Patrick Mahomes assuming nothing following Alex Smith trade

Alex Smith is still a member of the Kansas City Chiefs and will be until a trade with the Washington Redskins becomes official on March 14, the first day of the new league year.

Until that officially happens, the trade could be called off for any number of reasons. With that in mind, Patrick Mahomes was being cautious with the words he used on Thursday regarding his thoughts on the deal and his role as the presumptive starter moving forward.

I know a ton’s been said over social media and things like that,” Mahomes said, via Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star. “But for me, all I can do right now is just work as hard as I can if any opportunity comes.”

The opportunity is almost certainly coming after the Chiefs traded up to select Mahomes last year and agreed to a deal to Smith, a five-year starter, to Washington earlier this week.

Mahomes showed promise in the preseason and in his only start of the season for Kansas City in Week 17. Mahomes completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards with no touchdowns and an interception in a 27-24 victory over the Denver Broncos.

  1. Future HOFer, and will take the Chiefs to multiple Super Bowls, despite Andy Reid.
Chiefs now have 2 shutdown CBs
    HOfer QB
Best young RB in the game
An O-line that is getting better as a unit each season
A gem at MLB in Reggie Ragland(who the Chiefs stole from buffalo)
The best safety in the game coming back healthy Eric Berry
Oh yea, watch out for KC baby

  2. The Chiefs didn’t trade up to get him so that they could keep him on the bench and watch the other guy go one and done every year in the playoffs. Alex Smith has played 13 seasons in the NFL and has exactly two playoff wins. He’s 2-5 in the playoffs. We all love the underdog, but at some point, coaches are being paid to try to win super bowls.

  3. The Part of the trade that gets overlooked is that the Chiefs are taking a huge risk on this guy after only playing 1 game in the NFL. They really think he’s ready to start?

  4. They should keep him on the bench… Watson, Wentz and Geoff are going back to the bench too. No young QB should be on the field…

For those saying it’s too soon, welcome to the future, you’ve clearly missed the last 3 years of football.

I can see us missing the playoffs next year, since Mahomes has only played in one game. I’d be ok with that, too, but he has to get more game reps in order to get better. He’s now a redshirt rookie, which is better than him simply being a rookie and throwing him to the wolves.

Only time will tell what talent he has at this level and if moving on from Alex was the right move. If nothing else, we actually rolled the dice on a top rated QB in the draft, which is what Chiefs fans have been screaming for for a loooong time.

  6. No need for John Manziel Jr. to talk now. His play will say enough week 1 when throwing off his back foot into triple coverage all the while running around like a chicken with its head cutoff. Chieps Kingdom!

  7. He has an incredible arm, but be prepared for ups and downs with him.

Still, this is the right move. Alex Smith is a Good QB, but he can only take a team so far.

Wow.. Mahomes has started 1 game and he is already Hall of Fame material huh?

The chiefs do not have the best young RB in the game, the best safety, or best secondary in the NFL, stop it. Every year Chiefs fans are delusional…
