Jimmy Haslam says he isn’t selling Browns

Rumors that Jimmy Haslam might look to sell the Browns began in the Cleveland business community recently, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. But Haslam shot that down Sunday, insisting he’s fully committed to ownership of the league’s worst franchise.

“I don’t know where that would come from,” Haslam said. “That really aggravates me. Nothing could be further from the truth. Our commitment to the community and team. . . . Our execution might not be very good and I’ll take all the grief for that, but commitment you can’t question.

“So I unequivocally say that’s false and plan on owning the Browns for a long time and turning this franchise around.”

The Browns became the second 0-16 team in NFL history, joining the 2008 Lions. They are only 1-31 the past two seasons and 4-44 over the past three. Since Haslam closed the sale to buy the team, the Browns are 19-70.

“I think it’s . . . ownership, personnel, coaching,” Haslam said. “We can all do better, OK? And I don’t think there’s anybody that would tell you any differently. I know I could do a helluva lot better.”

  1. Since the Cleveland football team is very nearly a guaranteed win for the team that plays them, I think that a victory against them should not be counted. The only impact on a team is if you lose to them – and that should count – and hurt.

  2. Unfortunate! He’s consistent only in his bad decisions! Keeping Clueless Jackson in place after 1-31 is breathtaking!

Time for the NFL to take over the team and find capable management!

  3. .
The Browns were 60 million under the cap. The 60 million goes directly into Haslam’s pocket. Where else can he buy another license to print that kind of money?

  4. Jimmy Haslam is just Randy Lerner 2.0. Sell the franchise Mr. Haslam, surely someone else can do better.

  5. The Browns are not an NFL team. They are a financial instrument for the benefit of Jimmy Haslam. This is what is so insidious about the NFL. Owners line their pockets no matter if they go 0-16 and are pathetic year after year. This must change.

  6. he’s right they can do better, can’t possibly be any worse. How on earth does 0-16 NOT get you fired? Go back to ripping off truckers

  7. Sell? Browns fans are some of the most loyal sports fans on this flat Earth (thanks Kyrie!). He’ll make money of the franchise regardless. And stink they may be, but if they said they’d relocate, cities around the country would fall head over foot to get them there. But they have a nice opportunity to draft a QB who won’t toss 21 picks and fumble 6 times AND one of the plethora of elite backs coming out this year with two of the top four. I bet they win 6 games next year.

  8. I’m not a Browns fan but I’m a Jimmy Haslam fan, and I’d like to see him turn this thing around. Some owners are only in it for the money. They have lousy coaches and lousy GM’s, but they just keep counting their money. Haslam is actually trying to figure out how to win. He keeps hiring guys, but as soon as he finds out he hired the wrong guy, he fires him and eats his contract. I don’t think the new GM is the guy that’s going to take them to the promised land, but I think he’s good enough to get them to 8-8. He’ll be gone in a couple years and Haslam will continue to try to hire the right guy. All these personnel guys have hundreds of scouting reports they’ve written over the years. I still can’t believe owners don’t ask to look at them. That will tell you in a heartbeat who the good personnel guys are.

  9. The Browns have won FOUR games in three years that is beyond pathetic. They have just gone 0-16 becoming the third team to do so in the modern era…pathetic. The last two QBs to win a game for the browns (RG3 and Johnny Manziel) are no longer in the NFL…Super pathetic. I have been a Browns fan my entire life and I don’t think I can do it for much longer. With the comments today from Haslem calling his 1-31 head coach a potential hero illustrates that he does not have the chops to run a football franchise. The NFL needs to step in and force out Haslem for being detrimental to the league.

  10. Everyone wanted Lerner out and he was replaced with Haslam who has no clear idea how to run a team or have a proper reporting structure. I wish the Browns could have an owner situation like the Green Bay Packers.

  11. There is something wrong with Mr Haslam. If he had no previous ties with the Steelers before this ownership, I would be saying, okay give him a break, he is a new owner. However, he has been in ownership with the Rooneys….. it is almost like he is doing the exact opposite of them. He must like wasting money and making Clevelanders suffer.

  12. You can’t pretend you care about winning or the fans if you let Hue coach another game for you. He has shown nothing in preparation or game management to tell you he is anything but a BOTTOM 3 Head Coach.

  13. You certainly have found solid rock bottom, and over time, you have perfected the bottom seat of dysfunction and draft failure. So obviously Haslam, the only way to go is up.

  14. The Browns aren’t worth a penny until they fire Hue Jackson. How can they stick with a coach that has gone 1-31 in his last 32 games? I think the NFL should force a sale of the team to someone who’ll get a halfway credible coach to turn things around

  15. I feel for all of the Browns fans. They deserve better than an idiot owner who fires his GM and his coach every couple of years. Just because Jimmy made a lot of money, doesn’t make him smart enough to be able to compete with the other teams. The 0 – 16 record this year is a fair reflection of the series of terrible decisions made by Haslem over a period of time.
At what point can the other owners push to kick him out of the NFL? Because his team is not competitive, it drags down the whole NFL.

  16. He should be forced to do something. I’m pretty sure in the NHL when the Oilers were gifted Connor McDavid the league told them they had to change their ways. The same should apply to Cleveland.

  18. Why would he sell them? Being 60 million under the salary cap, he screwing Browns fans out of more money than he got from the trucking companies.

  19. Haslam says: “So I unequivocally say that’s false and plan on owning the Browns for a long time”

My condolences to Browns fans. I think that Haslam is one of the few owners who’s even worse than Son-of-Al with my Raiders.
