Tyrod Taylor has a backhanded compliment for Sammy Watkins

When Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor spoke to reporters on Thursday, he offered up some praise of receiver Sammy Watkins. Implicit in the positivity, however, was a sense that Watkins hasn’t always been a guy who does all the right things.

“The maturation process has definitely sped up for him,” Taylor said of Watkins, via video posted on the team’s official website. “He’s older in the league, he knows what it takes, he knows where he wants to get and he’s working towards that, even down to eating right and putting the right things in his body. His attention to detail each day has definitely been different than the years past that I’ve been around him. He’s always been a hard worker, but you can definitely tell that he’s out there with the right mindset and with the positive attitude, trying to help the guys that are around him.”

Lurking between the lines is the sentiment that the 2015 and 2016 versions of Sammy Watkins may not have been eating right or paying attention to detail or demonstrating the right mindset and a positive attitude. And that creates a potential dilemma for the Bills, if Watkins plays well enough this year to earn a long-term deal.

What happens after Watkins gets a huge contract? Will he be the guy he was in his contract year, or will he revert to a guy who isn’t pushing as hard as he recently has been pushing to maximize his talents? Before the Bills make a financial investment in Watkins that would be similar to the draft-pick investment they made three years ago, they need to be sure he’ll deliver on the back end.

I have this feeling that Sammy Watkins will not be on the team this time next season.
I’m not sure if it will be because he underplays, gets hurt or ends up being too pricey for the risk taking with his long injury history… either way I see this new regime as the type that doesn’t revert back to the “Old Buffalo Ways”.

It could also mean that Taylor is putting it out there to te Bills management Watkins is doing the right things to set the stage to keep him around long term. Bills management knows What Watkins has/hasn’t been doing and Taylor going public with this sounds more like an endorsement to me than a “back handed compliment”.

Playing less games each and every year is not a good trend for Watkins. Even fantasy owners are like, “Eh, I’ll pass.”

So saying that he’s doing something better than he used to is a backhanded compliment?
    Ummmm, ok.

Dude played last season with a broken foot….It seems to me that Watkins is in for the team and the long hall. Many other receivers including Beckham would have take the year off with that injury…

It’s the offseason, you always feel things will be different, every year.

    Then the season starts…..

So Tyrod insulted two years ago Sammy, by comparing him to the current, “better” version of himself. Got it.

Oh, grow up! The comment in no way implied that Watkins’s previous efforts were inadequate. You could just as easily read it as “he was making a good effort before, but now he knows EXACTLY what he needs to do, and so he’s taken his planning and prep to another level”. Not doing the best you possibly can doesn’t mean you’re doing a bad job…there is a HUGE gap between those two. Stop trying to stir up trouble.

That’s a whole lot of reading into things. Who wrote this! Babe… is that you?

“and putting the right things in his body.”

Translation: he needs to stop partying with the substances. This doesn’t mean food.

I think Taylor is hoping Watkins live up to his hype this season or they could both be gone from the Bills next season, not just Watson. And playing for a lot less money wherever they end up.

The new Bills management and coach won’t put up with lack of effort I think.

Sammy has a lot of talent. When you see him against the KC defense putting up 158 yds and 2 TDs in the first half, you are wowed.
He has stay on the field and show that talent consistently. When he plays, he is as good as anyone.

Come on. Backhanded compliment? Don’t look for insults, he was giving the guy a compliment and it sounds pretty genuine to me.

Exactly why the NFL can NEVER had guaranteed contracts. Would be foolishness.

as soon as peterman starts putting up mad stats with watkins, taylor will be an afterthought.

All three will be an afterthought, soon. The Bills are as far away from good skill players as they’ve ever been.

Sammy should drink some of that murky water that Brady drinks during the games. Just what does he put in that clear bottle with the gatorade label ripped off? Can’t be creatine as that is a banned substance in the NFL.
