Jon Gruden looks forward to meeting Marshawn Lynch

One of the central themes of Tuesday’s press conference introducing Jon Gruden as the head coach of the Raiders was how much Gruden loves the Raiders organization.

Gruden said he never wanted to leave Oakland and also professed his love for the city. A love for Oakland and desire to play for the Raiders was also cited by running back Marshawn Lynch as his reasons for returning to the NFL last year, but Lynch’s distaste for interviews means the two men haven’t been able to share these feelings or any others with each other yet.

“You know, I’ve never met Marshawn Lynch. Even as a broadcaster, I asked for Marshawn Lynch in production meetings, and I never got to meet him,” Gruden said.

Gruden said he’s anxious to meet the running back because they came to the team for similar reasons “and guys like him interest me.”

None of that says much about fit in an offensive scheme, but Lynch was frequently the best player on the Oakland offense while running for 625 yards and five touchdowns in the final eight games of the season. His running style didn’t look too different than it did in Seattle as the season went along, something Gruden got to see in Week 16 when he called their loss to the Eagles.

He’s due a $1 million roster bonus — he has a $4 million salary — early in the new league year and the Raiders can move on without a cap hit if the personalties don’t mesh when the two men finally do sit down together.

  1. Wasn’t the point of getting Gruden out of the booth so we all didn’t have to listen to him talk about his grinders or his safari holes or whatever? Can’t wait for him to be muffled by a layer of sunblock 5000 in the Vegas desert.

  2. Gruden never has a bad day. He’s super positive. He tries to find good things to say about everyone. It’s actually quite refreshing, even if it sounds like partial B.S. We live in an era where everyone just goes around ripping each other. Rip Tom Brady. Rip Tiger Woods. I’m sure people are ripping Nick Saban today. Rip Marshawn Lynch. I hope Gruden never changes.

Just make sure you are not standing in the middle of the street Jon

Tierod Taylor, hahaha…Browns, Bengals, Bills have not won a playoff game since 1990-1995, it’s so funny

  4. Was a huge distraction and form of negative energy for Oakland. May have been their best player 1 or 2 times – a difference maker that same amount of times. I saw all his snaps.

  5. To make a further point, i saw lynch harassing a group of advertisers waiting to get into 1 BILLS DR. to sell to russ brandon. with what you say ? a radio controlled truck. he was acting like a jerk. ps-i know it sounds funny.

  6. make sure u have u’re piece with you- he’ll have his skittles – such a good talent with a different attitude-too bad

  7. He ran really well in the second half of the season and finished strong. Don’t know if he will mesh with Gruden, but performance wise he had a good season for a guy who was out of football for a year and thought to be done.

What is even more funny is that your are responding to my post. Was it really funny when Lynch ran over a lady in the middle of the street, and left her there, was a hit and run. Lynch is trash. But go ahead and make fun of the Bills, Bengals and Browns if it makes you feel all grown up, this just in……….The Raiders stink too, 34-16, remember that game earlier in the year………..didn’t think so.

It’s almost like you have no idea that he was famous for his angry scowl before he ever went to MNF to praise every player he sees.

Gruden’s gonna be like Barbara Billingsley in Airplane.

Gee… Wally Great post. I loved Mom in that movie.

  11. If he was “finished” last year, then Frank Gore (not picking on Frank, just using an example) was finished 4 years ago. Just pointing out the lack of objectivity based on personality – which is fine, just admit it. To be fair a couple comments have by saying he isn’t worth the negativity and price for an old back when RBs are cheap. Fair enough. Otherwise there are guys who’ve played for years at worse performance levels than Lynch’s 2015.

Oh yes that terrifying angry scowl of his that had everybody rolling on the floor in laughter. It was so scary, wasn’t it? Lol.

  13. Lynch is a proven locker-room cancer and along with Penn was a major reason why the Raiders regressed from 12-4 to 6-10. Lynch reminds me a lot of players like Anthony Smith & James Trapp from the ’90s Raiders. I’m hoping that the Raiders rebound this year but if the owner forces the Raiders to carry Lynch on the roster again in 2018 then I hold very little optimism about a return to playoff contention.

He can love the city all he wants…
They’re not gonna be there for very much longer.

I kept thinking the same thing the whole time he was saying that.

You do know the Raiders haven’t won a playoff game in 15 years?

  16. I am one of the few people that actually like Jon Gruden but I find it hard to believe that he wanted to be with the Raiders that bad cuz his outrageous salary tells me that the money brought him there which is quite the opposite as Lynch. I think Chuckie is just telling Oakland fans what they want to hear and distract them from the fact that the city is losing their team.

  17. No one is above the team. If everyone stands during the anthem, he must also stand. If everyone answers to the media, he must show his face in the press room. He got his 10,000 yards rushing. I think he may just be done.

  18. After Lynch took up for his ‘cousin’ that plays for the Chiefs over his own Raider teammates, he’s got to go!
