Bengals trade Marquis Flowers to Patriots for seventh-round pick

Getty Images

With four days to go before final roster cuts, the Bengals and Patriots have made a move.

Cincinnati sent linebacker Marquis Flowers to the Patriots for a seventh-round draft pick, the Enquirer reports.

The move likely means the Bengals didn’t plan to keep Flowers on their 53-man roster, and that the Patriots liked him and thought some other team would claim him on waivers before they could get him. As the defending champions, the Patriots are last in the waiver claim order, so they can only get a waived player if no other team wants him.

Flowers hasn’t done much on defense but is a solid special teams player, and Patriots coach Bill Belichick tends to like low-cost players who can help on special teams. Flowers is due a $690,000 salary on the final year of his rookie contract.

Trading away depth at linebacker looks risky for the Bengals right now, given that Vontaze Burfict is facing a potential five-game suspension. But undrafted rookie Hardy Nickerson Jr. has played well enough that he looks likely to make the team, and so the Bengals felt they could send Flowers to a team that’s willing to give something up for him.

  1. Some may wonder why but Belichick’s probably hoping Flowers can be enough of a regular special teamer so that Amendola and Slater can do more rotation at slot in Edelman’s absence. A typically smart Belichickian trade – potentially big upside (Edelman damage-control) for a very low risk/pick-cost.

  2. This could be an Akeem Ayers/Johnathan Casillas move, or it could end up like Jon Bostic equating to nothing. Why not? Its the VALUE that makes it count. Get in here, do your job, help us win games.

  3. Something tells me their scouting has more than just a STS player in mind for this guy.

Funny how Cincy was about to cut him, but the Pats like his skills.

    lol

Who do you trust in this equation? Cincy scouts or Pats scouts and BB?

    Edge rusher????

They need another edge rusher, who knows besides Bill?

No, they don’t. Read Matt Chatham’s Twitter. I’ve been trying to explain this since Nink retired and Rivers (who was never going to add much as a rookie) went down.

    Hightower is now Nink

    Guy is now Sheard

    Flowers/Wise = Chris Long’s role

    Butler = Ealy

Go watch Butler’s tape from the preseason games. He’s rangy, athletic and has good motor with good moves. Can play DT and DE like Flowers.

  5. .
Like Barkevious Mingo, Flowers is a bit of a freak. He’s 6’3″ and 250 lbs now. However, coming out of school he weighed 230 and ran a 4.5/40.

Either he can fill a spot on core special teams, or perhaps Belichick could find a role for him as a hybrid safety/linebacker. They’re all the rage these days.
    .

  6. Could be a key special teams player that allows Brandon Bolden to be released…. He’s also a LB so it adds to his value whereas the RB position is well stocked & Bolden is more expendable…..
Don’t see the Pats giving up a seventh round pick next year & not keeping him this year….
    Go Pats!!!

    Yeah.

Assuming this means Grissom is on the outs and they see things with Flowers where they can coach him up and possibly move him around as a Rover/Big Nickel down the road.

Usually when BB selects some unknown/lesser known to trade for, it works out pretty well.

Smells like they want to add more speed to LB.

  8. “Belichick’s probably hoping Flowers can be enough of a regular special teamer so that Amendola and Slater can do more rotation at slot in Edelman’s absence”

Lolz Slater will not under any circumstances be playing in the slot. He gets about 2 or 3 plays an entire season as a receiver and the handful of times I’ve seen Brady actually throw to him he’s never made a reception. They call Slater a wideout on the roster but he’s virtually never employed in that role.

Who is your coach, Marvin Lewis? Hard to keep up with who is who in terms of which fans are envious.

  10. Bill and Marvin make deals all the time. A seventh round pick won’t be known for years who got the best in this deal.

  11. The Pats get another freakish athlete, with very little time to evaluate him however. At a guess Flowers adds depth for Special Teams but also linebacker, particularly if Hightower is used more as an edge.

  12. Great move by Bengals, Duke Tobin strikes again with a draft pick for a guy getting cut. So much talent on the Bengals roster I would be very surprised if this is their last move, maybe Lafell. Then again, talent is not the problem in Cincy, Marvin Lewis very much is the problem.

  14. Be interesting to see where Bill uses him Thursday against the Giants.

    We know special teams…

But IMO Bill has other ideas.

Hightower has been taking reps in practice as an edge rusher (prior to them getting Flowers). I think Bill would prefer to play Hightower inside. If Flowers is as fast as they say, maybe he will be tried on the edge.

Its hard to second guess Bill, but he has more in mind than just special teams IMO.

Duke Tobin “strikes again”? You lost both starrting WRS last year at the same time because yu forgot to budget for even ONE Of them to keep, and he failed to deal one of them off to get some kind of ROI, and haven’t won a playoff game, since when? 1990?

Burfict is suspended again, you lost Burkhead to the Pats who will drive people crazy with jealousy, and your average QB is paid 20 mil per.

    Strikes again, alright.

You might win the division, but your team is going nowhere in general.

  16. So, if the Patriots play the Steelers in the playoffs this year, will he tweet “time to witness mass murder” again.

    ________________

A Super Bowl contending team didn’t.
Beyond that obviously Cincy was going to cut him. The Pats having an interest and being last in line on waivers claiming meant they got something for him even if it will only end up being the last pick of the 7th round, something is always better than nothing.

  22. “if the Patriots play the Steelers in the playoffs this year, will he tweet “time to witness mass murder” again.”

Nope. One of the first things he’ll be told after he walks into Gillette Stadium will be the Pats social media policy. Which is basically shut up and don’t say anything but the most bland things imaginable.

“Why would any super bowl contending team trade players to the Patriots?”

They shouldn’t but I don’t think anyone in their wildest dreams consider the Bungles a “Super Bowl contending team”.

No, we don’t remember that at all. We do remember when a cheating commissioner being caught lying in a federal court more than once, however. The only commissioner in sports history to be caught lying in a federal court.

    ===

They dropped 8 spots in the draft and won the Superbowl, how did it work for you?

Probably you could have gotten the same guy if you didn’t move up 8 spots.
Probably the Pats got the same guy that they could have picked 8 spots higher.

    See how that works?

It’s tough being champs, and last in the waiver priority, but that’s a good problem to have. #PatriotsProblems

NE did not trade a 2nd rd pick. They swapped a late 2nd rder for an early 3rd rder. They moved back 8 spots in the draft.

NE has won 2 SBs in the last 3 years by continuing to look under every rock and set records, making owners and fans jealous, and working with the commissioner to cheat the Pats.

So, I am pretty sure the Pats know what they’re doing as they look to nail down yet another dynasty, their second pure dynasty formed in the cap era where a good, solid parity is supposed to reign.

But, you enjoy the view, little guy.

  30. So now now the Patriots have two linebackers named Flowers?
So if they both rush the QB on a play are the announcers going to say “awwww look, Belichick sent him a bunch of flowers”
If they have a rushing package that involves both will that atart getting referred to as a bouquet?

If 11 AFC Championship games, 7 Super Bowl appearances, and 5 Super Bowl wins in 16 seasons is not a dynasty, it is certainly the closest thing to a dynasty any of us have ever seen and likely will ever see in the NFL salary cap era.

And, for all we Pats fans know, the best may be yet to come, because our next Super Bowl win is always the best.

  36. For the people who keep mentioning how did Kony Ealy work out for you.

First, there aren’t a lot of openings on a returningsuper bowl winning team.

Second, your team is about to cut down from 90 to 53 players. How did those 27 players you are about to cut work out for you? Same as Kong Ealy I presume.

  37. So they acquired a sixth round player who was probably going to get get cut anyway for seventh round pick? And Pat fans are really calling Belichick a genius?

Not really, those 27 players that are being cut did not come in by giving up a 2nd rd pick. Most are un-drafted FA’s or late rd draft picks.

Sorry, I mean 37 players. I somehow missed that the last time. For some reason math is not the strongest suit of Pat’s fans. I also had to correct another Pats fan earlier that moving from the 64th pick in the 2nd rd to the 72nd pick in the 3rd rd is moving down 8 positions, he put 12. Of course he also believes that trading a 2nd rd pick for a 3rd rd pick means that the Pat’s didn’t lose a 2nd rd pick….not sure how he came up with that logic either.

New Englanders are great at math, its just that where the Patriots are concerned its easier since #1 is the only number they have to deal with.
