Vikings are looking for a kick returner

The Vikings have had great kickoff returners for most of the last decade, with first-round receiver yielding to first-round receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. Now, for the first time since Harvin arrived, it’s unclear who will be returning kickoffs for the Vikings.

“We’ve been fortunate to have some very talented returners who have played for us here in Minnesota,” special-teams coordinator Mike Priefer recently told the team’s official website. “I think when you have a good returner, that makes everyone else around them better. They listen more attentively during the meetings, they study harder.”

The Vikings currently may have a good kickoff returner. They just don’t know who it is.

“At the end of the day, there’s been a lot of talented guys that have been here and they’re fun to coach, but we’re going to find someone that’s a pretty special kickoff returner,” Priefer said.

The candidates include fifth-round receiver Rodney Adams and seventh-round receiver Stacy Coley, along with veteran punt returner Marcus Sherels (pictured).

“Maybe it’s by committee,” Priefer said. “We have several candidates and I’m excited about that. We drafted two guys who could do it. We’ve got guys on the roster that want to do it.”

Every team has guys on the roster that want to do it. The question is whether they can catch the ball, make a good decision as to whether to bring it out of the end zone (where applicable), gain enough yardage to give the offense the boost it needs, and not cough the thing up.

  1. Priefer says: At the end of the day, there’s been a lot of talented guys that have been here – Yes, and unfortunately they’ve pissed away several years of their lives!

  2. Camp returner. They got their someone already. This purely a test the water competition.

  3. The entire special teams unit with the exception of the long snapper will be different. I can’t say for sure if the Vikings know who will be kicking and punting for them either. Forbath was okay last year. Didn’t miss a FG, but missed 2 PATs and had another blocked. They also got Marshall Koehn, but I don’t know much about him. I’m still hoping they give Conrad Ukropina a look. The guy made 98% of his kicks under 40 yards (including PATs) Leg strength is a question mark as it wasn’t really tested at Stanford. Since the Browns drafted a kicker, Cody Parkey probably becomes available. He had a rough first game, but was pretty good the rest of the season. Don’t know much about the punters..Symmank was decent in college and Quigley has had some good years for the Jets. Us fans have been asking for competition for a while now…I suppose this is what we get.

  4. NFC North Champs this year by at least two games over last years fluke Lions, the still don’t have a clue Bears and the over the hill Packers. You read it here first!

  5. Wait till next November to talk smack … As you never know whats going to happen like being 5-0 coming out of your bye and then the players decide to lie down on the ground and woller like a bunch of dying bugs … like Anthony Barr and his friends did last year …. Yea we saw you quit on your team mates and fans….. We deserve better than that !!!!!!!

  6. Packer backers out in full force. Good luck this year guys. Add McKinnon to the list of possible returners.

Zimmer can have 50 surgeries, and he’s still not going to be able to see the Vikings in the playoffs.

    ——————————————————————-

He already saw his team in the playoffs…would have won too if Walsh didn’t choke…..It would be nice if the trolls on here at least had some decent material…

  8. as a vikes fan what does it matter if the returner don’t score… their offense is a joke. worst run game last year with one of the best returners.

  9. His kick return skills were not the reason he was let go.

Teams might want someone who can actually contribute to other aspects of the game too- such as catching passes. Patterson- as much as I liked him- was not that guy.

    Have fun in Vegas.

That’s funny….we just picked up the leagues best returner for cheap, guy named Patterson.

    – Raiders

Yea buddy !!!! he was one of those who quit last year with barr !!! Good luck with that and his fumbling when he has 54 yrds of open field ….. can you spell C-H-O-K-E ………

  11. I love how deeply the Vikings are embedded into Packer fans Heads.. They post more replies than we do.. Pretty sad tho when they have to have more than one account to be heard….
Same old Trolls every story, every day.
It must be why there are no Goats in Packerland, and don’t cross those bridges.

  12. I spent a long day working and finally sat down 12 hours later to catch up on the Vikings news. It is an interesting article and we have had exceptional returners. I like to read what other fans say. Every now and that it caused me to rethink my opinion. Could those of you posting on a second grade level give it a rest? I am sure you have your own thread. Gee this gets tiring.

Vikings are offseason champions yet again. Too bad it doesn’t translate to actual football games.

Says the troll that is pissing away the vast majority of his, or her, so called life, trolling Vikings news threads.

  15. A great kick returner can get you to the sb, ask the 2006 Bears. But what is better than that would be a Carl Cheffers, ask the 2015 Packers.

  16. Here is one area that the Pack has never been a threat! I don’t know why they post all the garbage when that is what they have?

  17. If there is any team in the NFL i’m the least worried about having a good kick returner it is the Vikings.

They always seem to pull one out of nowhere and end up with the best in the NFL.

  18. Sherels, Patterson, Percy Harvin..

Still have the best punt returner in the league….

  19. I have to laugh at the haters as well as fellow fans of the Vikings who use the words lay down, etc, when talking about the collapse after the 5-0 start. You don’t think the loss of both starting tackles, both their backups, starting RB, the RG, center for a time….and that’s not even mentioning the injured starters on defense…..had nothing to do with the collapse? Like the Falcons unexplained one a year prior. Take any team, especially the Lions & Packers, and just for grins, give their 2016 even 50% of those losses of players, and they would both have been hard pressed to finish ahead of the Bears in division. I’d bet the farm that neither the Pats or Falcons get to the post season, yet the superbowl, had they suffered equal lost talent. If you’re gonna make a blanket, and yes, a stupid and uneducated guess as to why the season went the way it did, at least learn somewhat of that that you are talking of.

  20. How many kick returners make a huge impact in the NFL? Not many. Patterson and Hester have been the big ones over the last decade, And while they made an impact, Not all of those returns won football games. Punt returns have the same effect as well, But the name of the game is still offense and defense. The Vikings will find a returner before the season starts. The Vikings success this year will be predicated on a revamped offensive line and new offense under Pat Shurmer and a reworked running game. The defense is top 5 and legit and will be much more dangerous with a better offense on the field. The Vikings are the only team in the division that can overtake the Packers, and that is fact. Look no further than Zimmer’s record when the vikings score 20 points or more.
23 and 3. Offense wins games now, not kick offs.

“First 3 comments are from packers, get a life.”

I have a hunch they weren’t from the team.

    ////////////

You’re really stretching it there filthy, of course they weren’t from the team. Most of the team went to college.

  22. First 3 comments are from packers, get a life.

Only 3? I’ve seen entire packer threads that had nothing but skolltrolls. Let us know when it gets that bad.

It’s all so juvenile anyway. Grown men taking anonymous potshots at others on a comment section. Ridiculous.

I don’t recognize the name. Was he the guy that threw the ball seventy-five yards in the air, or was he the guy that out-positioned and out-jumped everyone else and caught it?

  24. True vikings fan-

I will take Zimmer’s word on whether or not the Vikings quit or not over yours. Zimmer said they didn’t quit. Not sure how close you are paying attention.

That’s easily the most jealous whine I’ve heard all week. Big baby.

  28. Are you serious?
The game was over and the Packers were out of the playoffs. Carl Cheffers did more for the Packers than AR could ever do.
My goodness, just admit it one time for crying out loud. The phantom face mask call saved your season.

You’re saying Cheffers purposely called it to benefit the Packers?

Not only are you a whiny baby, you’re obsessed and delusional. Not a good mix.

It’s time to get over it.

  31. Not a big concern for me. The Vikings have good special teams and coaching there. Their return game has been good for years. They have guys that may not be as good as Patterson but good enough to be productive.

But more importantly, are they looking at signing Kaepernick?

    )))))))))))))))))))))

With no guarantees that Teddy can play again. I think the Vikings should pick up Kaep before the price increases. He has talent, he was a PI call away from being a SB champ. The refs swallowed the whistle.

  33. Only thing that matters is the next 16 games.

The Vikings thru a crap-ton of resources at their two biggest weaknesses; O – line and RB. Both in free agency and the draft.

If nothing else it should be fun to watch it all work out next season!

  34. I can find many people that can throw 75 yards and I can find many people that can jump up and catch a ball. What I can’t find is someone that can take a football game that is over and give me an extra down.
    And I don’t spell my name with a “c”.

Maybe one year the packers can actually earn a playoff spot.
