ESPN article paints picture of the end days for Belichick, Brady, Kraft

Getty Images

In late November, Tom Brady offered up a bleak assessment of the divorces that ultimately occur between sports teams and their best players.

“I think there’s always these types of situations,” Brady told Jim Gray of Westwood One in the aftermath of the clumsy benching of Eli Manning by the Giants. “I think as a fan growing up, I mean to see Joe Montana playing in another uniform and again to see Jerry Rice or Ronnie Lott, you know, guys that I really looked up to and admired, there’s not many happy endings in sports, and you know that’s just the way it is. You always wish for everything to go, you know, like a fairy tale but it doesn’t. Michael Jordan played for the Washington Wizards. I mean who would have ever believed that? And that’s just pro sports.”

The quote seemed odd, given that there are indeed fairy tale endings in sports, typically when a player or a coach wins a championship and walks off into the sunset. A new article from Seth Wickersham of ESPN.com could help explain why Brady would be thinking that even a sixth Super Bowl and an exit stage left wouldn’t be a “happy ending.”

The article, which we’ll be dissecting via a variety of articles throughout the day, suggests that the end is coming for the Patriots dynasty, as a result of what appears to be (based on the Wickersham report) very real tension and dysfunction between and among Brady, Bill Belichick, and Robert Kraft.

So sit back, grab your favorite warm (or cold . . . we won’t tell anyone) beverage and enjoy our take on the various facts and theories and angles that flow from Wickersham’s article.

  1. Its a mistake to believe anything the worldwide joke of sportscasting says, especially about the Pats. They have lied over and over again without remorse or limitation about the wild claims they’ve made about the Pats.

  2. This is just one more reason to hate ESPN. As a Falcons fan I have tremendous respect for what Kraft, Belichick and Brady have accomplished together. I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and don’t really care. Bring on the playoffs.

  3. “The quote seemed odd, given that there are indeed fairy tale endings in sports” -Except that brady has said this multiple times in the past years.

  4. LOL. The start of the NFL playoffs would just not be complete without a dissection, controversial or otherwise, of the only relevant team in the NFL, the New England Patriots.

  5. As a life long Pats fan, I’ve been fortunate to see an almost 25 year run of good times. It started with Parcells and Bledsoe, and continues now with Belichick and Brady. All dynasties come to an end and we are close. Brady is the GOAT but I’ll admit this TB12 stuff is really weird.

  6. Patriots have a week off due to a bye and this is the drivel ESPN is writing about. Seriously?!?! Of course friction occurs between grown men. Same thing in marriages and work relations. I suppose there is a market for folks to dream about the end of days for the Patriots and this is a puff piece by ESPN to make fans of other teams feel hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  7. It is an interesting piece. Any Pats fan not in denial has to believe there is some truth to the story, how much is the big question. At the center you have 3 successful individuals. Their success is based upon working together to achieve their goals. Right now there looks to be some strife and how it all plays out will be known very soon. I imagine there will be some questions asked during the next few news conferences but alas probably not a lot of answers.

  8. It sounds like Tom was buddy buddy with the owner and the owner doesn’t want to ever get rid of his friend. Belichick knows it’s just business, nothing against Tom.

  9. Is this predicated on the pats possibly losing out this year?
    Dang espn. You always have the inside slant. Must be that little weasel, sheffter.

  10. “”If we trade Jimmy, we’re the Cleveland Browns, with no succession plan,” one person inside the building said earlier in the year.”
    ———

    ”One person inside the building” lolololololololol

    .

  11. Like I said. If Belichick really is as livid about things as what’s been pictured in the article… he will resign after this season.
    If he doesn’t… then we will know this is trash.

  12. Both Kraft and Belichick are not wrong in their decisions. Kraft had final say. The only real drama here is the Guerrero stuff. And it’s not really that big a deal. But yes, the 17 year run will be over in the next few years. Belicheck has stated in the past that he didn’t plan on staying in the game into his 70s like Marv Levy. He’ll retire within the next few years, as will Brady. Then the rest of the NFL can catch up.

  13. So you’re telling me there has been an owner, coach and QB together for 16 years, with the QB turning 40 in the sport of football and ESPN and others are predicting it will come to an end soon? Shocking revelation I tell you, just shocking. Way to go out on a limb folks, wake me if you’ve heard this ‘report’ before.

  14. “The article, which we’ll be dissecting via a variety of articles throughout the day, suggests that the end is coming for the Patriots dynasty, as a result of what appears to be (based on the Wickersham report) very real tension and dysfunction between and among Brady, Bill Belichick, and Robert Kraft.”

    Eh, I’m not so sure I agree with this. If the trio is coming to an end, it’s because Brady is 40 and nearing the end of his career. In the midst of this so called dysfunction, the team won the Super Bowl last year and is the # 1 seed in the AFC this year. Most teams would love to be so “dysfunctional.”

    And I am not a Patriots fan … but article sounds a bit “muck-raking” – ISH.

  15. Hahaha even the patriots own hometown newspaper hates those cheating frauds hahaha. Cry little patriot lemmings cry!

  16. Patriots will be 0-3 against NFC North teams in Super Bowls after this season. Sounds like a fairy tale ending to me. Skol!

  17. Tom Brady isn’t just a personality in the greatest region in the country, he is looked at almost as a family member.

    The bottom line is no matter what Belichick’s “road map to football success” system requires, Brady will be a Patriot until he retires even if that comes at the end of a couple of 6-10 seasons.

    Brady has earned whatever ending he wants. And then some. And then some. And then some. And then some…etc.

  18. lol!!!

    one of the funniest things i’ve ever read this side of spygate, deflategate, combines and flophouses and whatever else.

    are you people still waiting on santa claus, too?

  19. You can’t even enjoy a playoff run anymore without some manufactured drama getting plastered all over the place.

  20. ESPN is largely trash, but this article was interesting and cited a lot of examples. I think the demise of the Patriots dynasty is overblown, but it’s clear there is tension.

  21. None of us knew how good Garoppolo would look with the Niners. But, there is a chance that the Pats knew how good he could be. If he ends up being really good, the Pats may regret making the call to stick with Brady for a few more seasons instead of dropping Brady and tagging Garoppolo after the season. That would have been the bold, risky move. But, part of what made the Pats a dynasty was moving on from players before they fell apart.

  22. We long time Patriots fans endured 41 years of varying misery with this team, followed by nearly 20 years of incomparable success. The 20 years has wiped out the previous 40 and we all know the dark times will return but…nothing will ever take away the joy of the last 350 or so Fall and Winter weekends.

  23. Not a Patriots fan. But isn’t it just like BSPN to come out with one of these articles right when the playoffs are about to begin? They are always trying to stir the pot with only opinions never truly any facts.

  24. NE clearly knew what they had in Jimmy. If Brady had the pull to make NE sacrifice the next decade for 1-2 more years, that is insane.

  25. Don’t bother. ESPN has zero credibility as reliable journalists, especially when it comes to covering the Patriots. This is more likely the death throes of a dying institution, grasping desperately for relevance as it slowly dies.

  26. I can’t wait for Brady to retire so I can stop hearing about all of this Patriots related claptrap that is obviously designed to create a distraction during the playoffs/Super Bowl.

    The fact that all of this is coming from ESPN, The Worldwide Leader of Misinformation, is even more ridiculous.

    Get better and beat them on the field, bozos.

  27. Not a single named source, as usual. Simply a story. Consider what Kraft, Belichick and Brady have actually said in the heat of competition or the direct aftermath when emotion is still high. After the comeback in the SB last season Brady was asked how HE brought the team back. He immediately said “WE ALL BROUGHT EACH OTHER BACK”. Kraft immediately after said the success has been due to the great coaches and players. Belichick repeatedly says it’s all about the players. Contrast this with a story with direct quotes attributed to no one.

  28. This is a perfect example of ESPN creating news with an anti-Patriot agenda.

    Now everybody talks about something that hasn’t happened and it serves as a huge distraction.

    I don’t watch ESPN and I never will. Can’t wait until they shrivel up and die.

  29. Do I believe the patriots organization success is based on cheating and lies? Yes. Do I believe ESPN, liberal media, makes up lies? Yes

  30. as a diehard pats fan, ill leave homerism aside. Most of this “bombshell report” is news that has been known for awhile. Guerrero and Belichick have had a pissing contest for years mainly because Alex is NOT A TEAM EMPLOYEE therefor, it looked like he was undermining Bill. Another thing that is grossly inaccurate is the Jimmy G contract offers. Our NBC Boston beat write is Tom Curran. Tom has NAILED EVERYTHING that gets released. He was the first to nail down the Mangini being locked out of team offices because of the jets job and how he was recruiting players and coaches to the jets on the plane ride back from Denver. He said NO OFFERS were made, and it was known because Don Yee is Jimmy AND Tommy’s agent, a bridge deal would not work because Jimmy wanted to START…..

  31. What’s a football season with some kind of sensationalism about the Patriots? Maybe there is some truth to this and maybe not. I don’t care anymore. I have enjoyed the Brady/Belichick run more than I can say. New England football games have brought more fun to our Sunday family dinners and even my youngest grandchild at 4 years old wears her Patriots cheerleader outfit for game days. Everything comes to an end and if this is the end, so be it. But for now, I give absolutely no credibility to ESPN.

  32. .
    I gleaned 3 nuggets from the article:

    1. The whole Guerrero thing is overblown. It’s traditional training methods vs non traditional. It’s a turf battle that occurs in the workforce daily.

    2. Garopollo was an issue whose time for resolution had come. Belichick wanted to retain Jimmy as his QB ace in the hole. He knew he was a valuable asset. Agent Don Yee thought Garopollo was good enough to start elsewhere and didn’t want him to spend his prime years as a well payed backup. As far as only receiving a 2nd rounder, it seemed moving Jimmy was a task he wasn’t happy with so he just made the deal without an auction. He certainly did Yee and JG a solid by moving him to the 49ers as opposed to a less desirable locale.

    3. The McDaniels-Btady sideline tiff is a non story. Every week there’s a similar spats on different teams. Players and coaches are under extreme pressure to perform. One bad game out of the 16 can derail your season. Give me guys who are willing to fight over guys yukking it up while down 28-3.
    .

  33. “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
    Harvey Dent.

    What would we do without the Patriots? Never in the history of sports has there been this level of insanity surrounding a team. I suppose when you’ve accomplished just about everything there is to accomplish in the NFL and have withstood the slings and arrows of the various attempts by lesser men to smear your legacy the only thing left is for the media to try to turn the narrative into a even more kardashian type of story.

  34. So Kraft orders Belichick to trade Garoppolo. That may explain why he came so cheaply to the 49ers. It reminds me of the urban legend of buying a practically new Porche for $1000 because the husband left the wife and he told her to sell it and send him half the money.

  35. The funny thing about this article is that not ONE of the supposed ‘sources’ is given a name. A little suspicious, don’t ya think?

  36. ESPN? The network that falsely reported incorrect information this EXACT time 3 years ago? Solid pass here, They are not qualified to report on the beautiful aromas coming from Brady’s jockstrap let alone some power struggle inside the trophy machine called The Patriots locker room.

  37. Don’t let none of this distract you from the fact that John Harbaugh is looking for a defensive coordinator to “continue” it’s tradition of giving up 4th quarter leads.

  38. Day after playoff loss/SB championship: “The New England Patriots have agreed to part ways with coach Bill Belichick.”

    The following day: “Dave Gettleman announced today that Bill Belichick will be the next head coach of the New York Giants.”

  39. Belichick set this up perfectly with Garropolo succeeding Brady. The Patriot Way would have been to move on from the greatest QB ever and hand over the reigns for another 10 year run. If Kraft intervened he potentially significantly de-valued his franchise and pissed off the greatest coach in NFL history. Never forget that as great as Brady has been no player is bigger than the team.

  40. Kraft let a 40 plus year old QB dictate the future of the franchise he won’t be apart of for long.. Robert will realize how good he had it with a QB who didn’t command Manning like money and let you get away with the winning culture that allowed you to sign guys for discounts compared to what they were worth.

    What is he going to do when Hoody and Brady are gone and he wont be able to get away with that.. If Garropolo really is that guy, and lets face it we should have learned by now with instant QB success to wait till teams get legit film before we label anyone a legit QB, and you got rid of him and you can’t find his replacement. Good luck to you maintaining that discount rate for players when you’re no longer winning..

    Of course what if they find Jimmy’s replacement in the upcoming draft. Will this story matter by then?

  41. Can’t wait to see this wagon’s wheels come off and all of the little bandwagon roaches come scurrying out and running for the hills

  42. Seven trips to the Super Bowl. Five Championships. A royal pain to my Buffalo Bills since 2001.
    If these three can’t play nice with each other, let Brady retire, let Belichick retire, hire Rex Ryan to coach the Patriots and tell Kraft to sell the team like Jerry Richardson is doing with the Panthers. Then sit back and watch their fans remember what mediocrity is like after being on top. Being a Bills fan, I’ll tell you what its like.It’s like being a millionaire the day before the Great Depression hit and finding yourself eating out of garbage cans the next day.

  43. Just another fake article as the pats roll to the superbowl, most were waiting for something to be put out trying to distract the team.. Nobody believes the dribble ESPN puts out mostly the pats players…..

  44. Yeah, it happens. I think this was the year they had circled on the calendar, and Brady’s Benjamin Button routine screwed it up. It was all lined up with a successor for both coach and QB. The dynasty not missing a beat. That didn’t happen, and of course there is now angst.
    But, like other things before, these guys will figure it out. They might be pissy with each other, but the foundation has to be pretty strong for them to work together this long.
    You can’t blame the organization sticking with Brady…he just won the Superbowl in the most amazing comeback — mostly on his arm. He’s about to win the MVP. Yes there are signs of aging.Enough to kick Brady to the curb and roll the dice with the new kid? No way. Remember it goes beyond the field- Tom is more than the QB. I won’t doubt that he becomes a minority owner of the team when he leaves.
    The trainer stuff I’m sure is real.

  45. More tabloid drama the media loves to chase…it’s playoff week, and instead of talking about the games, we want to talk about owner, coach, and player drama?

    This is what is ruining sports; all the negative attention and the constant focus on why we can’t have nice things that the media seems obsessed with reminding fans about. Always chasing the next steroid story, the next broken relationship, the next backdoor politics story, the next Rooney rule failure, the next domestic abuse case, etc.

    Again, it’s playoff week. No wonder fans are walking away. The media wants to make sure there is nothing to root for.

  46. Isn’t ESPN the group who also predicted Marvin Lewis was leaving the Bengals? #twomoreyears

  47. And still ZERO mention of the fact that Don Yee is the agent that represents BOTH Brady and Garoppolo. ESPN is a joke!

    Yee acted in the best interest for both Brady and Garoppolo.. simple fact. Trying to make this into some drama that it isn’t is typical ESPN.

  48. Is this a late Xmas gift for the other 31 teams in the league or an ESPN wishful fantasy from a snowed-in reporter? I think the latter, As cold and calculating that Belichick is, I don’t believe for one second that he underestimates Brady’s relevance to his own success. Brady’s continued dominance at his advanced age is bittersweet for Belichick especially bc he had the heir apparent but he knows Brady is still untouchable.
    Form whatever opinions you want about Belichick but he cares about the history of the game and his legacy. Go back and listen to interviews when he talks about the All Time greats of the game, His boat is named VII rings, for his SB rings, He cares!. He is not going to force out TB while he is still playing at this level, He may not like it but this article is fantasy! Queue the boat sign guy!

  49. So disheartening to the fans. But all those fellas know what each other means to the mix. I say it’s Tom’s trainer with sour grapes. Tom isn’t anything without a bill and bill isn’t half the head coach without RKK giving him the control he needs.
    #blamegisele

  50. Seth Wickersham? Was he not the one who wrote that ridiculous hit piece a couple years back? Yes, that is the guy we should pay attention to. ESPN is practically the Boston Globe at this point.

  51. Really interesting article. I follow various sports sites and they are all talking about this article. Some could (or could not) be exadurated but it all makes sense. We shall see in time but sports is a cut throat industry but it didn’t fall that way with the patriots. We can see loyalty fell with Brady and not the betterment of the team long term. Brady got the pats 5 titles so it’s easy to understand the loyalty.

  52. From the article. Patriots statement.
    “There are several inaccuracies and multiple examples given that absolutely did not occur”
    Yet they ran the article anyway. Remind you of anything? Perhaps 11 of 12 “facts” in the article are wrong….. again?
    Pretty much sums up journalism over there. And they wonder why media is treated with contempt in Foxboro.

  53. What end of days for these guys? Didn’t Brady say he’ll play til 50? That’s another 10 yrs of Super Bowls for the Pats, right??

  54. I am not a Pats fan in the least but this is really absurd. I remember the Steelers of the 70s when Bradshaw and Chuck Noll did not get along at all. Yet they kept winning the games that count.

  55. Real tension and dysfunction??? I think people are grasping at straws.

    Aren’t there 4 Wild Card games this weekend that we should be talking about instead of this kind of stuff??

  56. I’m a Brady and Belichick fan, but I thought it was a mistake trading Garappolo. Ultimately it sounds like it was Robert Kraft’s decision and to let someone who had taken you to 7 and won 5 super bowls is difficult. However, the right decision for the franchise would have been to keep Garappolo and find a way to part ways with Brady. He isn’t going to play until he is 45. I can see that his arm is fading. It looks like he has to try to hard to make the deep throws, which is throwing off his accuracy.

  57. I’m re-watching season 5 of The Wire and (spoiler alert) it’s about (among other things) a fabulist that works for the Baltimore Sun that wholly invents or partially invents stories.

    so yeah it’s like that.

  58. If there was any doubt the Patriots will have the requisite motivation to win another super bowl this should put it to rest. I don’t buy a lot of this but anyone who thinks love wins football games is kidding themselves.

    Most of the pieces Brady and Belichick need to win will be back for the playoffs.

    Thanks ESPN for poking the Patriots, not that they needed it.

  59. LOL!!!

    I know more than Seth WickerSHAM, yet he gets paid to post something as generic as that?

    Comical. All of the lies in that piece are being refuted this morning by people who actually know the exact truth.

    LOL!

    This is as rich as “Spygate” and its lies, “Deflategate, Aaron Hernandex asking BB for advice about a “flophouse” at the Combine in 2013….LOL!!!

    I am literally in tears here.

    The fear and hate is building…The Pats must be a lock to get back to the SB.

    But, all this will do is make them angrier and stronger. As usual.

  60. I do believe Brady and Bill are not buddies. I didn’t need this article to tell me that.

    —————————-

    Seriously Nate, you think the Pats was going to come out and say, oh yes all the information in here are true. lol

    Now, some stuff might not be true. But this article went deeper into the Guerrero issue which we have seen play out from other news sources not named ESPN. And why did the team trade Garappolo for a mere 2nd rounder when previously, they were asking for more. Or why trade him at all, when you go into the 2018 season with a 41 year old QB. you might not want to believe some aspect of the story but don’t pretend there isn’t a story here.

  62. 6 months ago if you asked 10 people who the back up QB for the Patriots was 10 people knew the answer. Ask that question today?

  64. It is highly unlikely that any Patriots fan on this planet sees a grain of validity or credibility in this “story”, given the shoddy, seemingly agenda driven “journalism” that BSPN has engaged in with respect to the team in the past several years. I just saw Wickersham on BSPN because I wanted to hear the manure straight from the horse’s mouth. No mention of sources, and a lot of statements of facts…typical BSPN fishing expedition.

  65. I am going to have so much fun reading these comments again if Belichick and/or Brady is done after this season or the next.

  66. The article says, regarding Belichick after Deflategate:

    “He has even become good friends with Goodell.”

    Any further questions about the credibility of this apparent work of fiction ?

    Any question as to who pushed ESPN to publish it?

  67. THIS WILL GALVANIZE THE PATRIOTS.

    Watch them circle the wagons, enhance their focus & support each other. As a Vikes fan with a team that has a chance this year, I do not want that.

    Is it so hard to believe that there was some “strategic tension” in Foxboro that was similar to Montana/Young?

    If there is any truth to this article, the most telling thing is that BB cares enough to make sure he has or leaves enough strategic talent on the team. If I were a Pats fan, this gives me hope that the Master BB wants to stay involved, either as a head coach or exec.

  68. If I paid attention to ESPN, I wouldn’t come to Pro Football Talk to read all these posts from my fellow fans/experts/trolls. This is much more open, honest and entertaining.

    You have been waiting a long time….wait some more. Oh, and your team will still stink

  70. This is funny, cuz it’s probably entirely accurate, yet ESPN has been such a deplorable Fake News organization for so long that nobody will believe it. It’s like Canseco-syndrome.

    Long live Jimmy Garoppolo!!!

  71. Wow, it didn’t take long for the Patriots’ enabler commenters to get all lined up like ducks in a row. I would think they would have a life beyond their Patriots’ obsessed world.

    I don’t get the knee jerk reaction when anyone says anything negative about the team. If your confident that nothing is wrong in Patriot land, then there is no point in getting all worked up about it. The fact that some many people need to spout off about it, I think proves the point that they have doubts about the Patriots.

    I am no fan of ESPN, I would never defend them. That said, why do you get all worked up over what ESPN says, when so many of you don’t “seem” to believe what is stated in the article.

    Is it just possible that Tom, beyond his contract, isn’t a team guy? That he is a “me” guy? Sure. Most people who enjoy their work and their job, don’t want to lose their job. They don’t want to be replaced. They don’t want to be looking over their shoulder for their possible replacement. It is called being human.

    Everyone on the Patriots roster is replaceable. Even Tom.

  72. BULL SPIT!!!! That moron rep[orter was on Golic & Wingo this morning saying he thinks this will happen & he thinks that the players will do this, he thinks that, He thinks this……No concrete evidence of any kind. Just the 4 letter network trying to get back into the limelight after losing their shorts the past year.

    NOTHING TO SEE HERE!!!!!!!

    BTW, I am NOT a Patriots fan!!!!!!

    Appreciate your honestly, but this is not BB and Brady not getting along. It has nothing to do with anything.

    This is the Boston media, mainly the Herald, and to some degree the Globe, who are stuggling badly (amy get worse with stuff like this), to make a quick buck after some layoffs recently.

    Guerrero was politely asked to stay at the TB12 complex and just hang there. Nothing more, nothing less. The media caught a sniff of an angle they could use and keep trying to spin Brady is pissed about that, when he clearly is not. It’s nothing more than a simple in-house re-org that doesn’t mean much. It’s not like Guerrero was fired.

    The Garropolo thing is tied to him going 5-0, BB loving Garoppolo, SF lucking out, etc, and them trying to make BB look bad.

    The simple fact is, BB can’t control dumb franchises not wanting Garropolo. IN a nutshell, SF got a Pro Bowl QB for the next 10 years they didn’t have to to develop, but BB was NEVER, EVER dealing Jimmy to an AFC team unless over-whelmed with an offer. Cleveland offered a 1st last spring which is comical. Now, they’re running around with DeShone Kizer, still firing and hiring people.

    So, BB is now responsible for other franchises’ horrendous mismanagement? The guy can’t win, except on the field.

    This is how ridiculous this media obsession has become.

    BB is now responsible or being blamed for 75% of the league in a cap hell, horribly managed, constant rebuilds, etc, due to his greatness, BB’s greatness and Kraft wisely letting BB be a great GM and coach with ZERO interference.

    Other GMs and coaches are SUPREMELY JEALOUS OF THIS.

    And, NE has a 1 seed again, and this is the angle they will try to use to distract them.

    I called it. I just wasn’t sure which angle they’d use officially. Well, they went all in (Guerrero/Brady, Kraft/BB, BB/Brady), and all the media has done is make NE even stronger into the postseason.

    In 2007 it was the Spygate lie to distract, in 2014 it was Deflategate, in 2016, they got Brady suspended for 4 games, so anything on top of that would look too obvious and now we have this.

  78. That Garrapolo trade was a big forget you from Belichick to Kraft. Why would he gotten rid of him? Isn’t Belichick the greatest football coach ever, according to Pats fans?

  79. I feel sorry for all of the Brady/Belichick/Kraft/Patriots haters out there that will have no purpose after those guys hang it up.

  80. Whether there is anything to this story or not, it’s obvious that ESPN is coming out with this now simply to try to become relevant again. But it’s too little, too late. ESPN is dying and they know it. It’s a Hail Mary, a desperation shot from halfcourt at the buzzer. It won’t work, the Patriots will win yet another Super Bowl, and ESPN will continue to slip into oblivion.

    “”If we trade Jimmy, we’re the Cleveland Browns, with no succession plan,” one person inside the building said earlier in the year.”

    LOL

    The way you can tell that is a lie is that Brady still looks like Brady. If Brady looked mediocre or bad, and not in the MVP race, that statement would make sense.

    As if BB can’t find another good prospect in this year’s draft or next?

    I mean, this is all about people people jealous BB has Brady and then just developed Garropolo.

    The real “flaw” here is that JimmyG graduated in in 2014 instead of 2018, based on Brady’s projected retirement timeline.

    That’s it. It’s disappointing sure, and SF gets a stud for the next 10 years, but that’s really all there is to it.

  82. What’s clear from the article, which I think is legit…

    Brady no longer trusts Belichick.
    Belichick no longer trusts Brady.
    Kraft undermined Belichick by making him trade Garoppolo.

    Winning sometimes cures all and that might be the case again here. But it might not… All good things come to an end.

    Yeah, it happens. I think this was the year they had circled on the calendar, and Brady’s Benjamin Button routine screwed it up. It was all lined up with a successor for both coach and QB. The dynasty not missing a beat. That didn’t happen, and of course there is now angst.

    nailed it …

  84. We all know CN…..err i mean BSPN’s agenda so credibility is zero. I’m sure tomorrow we’ll see an article where an unnamed source claims the Pats wants Kaepernick to replace Brady

  85. Its a mistake to believe anything the worldwide joke of sportscasting says, especially about the Pats. They have lied over and over again without remorse or limitation about the wild claims they’ve made about the Pats.

    You sound like Kellyanne Conway…….

    Sure does smack a lot of the arrogance out of the fans of the perfect above it all Patriots……spin spin spin.

  86. Deflategate did not work to stop the Patriots from winning SBs. So now that the team is again on the run for the SB here comes the perfectly timed hit piece to distract the Patriots, from ESPN.

    lol!!!

    one of the funniest things i’ve ever read this side of spygate, deflategate, combines and flophouses and whatever else.

    are you people still waiting on santa claus, too?

    //////////////////////////

    Funny to watch pat fan in denial.

  88. I love this stuff……..since 2001 I have been reading media hype and bore about the demise and doom and gloom of the Patriots and their team.

    Yet since all that time…. we have just gone on to the best team over that time span…….. bar none.

    Look at all these hate posts. Man is sucks that we have been winners all this time. I get your upset and are just giddy over this story… but remember it is a story…not a single real quote…. not a singled named source…….

  89. This is awesome. ESPN did not fail to deliver. The Pats are going to go 1 and done, and then the true flame war will begin.

    Calling it right now, Belichick takes a job at San Jose State and leads that program to 8 consecutive undefeated seasons/national championships.

  90. The timing of the article is just uncanny! Really, ESPN? This story may only serve to anger the Patriots as a whole. It may even produce SB ring # 6. You seriously need to find another team to hate on.

  91. Sounds like another article they will end up applogizing for at 4 am. Newsweak infamously sold for $1 but I have a feeling BSPN will dream of such riches when their breakup comes.

  92. Wow another unnamed source BS article by Wickersham. This dude is the resident fiction writer at ESPN. He takes little facts and make a giant end of the world article. I know when I read him it is like reading opposing fan fiction for the team he is currently writing about.

  93. So…this is a report of a report of a potential ESPN report and there is an unnamed source that disputes part of the potential report while reporting that the potential report will soon be reported by ESPN. Got it. Thanx.

    You have been waiting a long time….wait some more. Oh, and your team will still stink

    So Kraft orders Belichick to trade Garoppolo. That may explain why he came so cheaply to the 49ers. It reminds me of the urban legend of buying a practically new Porche for $1000 because the husband left the wife and he told her to sell it and send him half the money.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Yes, exactly! Just like that Porsche urban legend, it never happened, but that doesn’t stop all the dreamers from talking about it like it did.
  96. Sports fanatics of teams are a curious bunch. They can’t stand ANY sort of criticism of their team/ favorite player at all. Anyone who dares to write anything critical is attacked as a “no nothing”, hack, making things up, a nobody, etc. Some fans think it’s all roses and rainbows with their teams and that the players are perfect model citizens. That’s why they’re so angry and shocked when a critical piece comes out. Their first reaction is to deny and attack.
  97. Just stop using the vacuous platitude that is the term “fake news” as a means of outright dismissing anything contrary to what you want to believe is true. It just makes you appear childish and incapable of objective reasoning.
    Anybody even read ESPN anymore?
    ————————-
    No, readership was way way down. Things have gotten desperate for them, thats why they are doing this. They even had to do a news release on other media sites that this story was coming out so it would get seen. What they are doing is playing the Payriots haters because they are like the gift that keeps on giving.
    Not name calling or anything, but if you read the story, whether he is a ‘know nothing hack’ or not he still has absolutely nothing to base his suggestions on. Its all speculation based on unconfirmed rumors. So whether thats a know nothing hack by todays standards I dont know, but there was once a time when guys only published stories when they had something to back it up.
    And you will notice those taking it as truth and calling anyone that doesnt believe it ‘delusional’ (speaking if name calling) dont have anthing either, they are actually just taking their own wishful thinking and calling it fact its that flimsy.
    Im not going to say its not true because that would also be completely unsubstantiated, I have no source that can prove that. The fact is there is nothing either way. We could move on to a discussion whether Bill Belichick is spending too much time playing Pokemon Go to coach the team effectively and have just as much if a conversation.
  101. Every year at playoff time it’s the same ole thing…a report about the Patriots to try and distract them from concentrating on what they’re supposed to be doing. I’m getting tired of these ESPN printing this junk year in and year out when the playoffs start.
