Ronald Darby: Accusations against Jameis Winston are “just not true”

Nearly five years ago, Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby witnessed an encounter that resulted in Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston being accused of rape, when they were teammates at Florida State. Darby also witnessed the events from nearly two years ago that resulted in Winston being accused of groping an Uber driver.

“I felt the need to come forward and clarify some inaccurate accounts of the evening of March 13, 2016 when myself, a friend and Jameis Winston took an Uber ride in Arizona,” Darby said in a statement issued to Jay Glazer of FOX. “There were three of us in the car, not just one as has been reported. Myself and Jameis were in the backseat. I am confident that nothing inappropriate in nature happened in the car that evening and Jameis did not have any physical contact with the Uber driver. The accusations are just not true.”

The Uber driver claims that Winston was in the front seat. Uber deactivated Winston’s account, since Winston’s account was the one that was used to order the ride.

“I believe the driver was confused as to the number of passengers in the car and who was sitting next to her,” Winston’s Friday statement declared. “The accusation is false, and given the nature of the allegation and increased awareness and consideration of these types of matters, I am addressing this false report immediately. At the time of the alleged incident, I denied the allegations to Uber, yet they still decided to suspend my account.”

The NFL has confirmed that the matter is under review. Winston has not been charged with any crime or sued by the driver.

  1. Money grab for the Uber driver is all this is. Fight back against her AND UBER!!!! Now JW should sue UBER for millions to prove a point.
Shame in this world today the accuser can make claims with no real merit and the accused suffers greatly.

  2. If there were three passengers, and Darby and Winston are two, who is the other? They know, so be forthcoming about it. Otherwise at this point, they are complicit when they now know that a sexual assault took place.

  3. If true, this is great for Winston. However, if he did not report the incident to his organization…something very significant given his past, the risk and trust the Bucs placed in him ahead of drafting him, and the fact this was his first offseason…and he still managed to get himself into a situation like this and not get out of it on the spot…is not good.

  4. the real scandal here is that a eagles player was sharing a ride with a bucs qb. call me old fashion but i miss the days when nfl players were enemys on and off the field. seems like todays guys are just wanna be buddy buddy with each other. nfl rivalrys should be like blood feuds. instead of sharing ubers guys should be proclaiming how their squad is uber alles.

Well seeing that this incident supposedly took place in 2016 and Darby was recently traded to the Eagles in training camp this year. That would means that Ronald Darby was playing for the Buffalo Bills when the incident again supposedly took place.

  6. roger doesnt care if you are innocent or not. (see Zeke) SIX games suspension a coming! Bank on it!
Zekes accuser was a PROVEN gold diggn LIAR as well.
One Man should not have this MUCH power! No proof? No evidence? No problem, 6 Games! CUZ IM THE ROG!

  7. There has to be a way to verify these allegations. Nobody should be able to come forward 2 years (or 40 years) later and claim to have been violated. Even in this changing social climate….you have to vet both the Accuser and the Accused.

A Lie Detector Test for both sides is not out of the question.

  8. I would expect those who frequently cite “multiple instances of cheating” to continue on that path in their assessment of JWs previous instances of encounters with the law.

What was that about smoke & fire again?

  9. Here we go again. This is why it’s so hard to get a guilty verdict in real cases of sexual assault. These false allegations by women, do so much harm to other women. It so selfish. This person is obviously desperate for money. Why else would they be driving Uber at 2:00 am? Unless there are serious consequences for false allegations, this won’t change, and real sexual predators will continue to go free. Women should be furious about this.

Oh, his teammate said it didn’t happen? Well then, case closed!

Darby plays for the Eagles. Winston plays for the Bucs. Different teams.

  11. Something stinks with this. The Uber driver comes out with the accusations 18 months later? On the other hand Uber had a report of this – lets see it. What was reported?
Way too many parts of this story are unknown for anyone to make a “he definitely did it” or “no way, it’s a money grab.”

  12. I’m sure the third person will also cooperate with any investigation by either the league or by the police.

If you believe that Darby is a liar, you also therefore believe that he’d actively try to cover up a rape and a sexual assault. Do you really know that much about the guy to take such an extreme view on him?

  13. I really question ANY accusation that Is claimed a YEAR and HALF later. Sorry…but that’s just too long in my book. If it did happen;she should have gone to the police and filed a official complaint.

  14. Maybe Uber and Lyft should require cameras in their drivers’ vehicles moving forward. Nothing will come about of this he said-she said incident. If there is evidence of him being responsible for doing this he should be kicked out of the league. If it’s proven she’s making this up, she should be jailed.

  15. THIs is a problem. The accuser says she was ALONE with Winston. Now this is proven false as there were 4 people in the car.

Will he public ridicule the accuser? Of course not. She should be locked up.

  16. Darby plays for the Eagles. Winston plays for the Bucs. Different teams.

They were teammates ar FSU. College teammates have even stronger bonds… went through the crab leg incident together.

  17. How many unfounded allegations does that make Now? I’ve lost count? Why would all those people say the same kind of stuff? And don’t forget, the NFL considers a payoff, whether court ordered or not, as though crime never committed. Oh wait, Maybe that was for Colts owner only?

  18. It’s really sad poor Jameis is apparently going to have mean women accusing him of things he definitely didn’t do for the rest of his life. Weird he in particular gets singled out like this so often. 😦

Well it sure wasn’t for Greg Hardy.

  20. I don’t know the truth of this particular matter, but some of the people in this thread show exactly why there is such a huge problem in this country and why people who are harassed don’t want to come forward in the first place. So far as I know, the driver isn’t suing anyone for money. She said that she reported it to Uber but not the police because she was scared to come forward. The NFL is investigating now after learning of the alleged incident, hence the timing.

It’s frankly disgusting to see people arguing that the driver is in it for money or should go to jail. Regardless of the facts here, you’re part of the problem.

  21. With every bit of info that comes out that contributes to pointing to innocence in this case, the future NFL suspension gets worse. That’s the way it works in Goodell’s kangaroo court, right?

  22. This just makes me very concerned about the character of the Darby (as an Eagles fan). Winston is clearly a POS, and Darby is with him at the worst times and places, if nothing else.

  23. Seeing has how this happened a couple years ago and the driver didn’t go to police back then I doubt she is seeking a pay day and has anybody seen anything to prove it’s her who told media about it now? My question would be who leaked this story to the media and were the details accurate? The driver I’m sure was well aware of the number of passengers but is the, for lack of a better word, whistle blower aware of the number of passengers? Somebody may be seeking money for this story but that doesn’t mean it’s the uber driver.

She was a proven gold digger? Proven by whom?

What about the woman who was standing there while Elliott pulled down her top in public?

Eliiott needs to learn to keep his hands off of non-consenting women.

  25. “the real scandal here is that a eagles player was sharing a ride with a bucs qb. call me old fashion but i miss the days when nfl players were enemys on and off the field”

I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but this incident happened long before Ronald Darby was a member of the Eagles. Aside from that, why should they be “enemies” off the field? The way things go in the NFL these days, they could be teammates next year.

  26. No one yet knows if Winston did this or not,but for a guy who always claims innocence, his name is attached to a lot of unsavory sexual incidents. I guess we will have to wait and see,as it will probably be dragged out for months to come.

    ______________

The woman at the parade gave her consent when she motioned for Zeke to do it and solidified her consent when she left with him.

  28. The girl at Florida State who said Winston raped her reported the rape immediately after the encounter and before she knew who he was. And his school paid her almost a million dollars to settle. So it’s obvious to me he is a rapist. Therefore, I have no reason to not believe this Uber driver.

  29. God r u people this ignorant or just dumb? She made the report the day it happened. She didnt come forward 18 months later like u guys r claiming. She isnt suing him so it isnt a money grab.

But hey make up some more crap so this will fit the same narrative u guys push any time a celeb is accused. We all know u guys want every girl to be seen as a false accuser. Probably bc you want to be able to or have a history of pulling a Winston. AKA abusing vulnerable women without consequence.

So you assume the driver is a liar, and you somehow think it was proven that there were 4 in the car because his buddy said so. There may have been, but you are obviously on the JW bandwagon.

If this was a money grab, this accusation would have been made the following day by the drivers lawyer. The way this came out was probably a leak from an Uber employee 18 months after the fact. Unless Winston was bragging about who he was to the driver… I doubt she knew who he was.

  32. Based on all the evidence, this seems to be….at the least, a case of mistaken identity (3 guys in the car and the driver has no clue who was who) and at the worst, a money grab by a gold digger looking to take advantage of all the recent headlines and make a quick buck or two.

Either way, I doubt there’s a shred of direct evidence against Jameis Winston, who has been a model citizen since being drafted by the Bucs 2.5 years ago!
