Tom Benson issues statement which says he values everything

With players stomping on the tube last weekend, owners are working very carefully to put the toothpaste back in this week, so they can continue to sell toothpaste.

After the Saints players announced they were going to kneel before them anthem and stand for the song to show #unity, Saints owner Tom Benson put out another statement today to try to cover all his bases.

The statement began with the usual decree that he loves the military and the flag, before hitting the realization that this is a tricky issue for teams to navigate.

“One of the things I am most proud of is my military service,” the statement read. “And, there are few things that are more important to me than the honor that I feel we must bestow upon our military men and women- the honor we must show our flag- and standing at attention for our flag and our national anthem is a powerful symbol we must respect.

“As an owner in the NFL and NBA for years, I have met many players, coaches and staff from seemingly every background possible. But as this week has demonstrated, there are very sensitive, difficult and emotional matters affecting this country. Now more than ever we must find solutions that unite and don’t divide us.

“Today, Drew Brees and team leadership stated that our team will stand for the national anthem. Regarding the issues of social injustice, I stand ready to offer our organizations, our players, and our community meaningful support and resources to move from protest to solution.

“We have spoken to our state leadership in Governor Jon Bel Edwards — he is also ready to do what he can with us to affect positive change.

“With my heart, I respect everyone’s very honest and sincere opinions that I have heard personally on this subject all week. We are committed to work with our players and our community to be unified to create positive change for all citizens.

“Along the way, when presented the opportunity – I offer that we all thank a military man or woman and honor our flag and anthem- it is that freedom that is allowing us this discussion today. We should and must use this most powerful of platforms to help heal.”

In addition to the usual fan backlash after 10 Saints players sat last week, the Saints have faced some political pressure back home, which leads teams to go out of their way to make sure everyone feels good about paying for and consuming their product.

  1. Translation: I told them to stand respectfully during the presentation or else.

Last weekend the owners had no idea what to do. Ratings dropped, people were pissed, the damage to the bottom line was obvious. The owners adopted the same rule we who have a job live by: Don’t anger the customers.

  2. Don’t dis’ Dixie Beer. It has a long history in Louisiana until it was moved to Wisconsin after Hurricane Katrina. Benson bought it to move it back to New Orleans where it belongs.

  3. Life long Saints fan, 12 year tix holder….. after 2005 AND “K”, didn’t care for the man, From 2006 forward I changed my opinion. This man has donated tons of money for numerous causes. Is an advocate for the needy and forgotten. Hell there’s a statue of the man at the dome. Thank you Mr. Benson.

  4. orwellian times…stand for the flag & be deemed racist…knee & be deemed traitorous…america could only be taken out from within…surprised at how easy it’s been..

  5. You know the leftists are destroying our country when an owner has to make an announcement that his team will respect the national anthem.

  6. It’s so convoluted that kneeling or locking arms can mean anything you want it to. The “look at me” shock value is fading away and it’s nothing more than the next ice bucket challenge.

  7. A bunch of crybabies protesting over a false narrative. They make it seem like every single black person is mistreated by police, but in reality, it’s only bad people that get treated with force by police officers. Of course, there are a few instances where a minority is treated unfairly, but mostly, they took a couple news stories, that were falsely reported on, and spun those to make it look like every black person is mistreated.

The leftist are definitely giving it their all to tank this great nation.

  8. So was it the police offers that created the crime infested neighborhoods around New Orleans? I’m just wondering how much blame we can pin on them to fit the narrative being spewed.

  9. The owners are getting really nervous. I’m sure they have read and seen the backlash from the fans over last weekend, and are realizing that if it continues it will seriously hurt their bottom dollar. Unfortunately for them most fans can care less if the players from most teams will be standing this weekend. Damage done! I can’t wait for the next team to ask for public funding for their new stadium, that’s when they’ll se the real damage done.
