Titans’ Delanie Walker: Everyone expects us to lose, let’s shock the world

Getty Images

The Titans know they’re heavy underdogs in New England on Saturday, and they’re just fine with that.

Titans tight end Delanie Walker said this morning on PFT Live that the Titans are motivated in part to show that they’re not just going to roll over against a heavily favored Patriots team, as they think everyone believes they will.

“Everyone expects us to lose, let’s go out there and shock the world,” Walker said. “Guys have nothing to lose so they’re giving it all they’ve got.”

The Patriots are two-touchdown favorites, meaning most people think not just that the Titans will lose, but that they’ll struggle even to keep it close. Walker and his teammates would love to prove people wrong.

  1. That’s why they play the games! You always have a shot at getting a win, even against the Pats. I still wouldn’t bet on the Titans but it’s better than seeing the Texans get bounced in Foxboro every year.

  2. I would love to see it but it ain’t gonna’ happen Delanie!

You have a better chance at getting hit by lightening or winning the Powerball Lottery than beating the Pats.

  3. As a Patriots fan, I give a lot of credit to the Titans’ win over the Chiefs last weekend. At the end of the first quarter, it looked like a romp for the Chiefs and the halftime score wasn’t any better.

The Titans went into the second half and took control of the game. Derrick Henry got better throughout the game. Mariota played like a stud; the block he threw to ice the game was terrific.

The Patriots are absolutely aware the Titans will be tough and are taking them much more seriously than many writers. I look forward to a good playoff game!

  4. Patriots are very very very vulnerable put your boot on the back of Tom,s neck go in his pockets and take his lunch money then take his Uggs and thrown them up on the roof and tell him don’t get up or you will get Molly whopped ,,period stop he’s just waiting to quit !

  5. I and everyone else will be rooting for the Titans. They should use the speech from “Remember the Titans” before they take the field.

  6. Funny to see all the Titans stuff suddenly popping up around here in E. Tenn.

Same thing happened last season with the Predators lol

  7. I gotta go with the Pats here but it sure would be more fun to see the Titans lay a tough exciting game on them. A Patriots steamrolling would be boring. This is speaking from the standpoint of a fan of the game itself who mostly just wants good viewing pleasure.

  8. I’ll never write off a team in the playoffs. Especially one with a good QB, RB and half decent receivers and a good physical defense.

Anything can happen in the playoffs even Tim Tebow won a playoff game!

  9. not nearly as improbable as people want to make it out to be. Titans have a nice interior push. reminiscent of the Gmen….amnd Thuney is no Logan Mankins.

  10. You never know. It’s not probable but certainly possible.
I think the entire NFL fan base would love to see the Titans in an epic upset. I know I’ll be cheering for them.

  11. Three or four years before Steve McNair became an NFL MVP in his 9th season, he won his teammates over through his toughness, clutch playing (3rd down conversions through the air and on the ground, and game-winning drives), quiet leadership and team first attitude. The Titans were unanimously and vocally following him into battle. Sound familiar? It’s happening right before our eyes–only this time, it’s taken just three seasons. Lead on, Mariota. Lead on.

  12. Zero chance the NFL would ever dream of allowing that to happen in the first place. No way they will let Tammy lose and destroy the ratings match up with Pittsburgh. The NFL is on the NBA level on rigged games especially when it involves making sure their precious patriots advance at any cost, no matter how blatantly rigged it is

  13. .
The Patriots front seven is patchwork quilt composed mainly of misfits and rejects from other squads. The Titans would have to run Derrick Henry 30 times and shorten the game in order to win. If they’re not running successfully in the first quarter, then it’s pretty much over. Mariota versus the Patriots secondary is a mismatch.
    .

  14. Considering their whole offense is Mariota, Henry and Walker, very unlikely. NE is very good at covering TEs and slot guys, and very good at scheming into what a team does well.

Throw in ESPN doing its thing here late in the year, trying to cheat my team again with Goodell, and the Pats will absolutely come out with their hair on fire.

You poked the bear. Now it’s time to pay.

Please state how a 13-3 team in the middle of forming yet another dynasty in the cap era, with the world trying to cheat them every year, the healthiest they’;ve been ALL YEAR, off a Bye, is “vulnerable”:

We’ll be waiting for enlightening response…

  16. CAN’T WAIT! Remember the Dolphins game a few weeks ago? Shock the north part of our country. Us here in Titan Town know we are battle tested for this game.

  17. According tp the boston globe yall are just bums and u small fries in the way of the patriots goin to minny for super bowl dont have a chance at all

  18. As a Patriots fan I wish you luck Titans fans. Honestly. Many of our fans are so spoiled and smug that some of them have forgotten how great it feels to be in your position. “The great unknown” The playoffs is where you make a name for your self. Big stage with everyone watching. It’s euphoric! It’s what sports are all about. Playoff fever to me is a real disease. It’s wonderful. I hope you enjoy every moment of it. There are not many events that you wake up excited and instantly look at the clock and start doing the math to how long to kickoff? Unique experience.

One never knows just how long they may have to wait before you get to enjoy it again. May the best team win. Enjoy the experience!

  19. You already used that card last week, Delanie.

I expect a close first half, and then for the Pats to disembowel Tennessee in the second.

  20. Unfortunately even if they keep it close the refs and Riveron will take care of it like they’ve Been doing all year for the Pats. So the deck is stacked against them

Except everyone does not include the Patriots. The Pats most certainly won’t take this team lightly.

  23. If the Titans keep it close, the referees will become a huge factor in the game.

…in favor of the Pats of course. Like they need any help, Sheesh

It will be the usual blowout. If by a miracle it is close, the refs will make sure the Pats will win!

Again, can you explain how that works?
Do the refs get together before the game and discuss it?
Does someone from the NFL call them and let them know to do it?
Or does Kraft go pay them before the game?

Like they did when they negated the major turnover on Kelce’s fumble?

  27. It’s the NFL and it’s not a cliche that on an any given Sunday ANY team can beat another team….even the Browns….most seasons. ;).

2 things that haven’t been mentioned in these comments are the Titans OL and Dl. The Pats have been forced to play most of the season with a front seven made up of no-name players who are UDFA’s, lpw draft picks and guys they got off of other teams’ scrap heaps. Somehow they have played well enough to help win 13 games, but the best part of the Titan’s offense is their OL, so it will be a tough chore to stop their run game.

Second is the weather. The weather can be a great leveler and reportedly there is severe storm coming on Saturday. So unless the postpone the game, it will be played in pretty messy conditions, so I’m pretty sure the game will be close.

  28. EVERY SINGLE team the Patriots have played this year have been underdogs. True definition is when more teams expect you to lose vs win. Saints, Steelers, Falcons, Chiefs, Panthers…all of them. Don’t take it personal.

If you feel better talking it up in the media, knock yourselves out…but it won’t matter one bit after kickoff.

  29. Rarely are any playoff games cake walks. If Mark Sanchez can win in January Mariota sure as hell can. Pats should win but those saying they can’t lose are wrong. One wrong bounce, one missed tackle or blown coverage and this game is tight.

  31. Anything can happen in the playoffs even Tim Tebow won a playoff game!

A week later Tebow played in New England.

  32. Time for Mike Mularkey to channel his inner Tripper Harrison and give the “It Just Doesn’t Matter!” speech.

Sure….but the coach of the team he beat was Mike Tomlin. The following week BB and the Pats ended his misery and his career.

True but as a longtime fan I know about crushing losses in New England as well.

    2010 Jets 28 Pats 21 (after a regular season Jets 3 Pats 45 win)
    2012 Ravens 28 Pats 13 (a loss as a heavy favourite)
    2009 Ravens 33 Pats 14 (after a regular season Ravens 21 Pats 27 win)

It doesn’t matter who is the favourite if it did then New England would not have beat the Rams in the 2001 Super Bowl season. I’ll only feel comfortable even against the Titans with some great players if there is a big lead in the 4th or at the final whistle and the win is secure.

I don’t have the confidence of some fans who want to predict a blow out win every week when those don’t seem to happen with regularity. New England wins consistently but like coach Belichick I don’t look past the Titans who are in the Divisional round for a reason.

I would put it this way, the Pats are one injury away from losing to the Titans. It ain’t Garoppolo backing up Brady anymore.

  36. All these clowns who get on these boards and predict a Pats loss every week only to be left disappointed and sulking, will one day be right and will say see I told you so. What a bunch of morons. If the Pats win, then of course the fix was in.

What’s wrong with watching a well oiled machine beat up on a playoff caliber opponent? That would be a pretty good game, too.

  38. Patchwork DL they say..ok..only gave up 6 rushing TDs.I get the “anything can happen”bit that they are hoping will happen. But hope does not win games,I guess finally beating the Colts gave the Titans the same feeling as someone eating a snicker bar. But anything can happen like NE playing like normal and Tennessee playing like normal and if that happens Patriots advance like normal.

I seem to recall New England extending his career by bringing him in for a look-see.

  41. The Titans will shock the world when they lose by 40 points to the Patriots. This game will be over by halftime.

  42. When the head official is on your side anything is possible.

And if you want to mention Kelce’s fumble, go ahead and mention the helmet to helmet personal foul that created the fumble.

  43. Revis is no longer on the Pats fellas. He won’t bat down any passes back to the QB or stand around and avoid tackling.

    Oh and…

At the point where Kelce was knocked out, he was a runner. The helmet to helmet contact is not a foul at that point.

  44. I expect New England to come out with a very vanilla game plan on both sides of the ball for the first half. Second half would have to be competitive before they reach into their play off bag of tricks.

  45. Shutting down Gronk and pressurizing Brady consistently will lead to a W. We have the D for the latter but Gronk if healthy is going to be tough. Nevertheless, going to be a good game and definitely not a blowout. Titan Up!!!

Titans you were 9-7 for a reason. How many of those 7 losses were you hoping to win?Anything can happen..blah blah…you need alot of things to happen…Patriots are 32-1 when favored by 13.5 pts or more…Molly Hatchett has a song called”Dreams I’ll never see” and aerosmiths “Dream on”is also a good one.Money is on the nightstand.
