Marshawn Lynch rockets to top of jersey-sale list

AP

When word first surfaced of retired running back Marshawn Lynch possibility un-retiring and joining the Raiders, it became obvious that his Silver and Black No. 24 would instantly become the hottest-selling jersey in the NFL. And it has.

As noted by the Twitter account @Hail_Pitt, Lynch had the No. 1 jersey for the month of May. The list got the attention of Pitt aficionados because Steelers rookie (and former Pitt) running back James Conner debuted at No. 11 on the list, higher than any other Steelers player.

Others of note include Patriots quarterback Tom Brady at No. 2, which is significant because wouldn’t anyone who wanted a Brady jersey have one by now? Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott finished at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively on the list of May sales.

Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson debuted at No. 5, the highest of all rookies — and a possible indication of the degree of patience Houstonians will have with starter Tom Savage, if he sputters in September.

Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. stands at No. 7, behind Raiders quarterback Derek Carr. The rest of the top 10 consists of Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz at No. 8, Falcons receiver Julio Jones at No. 9, and Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski at No. 10.

Men that wear the names of other men on their back are quite pathetic.

    ____________

Men who spend time worrying about what other men put on their bodies are even more pathetic.

  2. You can’t have enough Tom Brady Shirts.

I have 12 Brady Jerseys for myself and 6 for my wife and 4 for my daughter.

I plan on getting divorced and having more kids just so I can justify getting more Tom Brady Jerseys.

If Brady ever switches teams he will have the largest jersey sales of all time.

  3. Others of note include Patriots quarterback Tom Brady at No. 2, which is significant because wouldn’t anyone who wanted a Brady jersey have one by now?
    —————————
That’s a huge point to anyone (looking at you, Cowboy fans, but also many column-inches hungry media-types) who use annual jersey sales as indicator of an individual player’s popularity. Brady has been playing in the same jersey for 17 years (the current design came out the year he joinedthe team in 2000). The fact he’s still monstering the sales (and he was actually #1 in the year going Feb-Feb) is an incredible feat in his 17th season in the same jersey.

  4. Marshawn Lynch jerseys might be #1 this week, but next week my Las Vegas Raiders “Elvis” jerseys hit the streets. Get ’em while you can!

  5. Fools buying any over priced jersey, Lynch’s or any other player’s jersey. Donate that money to a food bank, wear a $20 shirt instead of a $200+ jersey. Put that money to good use.

Your point is well taken, but can we give volunteers at the food bank who are wearing an Elvis jersey a pass on the “fools” accusation?

Heck, i bought one and i’m a Pats fan
    ==========================

It’s sad that you have to keep up that pretense just to feel relevant chipster. Sad for you that is, Pats fans still find it amusing.

  8. Sad. The Raiders jersey has got to be in the top 3 of the most boring jerseys in the league. Plain black and silver? Seriously need a new design for the first time ever.

  9. Many of the people buying these Jersey’s are gang members. Sales will continue to be strong for this jersey for that reason alone.

  10. The Brady jerseys with the SB 51 logo were very hard to come by. There was a ridiculous shortage. How does the NFL marketing end or at least the end that handles that type of thing mess up so badly?

  12. “wouldn’t anyone who wanted a Brady jersey have one by now?”

Silly question. No. There’s a new crop of fans every year and new converts too. Others wear them out. Wives throw them away or take them in divorce settlements. Still others want both a Home and Away jersey. Somebody else has never had enough money until now that Trump is Pres. There will still be a market for Brady Jerseys 10 years from now.

  13. The Marshawn Lynch Raiders jersey will go down in history with the Emmitt Smith Cardinals jersey, Jerry Rice Seattle (or Denver) jerseys and Joe Namath Rams jerseys. People will do a double take when they see them and then remember a once great player hanging on too long and playing a forgettable year (or two in Smith’s case) with a franchise that hopes they can find the fountain of youth.

As for Brady being number 2 the bandwagon is always taking new fans .

Well the population in NE hasnt gone up so it must be fans of your team switching sides. Ouch.

You don’t change an iconic uniform. It’s constantly ranked in the top 10 for all sports uniforms worldwide. I’ve met people in other countries wearing Raiders gear that have never seen an American game in their entire lives. Say the Silver and Black to any football fan and they immediately know who you’re talking about. Carr, Mack and now Lynch are all ranked in the top 15 in jersey sales, so a lot of people are buying those boring jerseys. I’m pretty sure Raiders fans would take Mark Davis out if he ever tried to change the uniform.

Brady at #2 is due to the true bandwagoners jumping on board with the Pats.

    ———

Could be…..there are quite a few fans of other teams using “Patriots” as part of monikers on this site. I always thought they were merely mentally disturbed, but you could be onto something

  17. It sounds like the 2012s have finally realized that one year dynasty ended a long time ago and they’re updating their allegiance.

  19. When he was playing for Seahawks, he would disrespect the fans, coaches and press all the time. He knows how to use/play the media to his advantage. Now that he needs a favor from the press, he has started talking to press (like the first year he was with Seahawks).. During SB 49, he was shouting out for Oakland and not once to Seahawks or Seahawks fans who supported and still love him in Seattle. Even the full page Ad, he took after moving to Oakland is not heartfelt as I feel his real intention was to disrespect the coaches by not Thanking them. #ArrogantBeast

    -a disappointed Seahawk fan.

  20. Tiki is flabbergasted that he could have more sold than Krapernick!

  21. Slow clap for Mr Bowl Cut in Oakland.
3 of the top 15 are Raiders…after he announced the team is moving from the Bay.
I know it’s support of the player, but it’s also good for him to know they haven’t totally turned their backs on the Silver & Black.

  22. This works out perfect for the league, tons of Raider fans bandwagoned over to being Seattle fans when the Raiders were down for years. They love Lynch and now they are back to being Raiders fans now they have suddenly become good. NFL cashing in big selling the same fans Lynch’s jersey twice.

lynch is a slur and shouldnt be aloud on the back of jerseys.

    Aloud? Duhhhhhh

You shouldn’t be “aloud” to comment

  24. coguy74, you need to let go. If you were talented enough to play football for a career but had a chance to play for Seattle for one season at the end, you know you’d do it. Cut Lynch some slack…he’s living his dream.

  25. If I ever get to see my favorite team in person I’ll wear dark suit, blue shirt with white collar, pink tie, and Nike Air Force shoes

If thats what it means and Brady is #2 after 17 years then this must be happening at a horrifying rate.

  29. Brady’s sales are high because everyone that had one previously, burned it at half time during the last Super Bowl. Now they are just replacing it.

  30. So Beckham was pronounced the biggest all time super star and he can’t even move enough jerseys to get in the contemporary top five?

  31. I guess I don’t understand why fans buy these overpriced shirts.

In the past I had thought it was because they were an important player for the team that they are fans of. But now Raiders fans are apparently buying shirts of a guy that hasn’t played one down for their team yet.

The most fitting thing would be if Marshawn flopped in his 2nd NFL career and all those people were stuck with $200 rags.

I think most of that hype comes from Beckham himself and he already has one.

  33. Catmando – Giants fans aren’t jersey wearers for the most part. Men wearing jerseys is embarrassing. I’ll bet anything that the bulk of OB jersey wearers are kids who don’t even like the Giants.

How about instead of wearing $20 NFL-licensed shirts (or really, any shirt), you go to Target and buy some plain t-shirts for $8? For each shirt you have $12 you could donate to charity. You’re so selfish.

I have a Bills Marshawn jersey that I bought for $50 at a convenient store.

  36. A few factoids about Brady jersey sales:

    1. Nike, the NFL’s uniform supplier, has gone to a new tailoring this year, and thus the jersey has changed ever so slightly; some people want to keep it current.

    2. Many may be buying jerseys with Super Bowl 51 or World Champions patches on them, making them unique collectables to some.

    3. There are a myriad of alternate jersey styles available(not just on-field ones), and they continue to be released; these totals are included in the overall number.
