Sean Payton notices “a certain temperament” to Adrian Peterson’s running style

AP

In five weeks and four days, running back Adrian Peterson will return to Minnesota as a member of the Saints. And the jury is out on how Peterson will look when he’s in the game.

The naysayers say he’s too old and too banged up to be the “he’s loose!” juggernaut he once was. The glass-half-full crowd believes Adrian will still be Adrian.

So far, the optimists may be onto something. Apart from the consistent praise of Peterson from teammates, his new coach has seen the same Peterson that the rest of us have for the last decade.

“The reps he is taking . . . have been impressive,” Payton told reporters on Thursday. “Today was a pretty physical day. We did not tackle to the ground, but there certainly is a temperament to his style. You feel it.”

There’s a chance Vikings defenders will be feeling it too on the first night of the regular season. The counter, of course, is that the Vikings coach staff knows Peterson well enough to implement and execute a plan for stopping him.

However it plays out, Peterson’s debut as a member of the Saints will be one of the most intriguing games of Week One, which is pretty good given that the game otherwise entails a pair of non-playoff teams from 2016.

  1. The Vikings might miss Peterson on the field, but at least they have a new domestic abuser to replace their old domestic abuser as face-of-the-franchise.

  2. It will be awesome when Cook gets more yards than Peterson.

My question is- will Breez throw his certain-temperment-hissy-fits when he’s being sacked all evening long?

  3. As a Vikings fan I fully expect AP to get a 100 yards game. He will be featured and get a lot of touches. Only way AP won’t get his yards is if the Saints have a worse offensive line than the one he played for last year. I hope the Vikings line is better this year for Cook and company. Only reason AP is playing for the Saints is because he got way too expensive.

I’ll cheer for him after after he has a horrible week 1 game… I would love to see the vikes shut him down

  5. Adrian it was a great ride in Minnesota. As a lifelong Viking fan we appreciate your accomplishments on the field. With that said I would take Robert Smith over you any day of the week. You may fall fourth on my list of Vikings in my lifetime Moss, Carter, Smith and then AP. As a pure RB you were the best but your failure to pass block and catch the ball out of the backfield crippled our offense.

Brees is the best QB you will play with since the lone season of Brett Farve and that will probably hide some of your weaknesses but regardless we all still know they exist. Best of luck going forward and I look forward to the day ahead when we can add you to the Ring!!! SKOL4LIFE!!!!
