Chiefs weren’t interested in trading Alex Smith to Broncos

Kansas City has agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to Washington. But there’s one quarterback-needy place the Chiefs wouldn’t have considered sending Smith to: Denver.

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver that trading Smith to a division rival wouldn’t have served the Chiefs’ interests.

“I think it’s pretty typical in the NFL not to seek trades within the division,’’ Hunt said. “That’s pretty standard fare particularly when we’re talking about a high-profile player.’’

There had been some speculation that Denver could have traded cornerback Aqib Talib and a draft pick to get Smith, similar to the package Washington sent (cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick) in the trade the two teams agreed upon. But the Talib speculation doesn’t make a lot of sense: The Chiefs are near the bottom of the league in available cap space in 2018, and Talib has an $11 million base salary. The Chiefs liked Fuller because he’s under contract for two more years at $700,000 a year. That’s the kind of player a team in bad cap shape needs to acquire.

But it sounds like the Chiefs wouldn’t have sent Smith to Denver no matter what the Broncos offered. Teams do sometimes trade players within their division (Philadelphia shipping Donovan McNabb to Washington comes to mind), but the Chiefs like being on top of the AFC West while the Broncos struggle to find a quarterback, and Kansas City doesn’t want to put a starting quarterback in Denver.

  1. I suspect Denver will make a huge offer to Philly for Foles. They have a legit defense, a decent o-line, a good running game as well. Mix in some RPOs and Denver is back in the hunt for the AFC title.

I’d like to think the Philly FO keeps Nick here in Philly. But, I believe if Foles wants a starting job they’ll send him where he wants, assuming they can get decent value.

As an Eagles fan, I want Foles to stay here. I hope he wants to as well.

After his performance in the playoffs and Super Bowl, Foles is going to want a starting gig and he’ll likely get one. He’ll be hot like JimmyG was and if he doesn’t take advantage of this now, he’ll lose a lot of dollars and leverage. Chances are this is his last chance for a big payday. He would probably like to stay in Philly as the starter, but as long as Wentz recovers well that won’t happen.

  3. As long as Wentz is good to go Philly would be crazy for not taking advantage of trading Foles. They clear up needed cap space and probably get at least a 2nd rounder in return. I get that Wentz’ style of play makes him more prone to getting hurt than other QB’s, but you cant worry about that. If Foles were on year 2 of his rookie deal Id say keep him…but thats not the case.

  4. Just watched a video of doug pederson and he said the reason foles said philly special was because doug pederson gave him a code on his wristband before the Gabe and once that particular code was whispered into foles headset that code was another way of saying philly special so it was doug who came up with that play foles just asked doug to reaffirm that he wanted that play called

  6. trading a good (not great) quarterback to a division rival that may win the division if only they have a good quarterback is definitely not a good idea. KC needs a CB because they may have to let Marcus Peter go if they cannot agree to terms with him.

  8. lol, Denver doesn’t need Chiefs “leftovers”.

Funny reading the line the Chiefs like being on top of the AFC West while the Broncos struggle to find a quarterback”. What good is it to be on top divisionally only to consistently fall short of the ultimate goal of the Super Bowl?! Broncos/Bronco fans expect to make it to Super Bowls while the Chiefs really haven’t even sniffed one since the late 1960s…

  9. Alex Smith is a high profile player? Thts news to me. The guy can’t win in the playoffs. Andy Reid traded a much higher profile player to a division rival in Philly when he traded McNabb to the Redskins. Isn’t it frustrating when facts don’t align with narratives?

  10. No way will Philly trade Foles. Wentz will return sometime in September and no one knows the condition of his two injuries. Maybe he won’t be able to start the new season. If any trade is made, Wentz should be the one on the block…no one knows if his recovery will be full, and any team trading for Wentz will be going after damaged goods that may not be able to play like he did before. He likes to escape the pocket and mobilize. And he puts himself more into harm’s way by doing so. No thank you; Wentz is younger, but Foles is wiser. I’d keep Foles.

  11. I guess the current Chiefs would rather lose in the playoffs, never making the Super Bowl, rather than trading within division and never making it into the playoffs. I suppose it makes some sense.

  12. Denver should definitely get Foles. He’s proved he’s better than Brady on the biggest stage so Pats wouldn’t be an issue for them.

  13. Smith is 10x better than any QB on the Broncos roster. No reason to make a division rival better. Make them do that on their own.

They have a lousy offensive line, and a mediocre running game and Von Miller, Chris Harris, Aqib Talib and little else!”

But we have 3 Super Bowl Rings and we can win games in the playoffs.
What do the Chiefs have other than annual disappointment…..????

  15. Smith’s contract = $17M
    Talib’s contract = $11M
Chiefs gain $6M in cap space – tell us again how the trade “doesn’t make sense” due to Chiefs needing cap space? Done deal so it really doesn’t matter – so why speculate nonsense?

Thats exactly why a run & pass system – what Foles has proven to be ELITE as (did it under Chip Miller too) And, his ability to go long – with 2 elite WR’s is perfect. Agree they need to get a solid RB and OL

  17. Broncos fan here. I hope Elway does not tie the future of the team to Foles. He had a nice run in the playoffs, but that does not mean he is a savior. I guess if we could get him cheapish (cheaper than Cousins) and draft one of the kids at 5, I would be okay with that.
