Elway won’t make staff changes until after the season

AP

The Broncos, two years after making it to the Super Bowl and winning it, have won only three of 12 games in 2017, with eight losses in a row and counting. The man running the football operation has concerns about how things have gotten to this point, but he vows to make no staff changes until the season ends.

“We’re gonna finish the season out and, you know, obviously we know the expectations of the Denver Broncos,” G.M. John Elway told Dave Logan of Orange & Blue 760. “And this has been a tough year. It’s not what the Broncos are about. I’m embarrassed about it, the fact that this has happened, and will do my part to hopefully get this thing turned around next year, and the expectations of Broncos fans should be for us to get this turned around.”

Elway pointed out that, apart from the eight straight losses, too many of them have happened by double digits. By 13 to the Giants, but 21 to the Chargers, by 10 to the Chiefs, by 28 to the Eagles, by 25 to the Patriots, and most recently by 26 to the Dolphins.

One staff change already was made, with the firing of offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Head coach Vance Joseph undoubtedly is on the hot seat, with the key question whether Elway would be willing to admit the error of hiring Joseph by firing him after only one season.

The Broncos last had a losing season in 2010, when they went 4-12. The franchise hasn’t had consecutive losing seasons since 1971-72.

  1. Elway has been one of the better GM’s since he started at that capacity and despite the many misses assembling this years team I expect Elway and the Broncos to bounce back next year.

  2. I dunno why bronco’s fans are so obsessed with Elway the GM, Elway the player was great, the GM is pure trash. The superbowl teams where built by GM Manning not GM Elways, look at the teams before and after manning, pure trash. Besides Von Miller (who was an automatic pick) who has been drafted that’s better than subpar?

  3. I’m starting to think Elway just got really lucky. His personnel moves (Wade, Manning, Sanders, Ware, Talib, Ward, Malik, Wolfe, Von) all came together in a freakish way in 2015, and everything went right.

His recent personnel moves have been abysmal. Seriously, who is the Bronco’s best choice in the last 3 or 4 drafts? Garrett Bolles? Not to mention his recent coaching hire. It will be interesting to see if he can rebuild the team again.

  4. Elway put together the greatest offense of all time that went to Super Bowl 48. After SB48 it became clear to be successful the team needed a better defense with a subdued Manning running a ball control offense.

So Elway assembled arguably one of the greatest defenses of all time that went to Super Bowl 50 just 2 years later and won with Manning playing the role he needed to play.

Elway missed on Lynch but the Broncos still have a young core on defense to build around. With an upcoming high draft pick this is the draft that will ultimately decide Elway’s fate. You can’t miss on a pick this high and he didn’t last time drafting Von Miller #2 overall.

It’s never boring in Broncos country!

Agree on all counts except don’t forget Wade Phillips’s essential contribution. After Wade’s defense got the GENIUS a Super Blow, Elway let him go to L.A. and voila, the GENIUS hero/sun god who can do no wrong (unless you live outside Colorado) is staring at a right fine mess. Perhaps he’s finding out that getting a super bowl win is not the most difficult thing in the NFL, but that building an organization that is competitive and contending year after year is many, many times harder because it requires that you actually know what you are doing in every single area of both the sport and the business.

  6. Wade is at the end of his career and other teams were going to poach Joe Woods away so Elway had to make that move. Credit Elway for bringing Wade in after NO team touched him the previous year. He wanted to coach but teams thought he was done.

  7. Just a thought. It looks pretty bad in Denver, and it isn’t all about not having a great QB. But the first thought that came to mind as I read the post was, if I recall correctly, didin’t Bill Parcells have something like a 2-14 record after his first year? Bellichicks first year with the Pats was 5-11 and he wasn’t a rookie HC either.

Just saying that just like you often don’t know exactly what you have after a player’s first year, the same might said of a rookie HC

Joe Woods? AN unproven position coach? Who cares about Joe Woods? They already had Wade Phillips and let him go. Besides, they hired Vance Joseph, who is the de facto DC and implemented his system. How has that worked out?

  9. “ The greatest Offense of all time” went to Super Bowl 48? The team that could only score 8 points, that team?? Unlike the Denver team @ Super Bowl 48, the GOAT TB12 was able to come back from 28-3 in Super Bowl 51 and he was also able to beat the team Denver lost to 43-8 the very NEXT year.

  10. They’ll rebuild pretty quickly if they concentrate on their real problem–the offensive line. They need a QB, obviously, but without a line nobody is going to look good playing QB for them. They don’t consistently run block well and their pass protection is terrible. They fired the OC but they’ve been no better since because without a line you can’t do anything but run short pass plays–and that allows the defense to defend a small field the entire game.

  11. Long Time Denverite here, although I hate the BRoncos

The deicision to put in Tebow in 2011, was to hopefully tank even FURTHER than Orton and get Andrew Luck the next year. When Tebow did his thing it back fired.
HOWEVER, winning a playoff game for Denver, put them on the map again. And made Denver even MORE appealing to Peyton Manning. 2AFCC and a superbowl. Winners win, and there are now 10 more nameable bars and high class restaurants in Denver not to mention the apartments, housing and changes to the city as a result. Anyone who has been in denver the last 5 years has seen in explode and its infact due to the Broncos hype.

Like it or not Elway is here to stay and will go the Bowlin route, will literally be having Alzchimers symptoms before they pry the team from him.

So, you’re saying Elway made the exact same mistake he saw everybody else making? Because watching the Rams, Wade is anything but done. Meanwhile, the Broncos D has regressed across the board under Joe Woods. Elway got caught thinking it was the entirely the players with nothing to do with the coaches or scheme. Letting Wade walk is the biggest mistake Elway has made as GM.

i agree and it is fantastic news for other afc teams

anyone can open a checkbook and get lucky

and some teams collude with the commissioner to cheat by making tnat commissioner allow ped use their qb, too

  14. It’s hard to believe how far and fast the Broncos have fallen…

You give BB that roster and they have a winning record. Plenty of talent, not much discipline….

  15. Elway has been an excellent GM. How many GM’s have won the super bowl over the last 3 years? How many teams have been more successful than the Broncos since Elway took over? I get it that some people hate very successful people. Maybe they’ve never accomplished anything and they’re resentful of people who seem to succeed at everything. Lots of people hate Manning and Brady too. I don’t have a love affair going with any of these guys, but I don’t know how you can like football and not love these guys. Well, maybe being hateful is the hip thing to do these days.

  16. How could Elway not understand that when you have two elite receivers, you need a starting calibre QB? He made the right call in 2016 not paying Brock Osweiler, but it had to be obvious to him after that season that neither Siemian or Lynch was the guy.

I don’t even want to mention his name, but even HE would have been a better piCKup than any of the clowns they have on the roster.

It was Kubiak that brought in Wade Phillips, not Elway.

Elway has been an excellent GM. How many GM’s have won the super bowl over the last 3 years? How many teams have been more successful than the Broncos since Elway took over?
    —————————–

3 years is your time span? Lol. 2 GMs have won the 3 Super Bowls in that time. Elway and Belichick.

The point is, that if Elway was truly a good GM, he would have had more success the last 2 seasons. They weren’t all that before Manning, and they aren’t anything after him.

Yes Elway did. But that defense Elway put together did not have to face ‘the greatest offense of all time’ in the SB. That defense faced a Panther team that over achieved to gain a SB berth. The ‘greatest defense’ ever to defeat the ‘greatest offense’ ever in a SB was Seattle, which defeated that offense 43-8.

  20. I honestly never understood the Vance Joseph hire…

He was only a DC for one year and his defense was garbage. IIRC his Miami defense was ranked 30th.

Then all the sudden he’s interviewing for a head coaching job, and gets it? And I seen all sorts of fans saying what a genius hire it was by Elway…?

Like I said, I never got it.

  21. Elway is a pioneer…a true legend…winning a Superbowl as both a player and gm…who else can lay claim to that? And what else? He’s the first gm to win a Superbowl through free agency since the Saints in 2010…who else can lay claim to that? #givepropswhenpropsaredue

  22. Man, fans are tough. Most legendary player in franchise history becomes GM of the team. They go to 2 SBs, win one. And less than 2 seasons later they want to run him out of town.

Not to mention some of the geniuses here. “He is throwing everyone under the bus”, “Tells me he is in over his head.” SMH

Most people would love to have the performance the Broncos have had for their team on their resume. 6 years, 2 SBs, a ring, and no losing seasons until this one. Formerly fielded some of the best D’s in football. So he might have made a mistake in Joseph, I don’t know, but something isn’t working right THIS YEAR. That does not a career make.
