PFT’s wild card picks

When the postseason starts, everyone’s record re-sets to 0-0. Including mine. Which is very good news.

MDS won the regular-season picks contest easily. The postseason version has only 11 games, and we’re starting from scratch.

We disagree on one game, which means one of us (probably me) will be behind by a game come Monday.

For our picks for all four games, keep reading.

Titans at Chiefs

MDS’s take: The Chiefs went through an ugly mid-season swoon, but by and large they were a good team this year. The Titans, on the other hand, got into the playoffs more because the AFC was weak than because they were really the kind of team we think of as playoff-caliber. On Saturday in Kansas City, I have a hard time seeing Tennessee pulling off an upset.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 28, Titans 14.

Florio’s take: The Chiefs have rediscovered their offense. The Titans in many ways are still trying to find theirs. Arrowhead Stadium provides a home-field advantage that should deliver more wins than it does; it will help deliver one on Saturday.

Florio’s pick: Chiefs 27, Titans 17.

Falcons at Rams

MDS’s take: The Rams have been perhaps the most fun team in the league this year, with exciting young players on offense and defense, not to mention an exciting young coach. It’s a shame that they still haven’t really caught on in Los Angeles, but maybe a playoff win will do the trick. They should win this game handily, as they’re a better team than the Falcons on offense, defense and special teams.

MDS’s pick: Rams 32, Falcons 21.

Florio’s take: The Rams are believed to have wanted to slide to No. 4 on the playoff tree, so that they’d face the Panthers instead of the Falcons this weekend. It didn’t work out that way. The Rams may be the best team playing this weekend, but they also may be the home team most vulnerable to losing. If the Falcons can hold a fourth-quarter lead.

Florio’s pick: Falcons 27, Rams 23.

Bills at Jaguars

MDS’s take: The Bills and Jaguars were the only two teams in the league that didn’t pass the ball more than they ran it in 2017. (Buffalo had 487 runs and 476 passes, Jacksonville had 527 runs and 527 passes.) So I expect a run-heavy ballgame, probably low scoring and possibly determined by a defensive or special teams touchdown. The Jaguars’ defense should be able to hold the Bills in check, especially with LeSean McCoy injured, and Jacksonville should take this one.

MDS’s pick: Jaguars 16, Bills 7.

Florio’s take: If the “good” Jaguars show up, this should be a laugher. If the “bad” Jaguars arrive at EverBank Field, the Bills could be securing a third game against the Patriots. But Jacksonville has one thing Buffalo doesn’t — Tom Coughlin. And Coughlin will make sure that everyone knows what it takes to have success in January.

Florio’s pick: Jaguars 24, Bills 14.

Panthers at Saints

MDS’s take: This should be the weekend’s best game. Cam Newton has been up-and-down this year, but I have a feeling he’s going to be up for his first postseason game since Super Bowl 50. However, I love the potential of the Saints’ offense to put up a lot of points on the Panthers’ defense, and I’ll pick New Orleans to pull out a close win at home.

MDS’s pick: Saints 31, Panthers 27.

Florio’s take: The cliché that it’s hard to beat a team three times in the same year doesn’t really apply as strongly as many believe. It definitely doesn’t apply to this current rivalry, where the Saints know how to build and hold leads against a Carolina team that is one of the best in the conference, but not good enough to win in the Superdome.

Florio’s pick: Saints 30, Panthers 21.

  1. The NFC games are both intriguing. The AFC games are bad and worse. None of these 4 will survive against Pittsburgh or New England.

Great QBs win consistently in the NFL(there are always exceptions), and look at who is the best of the WC AFC teams…. Bortles…maybe Taylor? Could be Alex Smith if the good Alex Smith shows up….or Marcus Mariotta? Not exactly a line up of future hall of famers…

Now on the NFC you have Ryan, Brees, Newton and Goff playing this weekend. If you ranked all 8, these 4 guys would be the top 4…easily!

  2. “The Titans, on the other hand, got into the playoffs more because the AFC was weak…”

I am getting tired of people saying this. We’re talking about the Titans here… If the AFC was really THAT weak, then the Ravens, Broncos, Chargers, etc. would’ve made it in. These have been perennial playoff teams for the last decade or so. THOSE are teams that should make it in by default if the rest of the conference is weak. Not the Titans. The Titans earned it, whether you are willing to accept it or not.

  3. .
Each team will give you a sense of how they’re reacting to playoff football early on. . Besides the obvious turnovers, undisciplined teams taking foolish penalties in the first quarter are rarely around in the fourth.
    .

  4. I know people have gotten on the Jag bandwagon, but I think the stadium will easily be half BILLS fans…might sound like a home game for Buffalo.

Yep, easy one for the Jags… unless it isnt…….
    ——————————
Ditto for the Chiefs should be an easy win against a QB that threw more interceptions than TDs…unless it isn’t

  6. If the good Bortles shows up the Jaguars will beat the Bills, but if the Bortles of the last two weeks shows up, Gaines, White, Poyer & Hyde will have fun making his life miserable and Buffalo will upset the 8.5 point favorites.

  7. People need to realize that there are millions of Bills fans scattered all over the place and we win turn that stadium into our stadium, tarps are off and the Bills are on. If you had to draft a QB right now, would take Blake Bottles or Tyrod Taylor ??? Exactly.

Bills torch the Jags & Sean MC out-coaches Marrone, oh what a MARRONE !!

  8. I think He Bills are an excellent pick this weekend, they have the better QB, and they just have a little something more in the intangible department.

  9. Repeat of Super Bowl IV….Chiefs vs. Vikings. And neither the Cheaters nor the Steelers make the AFC Championship Game.

  10. “So I expect a run-heavy ballgame, probably low scoring and possibly determined by a defensive or special teams touchdown.”

Because its going to be a low scoring game determined by defensive turnovers, you choose the Jags (a team with a great defense but a QB who gives the ball away) over the Bills (a team with a great turnover defense and a QB that rarely if ever turns over the ball?). If this game turns into a defensive battle, its the Bills to lose. Their offense is too careful to give away that game changing turnover, their defense is EXCELLENT at creating those game changing turnovers and they have a kicker that set the record for most consecutive FGs made from 50+. If the Jags make it a defensive game, the Bills will win. Bortles needs to beat Buffalo with his arm

  11. Buffalo will win this game, Jacksonville isn’t as good as everybody seems to think they are. They finished the season with a thud(how you aren’t motivated to eliminate a division opponent is beyond me), Blake Bortles is back to playing the way we know he does. If things get chippy, the Jaguars will probably take the penalties more so than the Bills based on the way the Dolphins game unraveled and Buffalo survived it. I think they dare Bortles to beat them, and he won’t. The Bills, surprisingly, have more post-season experience, specifically on the coaching staff. It won’t be a blowout, 24-21 Bills.

  13. I’m very interested in watching Alex Smith. If he wins this game like he should I think he should be worth a 2nd round pick in the offseason. But what if he were to get to the AFC championship game, or win the SB… Has a QB ever been traded away like that? Would he be worth a 1st round pick to a team with a good defense? Would KC even trade him, would they trade Mahommes as Alex looks to have a couple strong years left? Would Mahommes be worth a top 5 pick, he’s surely better than anyone in the draft…

But at 1-3 with the Chiefs in the playoffs, I think Alex has a lot to prove.

Have you ever gone to a Bills road game down South? Ask Atlanta how loud that stadium was with Bills fans? Ask Carolina why the stands were easily 1/3 Buffalo fans? and BTW we are way louder than most fan bases out there. Yes I’ll be there, I don’t need to sleep on it

The Rams may have had a preference for the Panthers over the Falcons, but they really tanked so they could face the Eagles in the second round rather than the Vikings.

    ———————–

I don’t get why teams Tank to face certain teams in the playoffs. If your going to win the Superbowl, you are going to play the better teams eventually anyways. It makes no sense. Always play to win.

  16. “The Rams are believed to have wanted to slide to No. 4…”

Translation: The Rams are believed by Florio to have wanted to slide to No. 4…

The Rams are going to win this game and it will be the biggest margin of victory of the weekend.

  17. Titans have played in a few games this year that they looked to be a strong team.. Then they have other games they don’t.. The Chiefs have done the same but in their strong games they looked much stronger… Chiefs win

The Jags Defense are no joke… If their offense doesn’t turnover the ball and wear out their own defense, the Bills are in for a rough day… Jags win

The Saints have beaten the Panthers twice this year by double digits… I see the Panthers as a 1 and done team… Saints win

The Rams have been a surprise playing well this year.. They have talent and have shown they are no pushover.. The Falcons are basically the same team under a different OC so though they have the talent to score they are still putting it all together.. The Rams youth and inexperience catches up with them and the Falcons are out to redeem themselves from last year.. Falcons win!

  24. 1 upset in 8 picks? Is it really that crazy to think the Titans would upset KC? They beat them last year and KC lost to the Jets and Giants this year. Did they heat back up or will they flounder? I like JAX over BUF too but thats also a toss up. What if Bortles decides to implode and puts them in a hole early? The Bills D isnt shabby at all. I think McVay has something special in LA, but many are sleeping on the Falcons because of the slow start and “SB hangover.” They could easily get the upset. I dont think the Saints will lose to Carolina, the other 3 I think could be upsets. I’d pick TEN, JAX, ATL, and NO.

    LAR Def-#19

    Atl Kicker- Matt Bryant
    Atl Kicker- Sam Ficken

And the Rams have the weakest home field advantage in the league. Florio’s banking on the Rams playoff experience I suppose.

  30. I love that the Bills haven’t sniffed the playoffs in 17 years, have the distinction of losing 4 SBs IN A ROW! And it took a total defensive breakdown by the Ravens to get in…..But yet their fans are puffing their little chests out and talking smack…. lol clowns

Regardless of how the season plays out, Clark Hunt is not telling Andy Reid that he has to keep Alex Smith, and the Chiefs are not trading Mahommes.

  34. Home teams win easily in the AFC, while I do see the road dogs coming out on top in the NFC. I’ll take playoff experience over youth. Rams O is very overrated, it all runs thru Gurley. Stop him, stop the Rams. Look at their stats vs top D’s. N.O. Def will be exposed in the playoffs too. Hell, Jameis exposed them last wk. Car will shut down NO run game this time.

Rams were playing for 4th seed thinking they would get Philly rather than MN in the next rd. They weren’t worried about wild card opponent, coach is already looking ahead. The coach is basically saying “I want no part of MN in the next rd. I’d rather play Phil. Thinking ahead will always get you beat!

  35. We’re not talking smack. No one gives us a chance, every post says Jags in a laugher…and we’re talking smack????
Fact is we’ll be there in numbers. Bills fans travel well, especially for a playoff game which obviously has been a while……Win or lose you’ll hear our support Sunday.

  36. If saints win they get to play Vikings, Brees will choke against Zimmer’s defense, just watch. No star qb has good # against Zim’s complicated defense.

    ————————-

How do you figure? Are the Saints even that good? I was looking at their schedule. Sure they beat the Panthers, but that is really their only signature win. The Falcons are so and so, and they split with them. They also lost to a terrible BUCS team.

Yes the Saints have blow up the score, and their defense has been dominant….Against the Jets, Bears, Rodgerless Packers…you get my point. The VIkings beat the Saints in week one.

But the Saints…they are a way better team…you say! Well the Vikings are way better to. The Defense is worlds better and the offense is just as efficient. I would agree with you if this game would be played at the Superdome, but it’s not. There are many reasons to think MN will win against the Saints. So to just assume it is ridiculous. I’m not assuming either. Anything can happen. But the Saints resume of win is not very impressive. The Saints should just be happy they probably won’t have to face the Rams.

The Vikings are capable of containing Brees. Just look at Week 1. The Vikings dominated Brees in Minnesota and if a rematch happens in the NFC Champtionship game, then the Vikings have that shot at going 2-0 against a team they previously struggled against in the last decade.

  46. @cheek2vegas

Please help me out with something. Jaguars and Bills haven’t fielded good team for quite some time. Every single Bills fan comment is trash talking, negative, pumping chest, Jaguar bashing etc. What is all the anger about with this Bills fans. Is it the cold snow every year this time that makes you all angry or what. Jags are the better team this season amd you don’t t have to admit it, but that’s just a fact and every NFL analyst along with Vegas agrees. Bills made it into playoffs with some help, but that doesn’t matter. You’re in the playoffs. Calm down and let’s all enjoy the game on Sunday at 1:00.

  47. Lotta hubris outta the Jags fans too….listen the Bills are happy to be here, fact. It’s been a long time, fact. Yes everyone, we did lose 4 SB’s in a row, fact. Despite Buffalo not even making the playoffs since 1999, the Jag have exactly 1 more win in the playoffs over that time. Yeah 1 win, which is odd since, like we didn’t even make it y’all. Hope you don’t get cheered outta your own stadium this weekend by the droves of Bills fans

  48. Chiefs 28 Titans 13 I fully expect Kareem Hunt to run wild in this game with some turnovers from KC’s defense to roll over the Titans. Falcons 24 Rams 21 even though the Rams defense looks good I fully expect Julio Jones and Sanu to have big days and open up the game for the Falcons. Bills 17 Jaguars 10 this will be a low scoring game in which Buffalo’s defense comes up with a key interception to decide the game. Finally, Saints 38 Panthers 31 Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram will have big days plus Brees should make some clutch throws to ice the game.

  50. Wow ok. You Bills fans obviously need to find a hobby. It’s football, not life or death. Jaguar fans love this team but maybe living in Florida we just have more things to do in January other than stay inside all winter watching a football like in Buffalo. So yeah go ahead and cheer Jag fans outta the stadium if you really think a few Bills fans will be louder than our fans in our stadium …lol. Sure buddy

  51. @nationalmedia

Plenty of hobbies, but not many while I’m sitting at my desk. I never said it was life or death..far from it but it’s a great game especially in playoffs. What does living in Florida have to do with anything? You know not all Bills fan live in Buffalo right? Or is that hard to comprehend. I live down south as well, so take it easy with the subtle winter bashing. And if you think it’s only a few Bills fan, that’s laughable really. Maybe I’m off base, but I really think it’ll be 50/50 ish. I’ll own up to it if I’m wrong. I’ll be there.

I know we seem annoying, but step back remove YOUR bias and also see every post bashing the Bills. It’s not unique to us. I do love how a little optimism from the little old Bills seems to stir everyone up

Anyhoo enjoy the game…Im hoping it’s entertaining

  52. Kind of torn on the NO/Car game. As much as I hate the Saints and want to see them lose…nothing is more entertaining than watching Cam when things don’t go his way.

  53. For everyone picking against the Vikings to lose in the divisional round or the Championship round…….you do realize the Vikings are like one of the only teams without an embarrassing loss this year?

The only bad loss was to the Steelers in Week 2, When Case Keenum found out an hour before the game that he was starting. No prep time, no notice. You can really throw this game out. And also it was road game.

    The other losses

    – Carolina – They lost by one score to a desperate team fighting for a playoff team on the road. Nothing to be ashamed of. They were in the game until the final minute.
    – Lions – They loss like 14- 7. Once again a dominant defensive game for the Vikings. Lost only because of momentum lost when Dalvin Cook tore his ACL in the game. Also three very lucky forced fumbles by the Lions. The lions had a chance at the playoffs until week 16.

Most other teams have lost to bad teams, or non playoff contending teams. The Saints lost to the Bucs, The Patriots loss to Miami, Carolina lost to the Bears.

If MN doesn’t turn the ball over, they don’t lose. In all their losses they turned the ball over. End of story. Don’t sleep on this team.

    From Common Sense:

    Scoring – Rams #1
    Scoring – Falcons #15

Points allowed…Less than a point separates them.

Special teams…Rams are the best in the league, though took a hit in kicking obviously.

The difference between 1st in scoring and 15th is 7.8 points per game. The difference between 9th in defense and 19th is 21.2 yards per game…which equates to all of the garbage yards teams have piled up after the Rams have built their huge leads not to mention pulled their starters.

The Rams have played 6 games against teams with a higher defensive ranking than the Falcons and are 4-2. In those six games, they’ve averaged 28 points.

I’m sure those extra 21.2 yards will come in handy.

  57. Including this week Bills game, the Jags will have played 12 playoff games and 75% of them against the AFC East. Just noticed that looking at old records.

Bills beat Vikings in Superbowl (revenge for loss in the SB in the old Metrodome, and knocks MN to 0-5 and elevates us to 1-4 in Superbowls)

That pretty much exercises all demons, as well as requires a very vivid imagination and s streak of luck that would bankrupt Vegas.

Nobody tanked to do anything. They rested their starters like a lot of people not caring whether they had the 3rd or the 4th seed. Tanking is a creation of PFT and its genius fanbase. No one from the Rams actually said they wanted to play or the other, for all the reasons you just said. If you advance, you’re going to play the other team that advances anyway.

People fight to get the first round bye. They don’t tank to be 3,4,5 or 6. You have no control over that anyway.

Oh please please let Buffalo win this weekend. The Patriots will pummel them so badly Shady will ask to stop the game

    ————————————————————————————

Translation: please let Buffalo win so we don’t have to face the Chiefs who pummeled us so bad at home week 1

Sigh…..when will everyone learn? It’s not that there is a trend to be seen here with the Patriots these last 15-20 years…

    There are 2 certainties:

    1. The Patriots NEVER resemble the team they break training camp with come December/January. They almost always start slow and get better and better as the year progresses. September was a long time ago. It’s amazing actually how consistent this is under Belichick/Brady, regardless of injuries.

    and, 2…

The Chiefs are absolutely not coming into Foxboro and leaving with a win. Not in January. The Pats win the ones that matter and the ridiculously conservative Andy Reid won’t do the things needed to give them a chance to win. He’ll try to trade field goals with Patriot touchdowns like all the scared coaches do–and lose again.

When the Chiefs season is over, they can watch tape of that awesome week 1 win if they want to feel better about it as the Patriots vie for another Super Bowl.

Yeah it’s a little hard to comprehend. I thought all Bills fans lived in Buffalo. I have no bias, I’m a realist. I know Jags fans can say things here and there but seriously go read the difference in tones. But whatever, not into going back and forth. Congrats on making playoffs and good luck on Sunday, but we will be there loud and proud getting this W. DUUUUUUUUVALLLL

  61. Chiefs, Falcons, Jags and Saints

The Falcons played one of the toughest schedules in the league this year. Chiefs might have destiny on their side this year. Bills sound like making the playoffs was their super bowl and the Panthers are not going to show up. Just a feeling, considering the owner dragging up and the distraction of uncertainty.

  62. It’s tough being a Titans fan, I would like to see them win because, well, I’m a Titans fan.
On the other hand, if they lose, maybe they could offer Malarkey an opportunity to seek other employment.
