Report: Jerry Jones hires David Boies to fight Goodell extension

Well, now we know why Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is no longer part of the Compensation Committee.

According to Ken Belson of the New York Times, Jones has hired lawyer David Boies in connection with Jones’ ongoing push against Goodell’s contract extension. Per the report, Jones told the other members of the Compensation Committee last week that he had retained Boies, a high-profiled and accomplished attorney.

Jones has threatened to file suit over the issue. No lawsuit has been filed yet, however.

According to Belson, the Compensation Committee decided to revoke Jones’ ad hoc status as a member of the six-owner group after he disclosed his plans last week. PFT first reported on Tuesday evening that Jones no longer is a member of the Compensation Committee, in any capacity. The reasons for his departure weren’t known at the time.

The development comes at a team when resentment of Jones has grown among owners. Many resent his use of the phrases “ranking owner” and “senior ranking owner” at last month’s league meeting, and he has created frustration and acrimony via repeated efforts to hijack discussions among owners. If he actually sues his business partners over Goodell’s contract, Jones could take on full-blown Al Davis pariah-style status.

  1. I’d say that Roger has wore out his welcome when he let the tail wag the dog, who owns these teams again ?? Billionaires who pay millions for employees to perform. If any normal employee told their boss I’m going to do what I want, they’d get fired. The employees telling the owners we do what we want is disrespectful.

I for one don’t tune in to watch millionaires protest, so why should you ??

  2. My, how things have changed in a year’s time. Last year, Goodell was “the man” for making Brady serve a 4-game suspension. Now Jerry wants him gone because its HIS guy in trouble. What a hypocrite.

  3. Tread lightly Jerry. Not saying Goodell has all the power, but it would not surprise me if suddenly more penalties are called against the Cowboys.

  4. Not a fan of Goodell…but Jones is now and has always been a selfish “me only” owner….

If the founding owners felt like him the league would not exist…

If all the current owners felt like Gerry half the teams wouldn’t exist…which might actually be a good thing..

  5. Not sure Jerrah has enough to pull this off, but whatever gets rid of Goodell would be fine with me.

  6. I’m reminded of how Jerry Jones was so excited and supported of Goodell when Brady was suspended for four games because his footballs naturally lost a tiny measurable bit air in the cold weather.

    It’s called “Karma” and it’s pronounced /ha ha ha/

Other NFL teams are next, just wait and see.

Finally. Someone with cohones to take on this hack commisioner!!

    ———–

yeh, like the cajones he displayed when Brady was railroaded…

  8. Jerry Jones constantly comes off like a sleazy bookie trying to cook up his next scheme. The guy is really a POS, whether you support an Goodell extension or not.

  9. Jerry Jones is absolutely ridiculous. I dislike Goodell just as much as the next guy but if it weren’t for the Zeke suspension would Jerry be doing this? not a chance. He was just heaping praise on Goodell for suspending Brady. Go away and let Stephen run the team.

  10. Jerruha protecting his woman beater player, nice. Just don’t be accused of having a slightly deflated football, that may or may not be because of the weather. You will lose his support if that happens.

  11. The Brady suspension is only part of the ridiculous and petty behavior of the leagues most acrimonious and polarizing owner. The publicity he got over the stadium along with the long awaited legitimacy of his team in the standings the past two years has set off the button in his brain that told him he is the best and most important owner in the league. Unfortunately as he ages and becomes more and more a pest his son will step in and take the reigns of this storied franchise….once that happens fans of the remainder of the NFC can go back to hating the Cowboys for all the “right” reasons and that’s what transpires on the field and not in the owners box.

  12. If Article VIII of the NFL’s Constitution and Bylaws was taken seriously, Goodell would have been gone years ago.

“8.1 The League shall select and employ a person of unquestioned integrity to serve as Commissioner of the League…”

Not sure how a duplicitous liar like Goodell meets that standard.

Boies? isn’t he Weinstein’s hatchet man lawyer?

if so, this could get VERY dirty, quickly

    ==========================

Yes. He was just fired by the NYTimes after helping Weinstein by hiring investigators to dig up dirt on Times reporters. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Times try to get him disbarred.

“We never contemplated that the law firm would contract with an intelligence firm to conduct a secret spying operation aimed at our reporting and our reporters,” The Times said in a statement. “Such an operation is reprehensible.”

  14. Now they are going to start eating their own.

I think this is all about $$$$$, that’s all the owners care about. And for once Rogers stupidity is going to cost them big bucks.

  15. “Many resent his use of the phrases “ranking owner” and “senior ranking owner” at last month’s league meeting.”

You know, many might resent this but it’s true. Let’s look at the recent things Jerry wanted.

    Rams in LA : Happened
    Raiders in Vegas : Happened
Bill Polian as GM : TBD

  16. “Organization full of clowns ran by a clown… Sucks to be a Cowboys fan…”

I almost took this statement seriously enough to be offended until I saw it was from a Cardinals fan

  17. the NFL really misses a young Al Davis, goodell would of been gone long ago.

remember people, Goodell is Krafts boy, he is the one who pushed for him in the first place.

  18. This guy is the biggest hypocrite ever. No issues with the Saints getting screwed. Told Kraft and Brady to take their medicine with no proof anything was done. Now we have his player beating up women (with photos), exposing a woman’s breasts (with video), beating a DJ (with video) and he’s all Goodell must go??? Hey Jerry, take your medicine.

  19. Maybe Mr Jones ought to read the recent The New Yorker piece by Ronan Farrow (“Harvey Weinstein’s Army of Spies”) that also regards Mr Boies. Though I suppose he really doesn’t care about optics.

  20. Idiot slimeball owner vs. idiot slimeball commissioner. Don’t really see anyone to cheer for here.

  21. Jones is trying to get rid of Goodell for selfish and vindictive reasons. But at this point I won’t quibble. As long as he’s gone I’m good. Worse Commisioner ever. And stop pointing at how much money Goodell supposedly made the owners. At a time when pro sports is one of the few things worth watching live on TV anymore he gets no credit. Unless you somehow think all the commissioners in big time college football conferences are the reason for their exponential growth.

This is like my cousin who started investing in stocks at the bottom of the crash in 2009 and now thinks he’s some type of genius stock picker because of his returns.

  22. Roger is far from perfect and there are legitimate gripes about his job performance. However, Jerry Jones’ behavior is beginning to remind me of Donald Trump when he was an owner in the USFL. If he’s not reigned in, the NFL will continue to lose its popularity and eventually go bankrupt. I have two suggestions that could help the NFL move on – Goodell’s resignation and Jones passing the team to his son.

Pretty soon the anthem respecters will be Jones only allies. They are a perfect match?

    ———————
What is an “anthem respecter”. And why will they only have Jones?

  24. I would just caution the posters here. Trump has JJ ear and could end entertaining a vacant position as Commissioner, since he’s doing such a fantastic job of making HIM Great Again……Anyone who come next as NFL Commissioner would be a patsy for JJ. Another Sleazy salesman.

  25. @ aldavisisthenfl says:

“Jerry on his best football day in his life could never be Al ……just sayin”…

Well, Jones ALSO has 3 Super Bowl rings as an owner, and in far less time in comparison to Al Davis. Just sayin’…..

A Raider fan on a Cowboy thread – why are you here? Likely it is because you are in agreement with Jones on trying to prevent Goodell from getting his contract extended, which is just about everybody (whether they say it or not) is with Jones on that one.

  26. This is exactly how New England wanted Kraft to react to the witch hunt known as Deflategate.

If Jones can successfully end Goodells reign of incompetence, he may actually save the NFL from the fate famously prophesied by Mark Cuban.

  27. Goodell has made a lot of mistakes. Then he refuses to reason.
His Comp is triple and more than Tagliabue’s ever was. That’s a recipe
    for discussion amoung some owners.
Goodell will survive because of owners like Rooney and Mara.
Both were born into NFL royalty and are not risk takers like
their fathers and grandfathers. They will just go with whatever
    Goodell wants.

    Not all heroes wear capes.

    ——————–

In this case it could be a truss…

  29. The motivation and pettiness on the part of JJ do not matter to me. Simply put, Goodell forgot that the fans are the game along time ago. Fans care about the games, not the continual football related controversies that for several years have overshadowed the games.

Football is Steve Sabol and the husky voice talking over a touchdown run in extra slow motion.

Football is the simplicity yet the final word of Pat Summerall..Montana…Rice…
    Touchdown..Ballgame..and then silence..

It’s the games and the escape and the connection a fan has for their team..

The NFL is not about Goodell..He forgot the fans..He needs to go.

  30. Also same lawyer who represented Al Gore and was used to discredit women who accused Weinstein of sexual abuse. Jerry had a case that deserved better than this swamp dweller.

…..And stop pointing at how much money Goodell supposedly made the owners….

    —————-
I wont, because he didn’t. When they were trying to negotiate the media deal that is the meat of that money the talks were breaking down due to Goodell and his team being incompetent and impossible to work with. They were finally thrown out of the merting room for the balance of the process and Bob Kraft had to step in to close the deal.

  33. “This guy is the biggest hypocrite ever. No issues with the Saints getting screwed. Told Kraft and Brady to take their medicine with no proof anything was done. And what exactly was Jerry suppose to do to save the Saints and Patriots from Goodell? Funny the same people who think Jerry should’ve spoke up are also the same ones wanting him to shut up.

  34. Goodell has so mismanaged the league, its headed for all out collapse in this decade, get him out of there if he can’t control it.

    ***************************************
Lets not forget the most important impact Jerry had on the league….back in the 90’s he refused to accept the rubber stamped CBS and NBC television right contracts and brought in Fox to compete…..this created BILLIONS for each franchise. He came in and changed how each franchise did business in this league, even suing the league to allow Pepsi to be an in-stadium sponsor and won. This guy knows how to make money, has done so to advantage of every owner in the league.

  37. “Football is the simplicity yet the final word of Pat Summerall..Montana…Rice…
    Touchdown..Ballgame..and then silence..”
    ________________

Totally read that part in Summerall’s voice. The sound of him and Madden doing games together reminds me of childhood

  38. Goodell doesn’t have that many jobs to do. One of them is enforcing rules the owners vote and agree upon. Jones was all well and good with Brady getting boned, but now it’s his boy and he’s upset. Jones is the biggest blowhard in the league.

Another of Goddell’s jobs is increasing league revenue, which he has in spades. The league is FAR more economically successful since taking the job. The leagues ratings could be literally cut in half and he’d still be ahead.

To be fair Goodell has been excellent when it comes to expanding. He sucks at personnel, but I think that’s more due to the NFLPA’s agreement to a horrible CBA.

  39. Hardy, Zeke – no woman beater Jones will not hire and protect. Can anyone explian how/why Jones got into thr HOF?

  40. What a freaking idiot! He hired the same lawyer Weinstein just hired, who is already paying investigators to try to dig up dirt on the accusers. Yeah, THAT’S a good fit for the NFL’s desire to deal with domestic violence and sexual harassment.

  41. This is a tough one… I’m not sure who I want to see get B* slapped to the ground more… Jerry Jones or Roger Goodell. I guess I’m OK with either outcome as long as someone gets punched in the gonads

  42. Once, a long time ago, you would settle down on a Sunday afternoon to watch football and take your mind off of business and politics and idiots fighting for power. That’s how badly these guys have hurt the game.

  43. What grounds/standing would he have to file suit? I’m fairly certain the procedures for hiring a commissioner are spelled out somewhere and Jones, or at a minimum the majority of owners signed off on them. I’m not saying Goodell has been great. He’s botched discipline in almost every way imaginable but this looks like an ego trip by JJ because HIS star got in trouble.

  44. @Big Green Bird says – What is an “anthem respecter?”

Someone who thinks that the anthem is more important than the ideals it represents. Someone who believes that respect for the anthem is more important than respect for human beings.

  45. “Once, a long time ago, you would settle down on a Sunday afternoon to watch football and take your mind off of business and politics and idiots fighting over power”.

You mean like the 60s, when the NFL and ALF were in a much publicized, multi-year battle over the business and power of control of pro football? Or when Al Davis interjected politics talking about the Iranian hostages in 1980? Or the battle between the NFL and the USFL?

Don’t suffer from recency bias. Business and politics have always been intertwined with pro football.

  46. When an unethical and unprofessional owner goes after an unethical and unprofessional league head, you know there is something up.

I guess Jerruh doesn’t like when one of his prized domestic violence administrators gets picked on.

  47. A “high-profiled and accomplished attorney”? We’re talking about the loser lawyer who showed before the Supreme Court to argue for the plaintiff in Gore v Bush, wearing a suit and sneakers. He lost that case embarrassingly, because everyone with any sense of fashion and decorum knows that you do not wear sneakers with a suit, especially in front of the highest court in the land. You don’t dress like that at a dinner party and hope to find a date.

  48. What, exactly, would be be suing for? I’m not sure what action the NFL or fellow owners have taken against Jones that would warrant a lawsuit. He gets one vote just like every other owner. If a majority wants Goodell’s contract extended, then it will be. You can’t sue people just because you don’t get your way!

  49. This comments section is apparently filled with people who no longer watch football because they’re in protest mode, but spend a lot of time on here commenting about it…

Jones isn’t some hero. He’s throwing a tantrum. Why do you think he’s going against every other owner? Jones is never the smartest owner in the room.

So what’s wrong with another opinion? NFL’s kinda like a train wreck, you want to turn away, you just can’t..

Don’t think any of us know the mind of Jerry Jones. None of these billionaire owners are idiots. Only time will tell how many owners he’s got with him and whether it’s a “tantrum” or a well thought out plan. I’m bettin it’s not just a tantrum..
