Jim Caldwell isn’t interested in Kaepernick, but believes in him

The Lions don’t have a veteran backup to quarterback Matthew Stafford. They’re nevertheless not interested in adding Colin Kaepernick.

Via Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press, coach Jim Caldwell recently said that Kaepernick won’t be pursued by the team.

“[W]e have the guys that we want at this point in time,” Caldwell said.

Who they have other than Stafford is 2016 sixth-rounder Jake Rudock and 2017 sixth-rounder Brad Kaaya. That doesn’t mean Caldwell believes Kaepernick to be unable to play well.

“I don’t think there’s any question he’s capable,” Caldwell said. “I was on the other side of the field [with the Ravens]. Actually, I was in the press box, but nevertheless when he was playing for the 49ers in the Super Bowl. That was only a couple years ago. So, I don’t think that his skill level has diminished to the point where he would be completely ineffective in this league, so we’ll see.”

If Stafford gets injured, Caldwell will be facing more pointed questions about why the team doesn’t have a quarterback with playing experience, whether it’s Kaepernick or someone else. For now, the “someone else” list is down to the likes of Robert Griffin III, Christian Ponder, Shaun Hill, Luke McCown, and Dan Orlovsky.

  1. For now, the “someone else” list is down to the likes of Robert Griffin III, Christian Ponder, Shaun Hill, Luke McCown, and Dan Orlovsky.

If Stafford were to get injured the lions would grab up Shaun Hill/Dan Orlovsky without even thinking of Mr. kneeldown. Both players played
    Multiple years with Lions.

  2. if they signed him would be the last day i supported them. dude needs to leave america.

  3. “[W]e have the guys that we want at this point in time,” Caldwell said.

Perfect answer …. he didn’t say the wouldn’t look at him if there was an injury.

  4. I don’t get PFTs man-crush on Kaepernick. Do anyone else notice there aren’t any stories about RGIII not having a job. RGIII was arguably a better QB than Kaep and probably still is except for his injuries. I think for most, if not all teams is all the other stuff that surrounded him last year. He alienated a LOT of fans. Sure, he has the right to do what he did but that doesn’t mean people have to like it. If he had played a little better last year it might be a different story but when you don’t play well and have these other issues it should be a surprise to nobody that he doesn’t have a job. Why put time and energy into a guy you may not be able to trust?

  5. People keep mentioning the lack of stories about RGIII while at the same time they keep bringing up the fact that Kaep alienated fans and brings a lot of controversial baggage. They’re answering their own question. Griffin didn’t polarize an entire nation with his Subway commercials. We know that the only reason Griffin hasn’t gotten an offer is because no team has confidence in his on-field abilities any longer.

  6. This is incredibly silly! So much noise and concern about a player who has a limited skillset applicable to only a few offensive schemes and has alienated half of the NFL fan base. Stop this infatuation with a marginal player who seems to be unable to speak for himself. If he won’t fight for himself why should the bleeding hearts take up his cause.

  7. I’m not interested in Jim Caldwell nor do I believe in him

Dude has no passion for the game. He wont even argue a bad call that is clearly wrong.

  8. “For now, the “someone else” list is down to the likes of Robert Griffin III, Christian Ponder, Shaun Hill, Luke McCown, and Dan Orlovsky.”

The names on that list answer the question on their own of why he doesn’t have an experienced backup. They’re all terrible.

Better to give a young guy a chance who might turn out to be good then stick in a known failure that is very unlikely to play well.

  9. For all of those that talk about Kaepernick like he’s been mistreated (eh-hem Florio) let me remind you all of something…

HE OPTED OUT OF HIS CONTRACT IN SAN FRAN.

Yes, that is correct… he had a contract that was going to pay him 8 figures and he chose to opt out. So quit talking like he is the victim.

Teams probably aren’t in lines to devote a lot of time to a guy that wasn’t happy making $11mil with his original team.

  10. I don’t know much about their young guys, but I’m assuming they are good fits for their system and it wouldn’t be unprecedented for a late round rookie or 2nd year guy to step into action in case of an injury. Many teams don’t have veteran backups experienced in their system, and as mentioned they could get a guy like Shaun Hill off the street who wouldn’t need much acclimation.

I’m not going to insult your intelligence; I assume you read enough here to know something about NFL contracts.

At no point did Kaepernick turn down 8 figures. He had a choice: opt out or be cut. There was no universe in which San Francisco or anyone was going to pay him 8 figures to play this year. The 49ers were going to pay him exactly $0 of a renegotiated contract with $0 guaranteed. Opting out was his only smart choice if he wanted to sign with a team and make anything in 2017.

  12. @genericcommenter

I understand what you’re saying but I’m under the impression (and the current depth chart supports this) that they would have paid him $11mil this year to play had he not opted out.

But if Belicheat doesn’t argue a bad call he’s the greatest. Double standard much?

  14. If he was about to be cut…. and thus restructure his contract…. why then is he a free agent?

You can’t have it both ways. He did the deal because he would of been cut, but he ‘played well’ (no he didn’t… not by a long shot) and now…

  15. Caldwell believes in the tall, hairy, strange looking creature spotted in the Pacific Northwest. But he’s not interested enough to go out and set up a stand in the woods to try to get a picture.

  16. He probably saw what the rest of the NFC North saw last year: Not very good quarterbacking from the 49ers when Colin had to play. The 49ers vs. Bears game was dismal. He was like a deer in the headlights. Not very Kapernesque.

Go ask him that question: How much did your protesting affect your QB play?

You’re the journalists… get on it.

  17. Thank goodness for the daily Colin update – I was afraid with the holiday weekend we might have a lapse

Nuff said- I have no sympathy for this loser!

I really don’t like Kaepernick and think he sucks at QB but the dude donates millions in charity and hasn’t caused any real problems in this country yet you say “leave america”? What have you done lately?

  22. Wow, almost 24 hours between Kaepernick articles, I just started to wonder what was going on with Mr Kaepernick.

You do know this obsessive media coverage is exactly what every team in the NFL doesn’t want or need in their back up QB right?

  23. Why does PFT continue with this pointless crusade?

Kaerpernick is being blackballed for disrespectful behavior. Moreover, his performance has slid each season.

    End of story.

  24. Typical journalism of today.

Because they want to make him a victim every team is a bully.

What a garbage way to think

  25. Florio — give it up, will you? This is Memorial Day weekend — a time to honor those men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defending this country. The QB you keep whining about because you have a man crush on him should not have his name mentioned on this special weekend. I refuse to mention it.
This is a time to honor service men and women who died for this country and respected and understood what our National Anthem and our flag represent.
That piece of garbage you keep whining about should be banished to the South Pole. I hope he never plays in the NFL again, and if he does, I will not watch any game he is a part of, even if it’s as a spectator on the bench. Millions of good Americans across this great country agree with me.

  26. Another day, another PFT article whining like a baby about how their boy Kaepernick doesn’t have a team. For the 521st time, if he was talented enough, he’d be under contract. Talent will make teams overlook any distractions or other negative things that come with a player.

  27. If PFT was writing this much about a woman those behind it would be arrested for stalking.

Let it go. It’s 2017 and people are no longer afraid to say they don’t like someone with bizarre and divisive left-wing politics that wore socks depicting police as pigs while refusing to stand for the national anthem.

  28. I find it odd that people are upset enough to ban Colin from the league, yet don’t seem to be upset at the large waste of taxpayer money when military jets, bands and other trappings are used at NFL games.

If you don’t want signs of politics at games, that is fine, but it goes both ways.

You don’t see flyovers at Major League games, for instance. How about keeping the NFL focused on playing football games and not making political statements?

  29. It’s only recently that people who stand up for their beliefs feel they aren’t expected to deal with the ramifications. I’m not arguing whether or not this should be held against him, but it’s not bravery if there isn’t also an associated risk. If you want to be controversial but not face any risk, then you’re just a diva.

  30. Enough already about Kap! We don’t need a daily report on an unemployed QB. Stop being the surrogate for this washed up QB. He gets what he gets as all NFL players do. It is a privilege to play in the NFL not a right bestowed by the liberal press. The press is trying harder to get him a job then he evidently is. Leave it to the liberal media to take up this washed up QB as they love to promote their progressive social issues.

  31. All i need to know is: He’s still not signed?

    Awesome! Another good day.

These sports writers must go to bed every night frantically searching for a new way to keep him into the discussion.

Not signed yet? Oh their frustration is growing.

  32. Lions need to grab Zach Mettenberger….a cannon arm pocket passer

Need to have a backup similar to your starter so you aren’t changing offenses mid-game or mid-season.

  33. Why would u want a back up who can’t run a normal offense? Kap can’t read the whole field and go threw progressions. The only teams that make sense are Charlotte and Seattle. I think it’s the Tim Tebow effect. Noone wants a backup qb who draws attention expecially when a segment of the population think he’s a bad guy. I wouldn’t sign him and I like kap.

  34. What a bunch of BS. Way to go out on a limb!!! You might as well just shut up instead of saying something stupid.

  35. Even the rabid fans who beat the daylights out of drums at hockey games are looking at Florio like, “Really, still banging on this one, eh?”

  36. “But if Belicheat doesn’t argue a bad call he’s the greatest. Double standard much?”

How long did it take you to erect that strawman of a point that no one else made?

    lol

  37. It is unbelievable how many people want him arrested for hate speech. These jingoistic fools who think America is the greatest place in the world make me sick. Canada gives all of its citizens free health care and a social safety net while Trump tells everyone to get a job or too bad, starve for all he cares. Kaepernick needs to sue Trump for keeping him from getting a job, and take the lawsuit money to continue his chartable works. Trump supporters are running from him in droves because they see Kaepernick will continue to stand up for the rights of minorities and immigrants.

  38. Kaep didnt have a bad year last year.

    Games played: 12
    Yards: 2,241
    Completion %: 60%
    Touchdowns: 16
    Interceptions: 4
    QB Rating: 90

    Rushed: 468 yards
    Touchdowns: 2

Thats not bad if you are looking for a backup QB.

No. They would not have paid Kaepernick one dime. Kaep met with Kyle Shannahan and John Lynch to discuss their future. They told Kaep that he wasn’t in their plans for 2017.

  40. Well to be fair, if Detroit loses Stafford they ate done done done and it makes no sense to invest an extra dime into the season for anyone Kaep or otherwise. Throw a practice squad guy in there, finish the schedule, amd look for next year.

And also, this guy gets a story a day of media attention on how he is getting treated. No way any team wants to bring that commotion into their clubhouse.

Thats not to bad if you are looking for a backup QB to fill out garbage time minutes, because thats where he got those stats. When the game counted and the defense wasnt just giving plain vanilla he was horrible.
