Eagles sign Derek Barnett to rookie deal

The Eagles have landed their first-round pick.

The team announced on Thursday that defensive end Derek Barnett has signed his rookie contract, a standard four-year deal with an option for the fifth year, which would happen in 2021.

The 14th overall pick in the draft that was held in Philly, Barnett played college football at Tennessee. Even though he passed on his senior season with the Volunteers, he broke Reggie White’s career sack record there.

Barnett’s presence could pump up a defense that performed well at times in its first year under former Lions coach Jim Schwartz. Though the Eagles finished fourth in the NFC East last year, they started 3-0 and finished 7-9, putting them in great position to make a run at the top of the division in 2017.

The Eagles season will hinge on the coach learning from his rookie year as much as his rookie QB. Coaching blunders cost the Eagles at least 2 games but I am hopeful they were just rookie mistakes and the staff learned from them.

This guy was way over drafted, so don’t expect him to come in and dominate. He’s a solid player, but he’s more like a 2nd or 3rd rounder. He’s not a bust by any stretch, but he’s not a #14 guy. Championship teams are built with solid guys, and he’s solid, but at #14 you really should be getting impact players. Grade C-

And the Eagles are still the only team in the NFC East that has never won a Super Bowl. The other NFC East teams have Multiple Super Bowl Wins

    Cowboys 5
    Giants 4
    Redskins 3
    Eagles No Super Bowl Ring

I think you’re referring to Marcus smith. Regardless, Cleveland might regret taking Garrett because I know, as a vol fan who watched almost every game the last 20 years of my life, that this dude has a motor. He doesn’t run around you, he runs through you. I won’t even speak on the ministers record that he broke (in 3years) but I think the NFC east might Take notice….who knows, I might be wrong but I actually watched him in college…so I doubt it.

We were 5-1 last year with Lane Johnson. If he can stay healthy and not get suspended, I think we will have a better record than 7-9.

Yeah without a doubt Eagles beat Detriot and Dallas if they have even average head coaching in the 4th quarter of those games.

It’s been that way since 2012 or so and that’s not happened…

Outside of corner the rest of the defense looks to be really good. Corner is a big question mark but at least the future looks bright in Sidney Jones and Rasul Douglas. I think if Mills is improved and Patrick Robinson stays healthy, you have a fighting chance. Aaron Grymes is a name to watch. If Sydney Jones does play at some point that’s another body. As an Eagles fan you definitely feel better going into this season with quite a few options than last with Carroll and McKelvin.

    “Too” bad……

Yet somehow they managed to finish 13th in the League in passing yards allowed despite nearly all of their games being decided by 1 posession (meaning teams weren’t just running clock protecting huge leads)

When the front 4 gets home more often this year(and they will), that mitigates the lower talent level at CB.
