PFT’s Week 13 picks

Getty Images

Five weeks left. Ten games back. Five disagreements.

It’s either going to get interesting or get over with soon.

Sooner than that, you can scroll through the PFT picks for Week 13. No byes, 16 games, increasing stakes, and a few teams tanking.

Maybe I should start tanking, too.

Washington at Cowboys

MDS’s take: The Cowboys’ offense has been terrible the last three games, but I think they’ll manage to put just enough points on the board to win a close one at home on Thursday night.

MDS’s pick: Cowboys 14, Washington 13.

Florio’s take: The Cowboys like to talk about all the reasons for hope, but until Ezekiel Elliott returns, there is none.

Florio’s pick: Washington 27, Cowboys 13.

Vikings at Falcons

MDS’s take: This is a big one in the NFC playoff race, where the Falcons are fighting for a wild card berth and the Vikings are fighting for a first-round bye. I like Atlanta to win at home in what should be a very good game.

MDS’s pick: Falcons 23, Vikings 20.

Florio’s take: The Vikings’ offense is averaging more than 30 points per game against the likes of Kirk Cousins, Jared Goff, and Matthew Stafford. But please keep doubting Case Keenum.

Florio’s pick: Vikings 30, Falcons 27.

Texans at Titans

MDS’s take: The Texans with Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt would be the best team in the AFC South, but with those injuries, the Titans are the best team in the AFC South.

MDS’s pick: Titans 27, Texans 20.

Florio’s take: The Titans have come a long way since the Texans blew them off the field. So have the Texans.

Florio’s pick: Titans 33, Texans 16.

Chiefs at Jets

MDS’s take: The Chiefs’ slide has to end somewhere, doesn’t it? I think it ends on Sunday in New Jersey.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 27, Jets 13.

Florio’s take: Two weeks after scoring nine points in 68 minutes at MetLife Stadium, the Chiefs return to face the better team that plays there.

Florio’s pick: Jets 21, Chiefs 13.

Broncos at Dolphins

MDS’s take: Trevor Siemian is the best of the Broncos’ three quarterbacks, which isn’t saying much, but should be enough to help Denver get a win against a bad Dolphins team.

MDS’s pick: Broncos 21, Dolphins 20.

Florio’s take: It’s the Something’s Gotta Give Bowl. No one’s gotta care.

Florio’s pick: Dolphins 13, Broncos 10.

Colts at Jaguars

MDS’s take: Jacoby Brissett is going to have a rough game against a good Jacksonville pass defense.

MDS’s pick: Jaguars 10, Colts 7.

Florio’s take: If the Jags follow a loss to Blaine Gabbert with a loss to Jacoby Brissett, they don’t deserve to lose in the playoffs, which is pretty much the best outcome they could hope for at that point.

Florio’s pick: Jaguars 27, Colts 17.

Buccaneers at Packers

MDS’s take: Brett Hundley is starting to play better, and while I don’t think the Packers are going to get to the playoffs, I do think they’re going to beat the Buccaneers at home.

MDS’s pick: Packers 21, Buccaneers 14.

Florio’s take: It’s the Bay of Pigs revisited, with every team in the NFC playoff field pulling for the Bucs to ensure that the Packers won’t be able to make a late dive in to the slop with a healthy Aaron Rodgers.

Florio’s pick: Packers 23, Buccaneers 20.

Lions at Ravens

MDS’s take: The Lions have the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, while the Vikings, Packers and Bears have all replaced their quarterbacks this season. If there was ever a year that was set up for Detroit to win the NFC North, this is the year. But it’s not going to happen, and the Lions are going to fall further down in the playoff race when they drop another game on Sunday.

MDS’s pick: Ravens 21, Lions 20.

Florio’s take: The Lions last won in Baltimore 40 years ago, when they beat the Colts. Detroit will need to end that streak if they hope to end their other streak of 26 years without a playoff win.

Florio’s pick: Ravens 20, Lions 17.

Patriots at Bills

MDS’s take: The Patriots are cruising toward another AFC East title, and this is the victory that will put the division out of reach.

MDS’s pick: Patriots 35, Bills 21.

Florio’s take: The Patriots are back in Buffalo, and the only real drama relates to whether anything else with Tom Brady’s name on it will be thrown on the field.

Florio’s pick: Patriots 27, Bills 14.

49ers at Bears

MDS’s take: I think quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is going to show that he’s the real deal in his first start as a 49er. San Francisco will win — which isn’t necessarily a good thing for the franchise, as these two teams are competing for nothing more than a high draft pick.

MDS’s pick: 49ers 27, Bears 17.

Florio’s take: Jimmy G takes on Mitchell T and the loser will be in better position to get him some help in the draft. The 49ers lose by winning.

Florio’s pick: 49ers 17, Bears 13.

Browns at Chargers

MDS’s take: The Chargers started 0-4 and are now surging toward the playoffs. The Browns started 0-4 and are now surging toward 0-16.

MDS’s pick: Chargers 24, Browns 10.

Florio’s take: The Chargers claim they’re the hunters, not the hunted. The Browns are still the gopher that gets trampled by the hunting party.

Florio’s pick: Chargers 30, Browns 13.

Giants at Raiders

MDS’s take: Geno Smith‘s first start as a Giant comes against a weak Raiders pass defense, but I don’t see him doing much anyway.

MDS’s pick: Raiders 24, Giants 13.

Florio’s take: Tanks for everything, Giants.

Florio’s pick: Raiders 30, Giants 9.

Panthers at Saints

MDS’s take: Another big game in the NFC playoff race, and I think the Saints will complete a season sweep of the Panthers.

MDS’s pick: Saints 27, Panthers 21.

Florio’s take: It’s the de facto NFC South championship game, unless the Falcons keep gaining ground. By completing the sweep, the Saints relegate the Panthers to the wild-card chase.

Florio’s pick: Saints 27, Panthers 23.

Rams at Cardinals

MDS’s take: Blaine Gabbert has played surprisingly well as the Cardinals’ quarterback, just not well enough to help a bad team like the Cardinals beat a good team like the Rams.

MDS’s pick: Rams 30, Cardinals 20.

Florio’s take: Bruce Arians can’t chide the Rams about being 8-8 anymore.

Florio’s pick: Rams 27, Cardinals 13.

Eagles at Seahawks

MDS’s take: Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is playing sensational football, but Seattle’s injuries across the roster are too much for them to beat an Eagles team that looks like the favorite to win the NFC.

MDS’s pick: Eagles 28, Seahawks 21.

Florio’s take: Russell Wilson would like to remind everyone that he was winning a Super Bowl while Carson Wentz was playing I-AA football.

Florio’s pick: Seahawks 24, Eagles 23.

Steelers at Bengals

MDS’s take: Cincinnati has played better of late and could fight its way back into the playoff race, but I think Pittsburgh is poised to put together a very good game on Monday night and keep marching toward the top seed in the AFC.

MDS’s pick: Steelers 31, Bengals 17.

Florio’s take: The Steelers continue their run of play-down-to-the-level-of-the-competition prime-time games.

Florio’s pick: Steelers 33, Bengals 31.

  1. The Pats will face the Bills at their most desperate so I expect them to hit Brady quite a bit in this game. However, I think the Bills offense turns the ball over a couple of times thanks to some solid coverage from Gilmore and Butler and gives a short field for Tom Brady passes to Gronk and Cooks as well as the run game to operate. Bills come close, but Patriots get the win 27 to 24. Upset of the week I’m going with Bucs over the Packers 17 to 13. For the lock of the week I have the Dolphins over the Broncos 20 to 14.

  2. The Redskins are winning out and may still not make the playoffs because Kirk Cousins is a fraud who can’t cut it under pressure. The Redskins clearly showed this year they are better than the Eagles Vikings and Saimts but choking Kurt couldn’t come up in the clutch! If one of those three teams somehow makes it to the Superbowl just give the Trophy to New England or Pittsburgh!

  3. I truly think it will be three years in a row that the SB contender comes from the NFCS. The playoff experience will help the QBs of the NFCS in the post season, and may prove to be the difference maker this year.

  4. Vikings have been a surprise this year and playing well. The Falcons showed some much improvement (although it was only the Bucs) but still if they get back to last years production, they can give the Vikings all they can handle… tough to decide… Falcons win at home

Bucs have been winning with Fitz but they seem to forgot they were losing with Winston. Packers were once a game I thought Bucs could win but no longer. Pack wins

Saints are balling and the Panthers not so much… I have more confidence in their QB, HC and home advantage…. Saints WIN

Is it really an upset when they’re the favored team or listed as a pick em? Haven’t seen them as a dog anywhere.

  6. Seeing the Steelers in primetime for three weeks in a row is better than seeing the Dolphins three weeks in a row, like it was before that (and now they’re back for MNF), but still… Can’t the NFL space it out a little better?

Why Florio? Why so much disrespect for the Eagles through the season?

    ———

Because they haven’t faced much adversity and their schedule is one of the easiest in the league. Only tough test all season…Panthers. Also, Winning in Seattle is hard to for any visiting team. The Eagles look like world beaters against bottom teams dealing with injuries…and bottom teams. Seattle is a way more battle tested and experienced team.

  8. Vikings have been a surprise this year and playing well. The Falcons showed some much improvement (although it was only the Bucs) but still if they get back to last years production, they can give the Vikings all they can handle… tough to decide… Falcons win at home

If you look at the acutal metrics, the Vikings matchup better.

They have the 5th best offense and 5th best defense. They have the ability to shutdown a good offense (Rams were the best offense and scored 7 points), and the offense has the ability to do long drives and wear down a defense.

Doesn’t surprise me the Falcons are favored. At home, and a more flashy team, but the Vikings are a solid balanced team. They are viewed as a defense team, but their offense is rolling to. Adam Theilen is 3rd in the league for Yards.

  9. The Redskins are winning out and may still not make the playoffs because Kirk Cousins is a fraud who can’t cut it under pressure.

Coming from a fan that still thinks RGIII is the answer lol

  10. Weird fact: Teams playing against the Texans this season are 1-11 in their next game following playing Houston. The only team to win their next game after playing the Texans is Arizona, who beat the Jaguars last weekend.

Next up: The Ravens, who beat the Texans this past Monday night.

This is clearly important. This means something.

    Ravens 23
    Lions 21

  11. Calling the saints panthers game a de facto division championship is pretty short sighted considering the falcons are one game back and have three games remaining against those two teams.

I dunno The Eagles looked pretty good against Carolina.

I’m not denying that was a good win for them. They didn’t win that game by a huge margin, and that is their only above. 500 team victory. I think the Eagles are good, but how good they actually are is still TBD.

Seattle will be a good test, Rams next week. I think the Saints, and the Vikings are two teams that could challenge them. Both are teams with top defenses and offenses.

  22. It’s the Bay of Pigs revisited, with every team in the NFC playoff field pulling for the Bucs to ensure that the Packers won’t be able to make a late dive in to the slop with a healthy Aaron Rodgers.

    I seriously doubt that.

  23. As a lifelong Cowboys fan I am pretty sure I will be like: “why didn’t they play like this all season?!?!?” OR “WHY have they played this way all season???” …after the game. I am hoping for the former, I am expecting to feel the latter.

  24. The Patriots have one of the best offenses, but one of the worse Defenses in the league… Buffalo has a slightly above average defense and one of the worse offenses in the league w/an average run game.
    Patriots Offense- Passing(1st) Rushing(14th) Overall(1st)
    Bills Defense- Passing(11th) Rushing(12th) Overall(8th)
    Bills Offense- Passing(30th) Rushing(12th) Overall(26th)
    Patriots Defense- Passing(32nd)Rushing(23rd) Overall(31st)

If the Bills don’t match the Patriots score for score the game will get out of hand and New England will win big, but If the Bills Defense can slow the Pats offense down, while putting up points on one of the leagues worse defenses the Bills could come out with the W. It all depends on which Bills Defense shows up Sunday… If it’s the same D that played Atlanta or Kansas City it will be a good game, but if the defense that played Cincinnati or New Orleans the Pats will pulverize the Bills.

Well, they also had to go up against the refs that game, if you’ll remember. Morelli should have been fired afterwards. I’ve never seen such a disparity in calls in a game.

  29. ” If there was ever a year that was set up for Detroit to win the NFC North, this is the year.”

On the surface that seems accurate, the fact is however that less wins would’ve won the north last year than it will take to win it this year. Still though, my Lions blew it Thursday. They played and looked like crap and I hate them for it.

I think (with apologies to Pittsburgh fans) the Pats remaining opponents are all overmatched and know it and that gunning for Brady will be the big focus the rest of the way out. I felt the Dolphins looked like a team that knew that game was not going to be theirs so they wanted a piece of Brady as a consolation prize. I think they will see a lot of that now. Especially when hurting him is considered the only way to prevent a SB repeat. The downside on that is that Brady takes hits then. The upside is that the Patriots will respond to that by getting better (‘getting better’ is their response to pretty much anything) at protecting him which will help in the playoffs. (If you are a hater just reverse my use of the words ‘upside’ and ‘downside’)

I think you make some fair points but the stats on the Patriots defense you list don’t give the full picture. They were atrocious the first 4 weeks of the season, but have been better than average the last 7. They have given up the fewest points in the league last 7 games and are currently 11th for the entire season, after being 31st after 4 games. So I think Buffalo will move the ball but they will need to finish drives with TD’s to have any chance to win.

While I agree with every bit of this reasoning that the Eagles have not had to face much adversity and that is about to change with Seattle who would be a handful for any team coming into their stadium this week. But still the Eagles look to me like a team that will rise up and overcome the challenge. I think they are a for real contender not that likely (never say never) to choke on the way to facing most likely (but never say never) the Patriots in the SB. I actually would then pick the Patriots to win that in a close game, but we would have to see.

Blaine Gabbert led a bad team like the Cardinals over a good team like the Jaguars, with the league’s best defense. Why can’t he lead the Cardinals over the Rams?

    ____________

Easy because the Rams don’t have Blake Bortles at quarterback, who had just 160 passing yards and the Jags had just 219 total yards but still scored 24 points. Maybe also because of the fact that the Cardinals have the 26th scoring defense, the 18th pass defense, the 32nd rushing offense, and the 24th scoring offense. Also maybe the fact the Tom Savage put up 31 points against them just 2 games ago.

Four straight weeks on prime time TV for Pittsburgh….a game at home the week before they play the Patriots, who have to play a Monday night road game and then play Pittsburgh on the road, on a short week.

Actually, they have faced the same adversity that’s currently destroying the Cowboys and making Rayne Dakota Prescott look like a system QB… They lost Jason Peters playing at an All-Pro level, Jordan Hicks and Darren Sproles for the entire year. They lost their best cornerback Ronald Darby for half the season about a quarter into the first game. They have played games without Pro Bowl talents like Lane Johnson, Fletcher Cox and Zach Ertz. Adversity comes in all types, but this Eagles team has certainly had its fair share. The only reason that you do not hear about it and statements like yours are made, is because they have been able to overcome it.

  44. Vikings match up pretty well against the Falcons offense. They have the secondary and the pass rush to keep the Falcons’ passing game in check. Atlanta has a pretty good defense too, but not as likely to keep points off the board for the Vikings.

Falcons are 3 point favorites at home, but I’d take the Vikings all the way.

Well, they also had to go up against the refs that game, if you’ll remember. Morelli should have been fired afterwards. I’ve never seen such a disparity in calls in a game.

You obviously didn’t watch the early game on Thanksgiving.

In the words of Mike Florio:

“On Thanksgiving, the Vikings beat not only the 11 players in Honolulu blue and silver but also the folks in black and white stripes.

At least three horrible calls from referee Tony Corrente’s crew helped open the door for a potential Detroit Lions comeback. From a catch by receiver Kenny Golladay that set up a touchdown that cut the score at the half from 20-3 to 20-10 (the ball hit the ground and moved, and it was much more clear and obvious that the Zach Miller reversal from earlier in the season) to a horrific pass interference non-call when receiver Stefon Diggs was mugged as the ball was landing on what would have helped the Vikings stretch the lead to 30-13 or 34-13 to a goofy taunting call on quarterback Case Keenum for flipping the ball in the direction of Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah, it almost seemed as if the officials were trying to give the game to the home team.”

On Monday after the 23 point blow out you will be saying how the eagles still haven’t played anyone and the Seahawks were injured and blah blah blah

No way that the Hawks lose by 23, no way. The odds are against them but they just might pull the upset.

Then you will look pretty silly.

If the Eagles destroy the Seahawks and Rams like how they destroyed Bears, and win all their remaining games I’ll glad admit they are unstoppable. The fact is they have faced 1 above .500. Other teams like the Rams, Saints and Vikings have faced more teams with winning records. The Eagles still might be better than those teams, but maybe not a mile ahead like the illusion of destroying teams like the Bears. The Rams were destroying teams, and were held to 7 points by the Vikings.

It’s almost cruel letting Vikings’ fans believe their team has a chance at a SB victory….

    ———–

It’s almost annoying when people like you leave comments like this…wait…it is annoying. The Vikings are a very good team and if they make the playoffs they absolutely have a chance.

#5 ranked offense and #5 ranked defense. Very balanced team.

    ———-

Like I said…it’s almost cruel. But we all know how this ends….we have seen this before

    ————

The Saints had one of the worst winning % in history, hardly made the playoffs, and they won in 2009. We knew how that ended to, huh? You don’t know anything, I don’ t know anything. Of course fans believe, if you don’t believe your team has a chance, what’s the point? It’s absolute ludicrous to say this team doesn’t at least have a chance. I’m guessing you are a pats fan (judging from your name) or a packer fan who hasn’t watched this team, and just see’s that Case Kneenum is the QB. Why don’t you learn more about the team your insulting. They have the #5 ranked offense and defense. They are playing great defense and consistent on offense. They are playing the type of fundamentally sound football you want to in Jan. This team has been competitive ever since Zimmer has been coach and has deph to survive injuries which is why we are winning with Case Kneenum. The only way they don’t have a chance is if they don’t make the playoffs, or they decide to cease to exist as a franchise. As a Vikings fan I’m well aware of being let down, and I don’t need annoying people like you to remind me, but to say this team isn’t good is just ridiculous. Most fans are not predicting a SB win or anything we are just enjoying our season and we don’t need people like you to ruin our good time.

  49. The Eagles are the sixth team since the 1970 merger to score 350+ points and allow fewer than 200 points over the first 11 games of a season. Each of the previous 5 teams to do so went to the Super Bowl (2007 Patriots, 1999 Rams, 1998 Broncos, 1991 Redskins, 1984 Dolphins).

  50. NFC team in the Super Bowl will for the third time come from the South, but this time they’ll win, because it’ll be Drew and crew.

  51. I can understand all the recent attention being paid to the San Diego Chargers (sorry but they’ll ALWAYS be SD to me). They’ve won some games lately but they’re overrated. They’re not as good as they may have people think. They’re UNDER 500 for the year and are due to return to reality.

It could be this very week. Am I the only one who remembers that it was the Chargers that the Browns beat last season for their only win? And that was without Josh Gordon. Just saying…..
