Packers excuse some veteran players from minicamp again this year

Getty Images

When the time for mandatory minicamp rolled around last year, Packers coach Mike McCarthy excused all players with five or more years of experience from those practices.

With the Packers set to play in the Hall of Fame Game last year, McCarthy cited the longer than usual training camp as the reason why the veterans wouldn’t be on the field. The Packers aren’t scheduled to play a fifth preseason game this year (they never actually played in it last year), but McCarthy said Monday that he is handling minicamp the same way.

“We had a practice [last Friday] with all the players under six years,” McCarthy said on ESPN 540 Milwaukee. “To me, Friday and these three practices in front of us are the most important practices of the offseason because the reps go up for everybody. You look for those first-, second-, third-, fourth-, fifth-year [players], you look for guys to step up and take a little bit of a leadership role on the practice field. I think this is the second or third year we’ve done this, and I feel like we’ve gotten a lot of out of it. I’m looking forward to these three practices.”

Sixteen Packers will be excused this week, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver Jordy Nelson, linebacker Clay Matthews and safety Morgan Burnett. Younger players will get increased snaps and cornerback Kevin King, the team’s top pick in April, will get his first work since rookie minicamp as the NFL bars him and other incoming rookies from practicing until their schools are out of session.

Great move considering the Falcons embarrassed the heck out of those veterans on nations television.

Do they need more time to recover from that beating?

Those 16 players are on their way to celebrate (buffet style) with eddie lacy. Weight goal met!

Good way to show the young guys how to work. Last place is on the horizon.

This sends the message that practice isn’t important for some players.

It’s how the Packers build one of the deepest rosters every year.

  7. cheeseisfattening says: Jun 12, 2017 4:57 PM

It looks like it will be yet another slow start for the Packers this year. Followed again by excuses that early season games do not count as much since the team has not yet had a chance to gel.

This title should be “Packer’s excuses. Some veteran players missing from minicamp again this year.”

Clay Matthews should be fighting for his starting job as far as I’m concerned…if not his job period

Excuses for what?? You Viking fans don’t make any sense. We are not the team that finished with an 8-8 record and third in the division. You know that right?

  10. karras71 says: Jun 12, 2017 5:50 PM

Viking fans, you need to stop embarrassing yourselves.
Your team is just not very good.
Your roster is a joke and your coach has absolutely no respect in his own locker room.
In fact, you should seriously be concerned about losing ground to the Bears.
The NFC North is going to come down to the Lions and Packers. Again.
Green Bay has been the top dog in our division for quite some time, but with numerous road games to end their season, they will have a tough time down the stretch.
A lot will depend on how their pass defense rebounds from last year.
This team is very good, but not infallible.
But seriously, give it a rest, the Packers and Lions have enough talent on their rosters to lap the Vikings two times over.

If you’re still trying to be a true “draft & develop” team in the era of the new CBA, which seriously restricts spring and early summer practices, this is what you have to resort too in order to get the young guys enough reps. I’m sure the Packer veterans appreciate it and it might even be a perk to attract future veteran free agents to sign with the Packers in the future.

  13. beerbratscheese says: Jun 12, 2017 10:12 PM

Fans of other teams may claim McCarthy is clueless in how he runs the team, but that just shows how clueless they are. You don’t make the playoffs eight years in a row by accident. And it takes a heck of a lot more than a franchise QB as well.

No Packers fan will say McCarthy is the best coach in the league, but he is, without doubt, much closer to the top of the list than the bottom.

No fans talk a bigger game than Vikings’ fans. It’s almost as if they don’t realize how bad they embarrass themselves. Least knowledgeable fans in the NFL.

And yet, somehow, the Packers continue to own the Vikings, going 12-3 against them this decade. That has an annual ring to it, wouldn’t you agree? They must be doing something right. Either that, or things must be really bad in Minnesota. It’s one or the other.

Stellar, like most packer fans, love to live in the past. If you live in the present, the Vikings and Packers have split their past 4 games
and have split the Division Championship the past two seasons. With no offseason improvement on defense by GB, I expect Detroit to be more of a threat this year for the North crown. The 4-6 start last year by the Pack is the real measure of their team.

Could not agree more. As a Packers fan I am right there saying he is not the best coach in the league but he seems to have the knack for knowing the pulse of his team. It is not an accident that he has his team in position every year. The players he gave time off to are not the one’s that I worry about at all they will be fine and ready to go when camp opens.

Seriously, you think TT picked Kevin King to fix the whole secondary?!
How about Josh Jones with the 61st pick who is a safety that is faster than your WR- Treadwell? The guy has serious stud potential and can hit.

Then we have Randall and Rollins finally coming back healthy after both had injuries that required surgery that slowed them down and killed their play last season. Rollins says it is the first time he has been pain free since an excellent rooking season. Randall couldn’t run full speed and had hip surgery. If all four play up to their potential this secondary could be outstanding! Throw in a pro-bowler at Clinton-Dix and a solid and healthy Morgan Burnett and last years woes against the Falcon’s will be forgotten.

King wasn’t at OTAs because of an NFL rule, not the Packers. Same reason why Christian McCaffrey wasn’t at OTAs

No. You’re not getting it. You’re clueless to what he meant. He meant, as a Viking fan, you have no right to criticize. If you were a Falcon fan maybe, but only maybe because they embarrassed themselves for eternity last season. I don’t think they feel like bragging too much.

But you? A Viking fan? What on earth makes you believe you’ve earned any right whatsoever to criticize the Packers?

Viking fans are all hat…..no cattle. And clueless on top of it.

Typical Packer fan thinking rights are earned based on the success of the football team that you cheer for.
