3, 2017 11:28 AM

    He is right.
It does not matter if you love, hate or don’t care about the Patriots one way or the other….
What the league did to them was B.S. and it is an insult to every single NFL fan.

  7. thrifty says: May 3, 2017 11:29 AM

Yeah, everyone is jealous of those “classy” Red Sox fans as well.

  8. azcardsfan3 says: May 3, 2017 11:29 AM

REALLY???? Couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that they got away with cheating for all these years with nothing more than a slap on the wrist, could it.

WOW Kraft is an intelligent son of a gun!!!!

  9. dawoger says: May 3, 2017 11:30 AM

We empathize with you Robert, we as Packer fans, for 56 years, have been putting up with the jealous rantings of the inferior wanabee Barneys.

  10. citizenstrange says: May 3, 2017 11:30 AM

For the millionth time … opposing teams lobbied NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to come down hard on the Patriots over Deflategate not because they thought deflated footballs were serious business but because Goodell gave the Patriots a free pass on Spygate deleting ALL evidence, behind closed doors, with zero transparency, without ANYONE ever seeing exactly what was on the tapes the nanosecond he got it. That was a dirty sleazy little crooked trick.

  11. footballfan58 says: May 3, 2017 11:30 AM

    Exactly. Agree with him 100%.

Having Brady and Bellichick’s chemistry was sheer luck, but this team also puts in hard work and is dedicated to the win. Other teams could so easily have the same thing if they wanted to put in the blood, sweat and tears for it.

  12. factschecker says: May 3, 2017 11:31 AM

As a Pats fan myself some of the ire is from a portion of Patriots fans that put down fans of anyone not the Patriots.

As fans we need to remember that we ourselves didn’t accomplish anything other than rooting for the team that happens to be on top at this time. We ourselves are not superior over any other fan that happens to root for a different team. As for the Patriot trolls, response is exactly what they are looking for. So I do my best to not give them what they crave. Ignoring them is like a cyber punch to their cyber face. They seek attention so it best not to give them any. You especially don’t want to call them by name. “OMG they remembered my name I’ll post twice as much from now on.”

Owner is a dumb as its fans. I’m pretty sure why people want the Pats to get disciplined is because… wait for it… this is going to be shocking… they’re cheaters? Rings will be forever tainted.

  16. whatjusthapped says: May 3, 2017 11:32 AM

But yet cannot see how cheating has tarnished the franchise’s reputation. The Patriot fans amaze me in one single respect, their ability to justify the cheating and claim no responsibility what so ever for the sleazy way the club handles its business.

  19. joaonmatz says: May 3, 2017 11:33 AM

    100% truth.

Vikings and Giants were caught on tape adultering football (putting them next to warmers) and nothing nearly as drastic come out of it.

One guy puts a needle in a ball in a cold weather, suddenly the NFL needs to spend millions on a investigation and get nothing definitive out of it, still they draconianly punish a team and a player for, perhaps, doing something with the balls at some point, probably.

I dont even support the Patriots, but as soon as the facts started to come out, it became clear that this had nothing to do with Deflation of football

  20. dal1as says: May 3, 2017 11:34 AM

As a Packer fan I know what he’s talking about. Believe me, I know.

The Packers are not as elite as the Patriots on a national level, but they’ve been very consistent. In the NFC North Division, Lions and Bears fans are great. Viking fans (not the good ones, the trolls,) are juvenile and predictable in their jealousy-filled rants. All they can ever come up with is insults and put-downs. They want what we have.

    We get it Mr. Kraft.

  37. chumpley says: May 3, 2017 11:44 AM

I totally disagree with Mr. Kraft. I never hated the Steelers in the 70s or the 49ers in the 80s/90s, when their dynasties were in full swing. That’s because those teams were not cheaters. Yes, I hate the Cowboys, but that is only because I am an Iggles fan. Jerruh Jones is a lot of things but he is not a cheater.

  38. flexx91 says: May 3, 2017 11:44 AM

  52. rolf1015 says: May 3, 2017 11:55 AM

So the haters are still obsessed with all things Patriots and just can’t come to terms with their 5 championships.

In their minds, all the success, now including the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, was only possible because they “cheated” by filming coaching signals from an “unauthorized location” during a game 10 years ago, or maybe because the NFL didn’t realize that cold weather causes footballs to deflate. This is really getting old.

  90. tylawspick6 says: May 3, 2017 12:39 PM

I’ve said it since Spygate. Goodell facilitated lies and told Kraft to take it up the rear end, but Kraft realized he was being completely bamboozled, being too nice, during Deflategate.

About time he defended himself and told the truth.

Goodell is a liar and so are the weasel, coward owners who were behind this cheating towards the Pats.

  93. sopadegato says: May 3, 2017 12:40 PM

He isn’t wrong. They’ve succeeded in forming a dynasty in an era of the NFL that’s set up to prevent it.

Look at the teams that were hammering them for Deflategate. The Colts? One of the worst GMs in the league, and an owner that got caught with a ton of drugs and cash. They’ve also been wasting the career of Andrew Luck, letting a Houston team with eight literal whos at QB somehow dominate the division.

The Ravens? John Harbaugh is a salt factory every time someone manages to outplay him (which is fairly often) and they flip-flop from Okay to Terrible more than any other team not named the Panthers.

Let’s be honest, it’s also the Boston fans. While there is an obvious and unmistakable jealousy of the Patriots, that comes more from.the owners and was why they lobbied Goodell to bring the hammer down upon them.

Boston fans on the other hand are rather unbearable. Take a look at recent actions in Fenway Park and then realize the trash the Celtics fans talk for being the Chicago bears of the NBA over the last 30 years. One title and one finals appearance.

Green Bay fans don’t create the same antimosity Boston fans do. Much of their dislike is self created rather than it merely being jealousy with regards to fans.

Besides, nobody was putting the screws to your team, you did it yourself.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, the Pats have been this good because they ARE that good. Anyone whose comments are in any way in contrast to this statement exhibits their pettiness and weak intellect, and it’s a desperate rationale to explain why their team is not as good.

When Brady and Belichick leave, the Pats almost certainly will sink to your team’s level, and you can crow all you want. And if your team manages to find the next GOAT HC and QB combo, your team will soar and you too will have to suffer the insults of the ignorant.

Sad that America, a country that used to celebrate excellence, has become a wussified “everyone deserves a trophy” place.

To the 11 or 12 people stiil out there who, for whatever reason remain confused about all of this…

Brady never stole your bike or your girlfriend. Mean old man Belichick never tied your shoelaces together when you were distracted by something silly Gronk did on the playground of life. It wasn’t warm Gatorade or stolen playbooks that made your hometown team lose. The point is, if you can’t see what’s going on right before your eyes now, you never will.

I guess you’re just going to have to keep coming up with more excuses, or, finally come to the conclusion that 99% of knowledgeable football fans already embrace.

The Patriots are the best run, most disciplined, well-coached team in the league, combined with the best QB-coach tandem in history. You don’t have to be from New England to see it, guys.

    Really, that’s it.

The only nit to pick is Kraft in essence is denying Goodell’s role in the league’s malicious punishment of the Patriots – the fact is the owners do not tell Goodell what to do, he tells THEM, and all the scandals of the league in the last ten years have one thing in common – the malicious ignorance of the rulebook, of the inner workings of teams, etc., and the personal sanctimony of Roger Goodell. No committee rule (as would be the case if the owners were truly the driving force as Kraft suggests) would have acted in such personal manner as has driven the varied punishments and coverups instigated by Goodell.

Also, if this were the owners driving the campaign against the Patriots, here is what the other owners would do – what the NBA did to Donald Sterling and vote to SEIZE the team away from the Krafts; they would cite “a culture of lawlessness that drives the Patriots organization and the refusal of present ownership to put an end to it.” That they’d be cutting the throat of the league’s entire integrity is of course manifestly true.

To help you out, they showed a sideline coach holding 2 fingers in the air to signify “cover 2”. Of course, however, this was done in plain view of 80,000 people in the stadium, who, if they looked at the sideline, could see the exact same thing that ended up on tape.

To help you out further, having a tape of a sideline coach making a signal that everyone could see anyways does not help you in the slightest to win a ball game.

At the end of the day, an NFL franchise simply needs to put a team on the field and win some games. The incessant whining about whether or not the Patriots cheated is irrelevant.

It’s clear that Belichick is the best coach in the modern age.

It’s just as clear that Brady is the best QB in the modern age.

    Deflated footballs?

C’mon, have you seen the Patriots win, season after season? Has nothing to do with all that noise. Did you see that last Super Bowl? The lack of mistakes, the consistent clutch performances under pressure, and the ability to make play after play was insane.

Personal attacks on Kraft, Belichick, and Brady are petty.

Redirect some of that anger towards 1) your team and the decisions they make and 2) yourself for choosing that team.

There is no way in the world I’m following organizations like the Jets or Browns, year after year, simply because I am from the geographic area or it was a family tradition.

Regarding deflategate, that could’ve been solved with a warning letter from the NFL to all teams to not change the psi of the footballs. Most teams probably thought this subject came under the title of gamesmanship, rather than an actual integrity of the game problem.

  238. plum54 says: May 7, 2017 1:36 PM

Varangia- the NFL had already stated the PSI could not be under 12.5, which was why Tom had the ball boys bring the written regulations highlighted to the refs. Tom wanted the footballs at 12.5, which was legal. Deflategate happened because the NFL was unaware cold weather causes footballs to Lose pressure.

It’s two one. One there are some of us that are annoyed that they got a slap on a wrist for spygate. It came out a few years back that Goodell covered it up (surprise) to defend the league. My Eagles made mistakes but reading the follow up to that reignited my annoyance there, that and I was a kid during that game so it’s still freshly ingrained. But that was a few years ago so whatever, Jerry Rice got away for stickum and the fumble.

But more importantly, as a fan it isn’t entertaining to know who the AFC Championship, and AFC Superbowl team, is going to be. My team is in the NFC and hasn’t been in the Superbowl for over a decade so I have no personal stake as a team fan. But as a NFL fan, it’s stale. Needs a shake up. Kind of like Big Ben and his Stelers being being the other team that makes the AFC Championship now that Peyton is retired. Or the Texans taking a playoff spot, they’re not an exciting match up as nobody expects them to do anything. But the Titans, it would of been nice if the Titans made it in last post season.

As a fan (whose team isn’t the Patriots or in the AFC) and player of the sport, the status quo on the AFC side is getting old.

I’m past the age at which I care enough to hate certain teams or players for any reason any other than low character (the Greg Hardys of the league, and such). But the constant whining, the smugness, the fans’ infantile behavior…it’s too much.

I understand why Brady was rankled by how Goodell treated him over the Deflate-gate thing. The whole episode was a fiasco. But other than that, I don’t see what the Pats’ gripe is. They’ve been caught with their hand in the cookie jar a number of times. They’re still the best team of the last 20 years by a very wide margin, but it’s obvious they blur the lines of fair and foul a lot. I’m sure it’s borne of the same competitiveness that makes them so good. But they certainly push it.

I just wish they and their fan base would back up all the talk about “the Patriot Way” and show a little class about winning. Belichick keeps his mouth shut. Why can’t everyone else?

Kraft will always deserve massive respect for funding his own stadium. Just doesn’t happen anymore.

Only after trying to get a government funded stadium not once, twice, but three times. I doubt when he has to build a new one, he would plunk down 2 billion dollars of his own money for it..!

    ============

That’s the way all owners do business but Kraft could have easily set up shop in Hartford or gone to St. Louis. But he decided to stay near Boston and fund it himself. He is beyond reproach in this regard.

To me and I think many others, it’s a fan base that for the large part has their collective heads in the clouds like THEY had something to do with all of the winning, talking down at every single opportunity to the fans of 31 other teams again as though THEY are a reason for their team’s success. Don’t get me wrong, you’d get fans like that for all 32 teams if they were consistent winners, but it has been multiplied by an insane number to this point by Pats fans. I have a ton of respect for Bellichick, he is hands down the best coach in the NFL. And even though I despise him, I do respect Brady and his passion for the game. So to me, yeah it’s largely the Pats fans and not the actual Patriots that rub me the wrong way.

  250. fireroger says: May 9, 2017 1:21 PM

The Pats fan base is hands down THE worst. But to be honest when their team wins as much as they do they have the right to be that way. Sorry but it is what it is. There are numerous of examples of other fan bases returning the favor when they win it all. For a whole year and sometimes even longer. Despite contributing little or nothing to the actual result. However, it’s really not that unique to just Pats fans.

To be fair it’s extremely rare that anybody admits to the fan base being the problem despite that being the case well north of 90% of the time.

Until the rest of the NFL can figure out how to get the best player in the NFL to play for $13 million per year the Patsies will continue to win. The solution is simple, beat them at their own game. Refrain from giving super-stars huge money. Sign B-tier proven free agent veterans to cap friendly deals to fill out the roster and coach the crap out of them. Trade malcontents and emerging stars before they command huge money. That’s it. The Patriots don’t fool anyone. What they do is fully out in the open.
