Martellus Bennett sends Aaron Rodgers some weird texts

Getty Images

Packers tight end Martellus Bennett has made it a point to get close to quarterback Aaron Rodgers since signing with Green Bay.

But the way he’s gone about it one you might not expect, at least until you consider the source.

Via Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin, Bennett has his own way of communication with his soon-to-be-bestie.

“I send a lot of emojis and GIFs and stuff like that to him. Other than that, it’s just conversations,” Bennett said. “That’s pretty much it. I tell him things like, ‘I like chocolate chip cookies. What kind of cookie do you like?’ I just tell him little things. Like, ‘Hey, look my daughter did this today. She’s jumping, or she learned to use the potty.’ Stuff like that.

“It’s just conversation, making friends.”

As they progress through the early stages of Organized Team Activities, Bennett’s also learning that the best way to earn his new quarterback’s love is knowing what he’s doing on the field, in terms of learning the playbook.

“I’m always talking to him on the field, too, trying to see what he wants,” Bennett said. “‘Hey, how did that look?’ or he’ll give me the thumbs up. Or if I’m in another group, I always look back at him, ‘Hey, is that what you want? Is there something different you want on this?’ Always trying to figure out, just trying to have those conversations on and off the field, trying to get know each other as players, and as people.”

Rodgers may have an easier time in those conversations, as you can only wonder his reaction the first time he glanced at his phone to see a poop emoji (or worse) from his new tight end.

I think Bennett is an outstanding TE. Tough as nails too. He was playing hurt all last yr. Really enjoyed him playing in New England. But, he is a little off the reservation. In a funny, quirky way. Last XMas day he walked around Boston with his dog dressed in a dinosaur costume. Bennett wore the costume, not the dog.

Vegas should have odds on the number of team this clown with end up playing for. New team every couple of years after he wears down the coaching staff with his antics.

Given the nutjob Rodgers was dating until a couple months ago, this is probably more normal to him.

For everyone else it’s weird unless you are 11 years old and desperately trying to get some other kid to like you.

He may be a bit odd,but the guy is a winner and a team player. I wish he had stayed in New England, but I wish him the best anyway.

This clown played great in Gronk’s absence all year in NE and won a Super Bowl. Nothing but respect for him. I am pretty sure NE doesn’t win the Super Bowl without him. Green Bay are lucky to have him. Great player.

Green Bay just have to deploy Bennett properly. Bennett wants to be primarily a receiver, but he is one of the best blocking TEs in the league. Belichick convinced Bennett to do what was asked of him and he was put into an ideal role. Bennett admittedly didn’t love it though. First thing he said after the Super Bowl is that he wanted to get back to catching passes. McCarthy has to be tough on him.

    He’s not any good.

  12. codythao35 says: May 29, 2017 4:21 PM

The interview with Bennett and his brother after the Super Bowl was hilarious. Two guys that truly seem to enjoy family, football and life. That said, Aaron doesn’t care about his own family, I seriously doubt he cares about Bennetts.

Players have respect for Belicick. Players have no respect for McCarthy. No way a head case like Bennett is going to follow McCarthy. He was a wasted FA pickup. gb does not need help on offense, should have spent the money on defense.

Never seen “Great TE” so loosely thrown around in my life. If he was great he wouldn’t be on his 4th or 5th team.

He’s a Good TE nothing more.

Great TE’s were Tony Gonzales,Winslow Sr, and and Antonio Gates, not Martellus Bennett

Classic – a skoltroll saying that Packer players dont respect their head coach. This from a fan of a team that during a 3 and 8 run to ruin a season just last year – the defensive backs openly admitted they went rogue and ignored the play calls from their coaching staff. Love it. Football cant come soon enough.

  20. hawks1124 says: May 29, 2017 5:28 PM

Green Bay did help it’s defense ( my heart broke when they drafted King), and Bennett is a great tight end. I’d trade him for Graham straight across if offered. Bennett fits Hawks offense better anyways.

I never second guess Belichick but after reviewing some of the plays Bennett made on the Pats 5th championship CD, I wish we still had this weirdo for the million $ or so more.

Could be worse, at least he’s playing for Rogers. If Pats can’t do it, maybe Rogers can get another one.

You’re a genius. Reggie White was awful, too. That’s why the Eagles “let him walk”. Adam Vinatieri was too terrible for the Pats. Deion Sanders? Same thing. Cody, teams let good and great players leave every single season when they realize or feel that they can’t afford to retain that player at that player’s market value ($$$) without sacrificing in some other area.

GB needs help on offense. They had second rate receivers for most of last season. They need 3 good players, Cobb, Nelson and Bennett should be able to get the job done.

Well, let’s see. Dallas still had Jason Witten performing at a high level when Bennett’s rookie contract expired. Kind of a no-brainer.

The Giants? I’d like to know that story too, but their TE production fell off the table the following year. Bet they wished they had him back.

The Bears? They judge talent worse than the Vikings these days. He was actually productive with Jay Cutler throwing him the ball. If Bennett was a distraction, he was nowhere near what Brandon Marshall was.

The Patriots? He signed a one year contract, filled in admirably for Gronk. But it doesn’t make much sense to pay that kind of money to two TEs, plain and simple.

If he stays healthy, he WILL contribute a great deal to the Packers’ offense, no matter what haters think.
