Boston Herald looking into hoax, pulls Ron Borges column

Getty Images

It’s been a rough morning for Boston Herald columnist Ron Borges.

Borges believed he had a major scoop in today’s paper: A column citing unnamed “sources” close to Tom Brady saying that Brady was ready to hold out of offseason work if the Patriots didn’t give him a significant pay raise, comparable to the contract the 49ers just gave Brady’s former backup Jimmy Garoppolo. But then WEEI revealed that one of its listeners had hoaxed Borges with a text purporting to be from Brady’s agent, and that the whole premise of Borges’ column was bogus.

PFT checked with the Boston Herald‘s sports editor, Sean Leahy, who told us, “We’re looking into it.”

Meanwhile, the Boston Herald has pulled Borges’ column off its website, which strongly suggests that they’ve already concluded that “looking into it” is something that Borges failed to do when he got the text.

Borges cited “sources,” plural, in his column saying that Brady would hold out, but it appears that Borges was relying on only one source, and that one source was a prankster who fooled him. Borges has a history of poor journalistic practices, including an instance of plagiarism that precipitated his departure from the Boston Globe. We’ve caught Borges copying and pasting from PFT without credit in the past. Now he has egg on his face again.

  1. Lets not forget, these are the same writers and news paper who said the the Patriots had taped the Rams practice before the Superbowl.
It all turned out to be a lie, no wonder the Boston Herald is in bankruptcy procedure.

  2. Might be a hoax but aside from that its funny how the Patriots call Tom the GOAT and pay him half of what his old back up is paid who hasn’t played but 6 games.

  3. So lazy. How much effort would it take Wrong Borges the notec plagiarist to check the phone number on the text to see if it really was Yee?

    See ya Wrong. 🙂

  4. Wrong Borges got what was coming to him a few days after the Colts got theirs.

Patriots fell just short in the Super Bowl but other than that… this week has been delicious!

    🙂

  5. I’m not familiar with his work, but it sounds like he’d be better off on sports-talk radio than in print.

  6. The story itself may be a hoax but you have to believe that Brady can’t be happy seeing a guy like Garoppolo get a huge deal while he’s making about $14 million a year.

  7. Borges has been out to get the Patriots for decades, ever since he broke that bogus drugs story on the 86 Patriots. The Boston Globe fired him for plagiarizing his material and I can’t believe the Herald was dumb enough to pick him up. His career should have been over years ago

  8. He is basically Kent from Real Genius; if you put a little receiver in his braces he will believe anything you say.

  9. Borges is on solid ground here though. He cited unnamed sources so he did not lie. This is true of really anything that cites unnamed sources that it need not be true.

  10. This is how the news works for the most part. Hear one person say something and go with it. No fact checking just straight to print. GET YOUR FACTS TOGETHER THEN WRITE ABOUT IT.

Nah, Borges has made a few appearances on WEEI and he was terrible.

  12. Borges is a deranged moron, and should have never been rehired after the Globe canned him. I’ve personally had email arguments with him over politics, trust me when say the guys is unhinged. And he HATES the Pats.

  13. Herald is the bspn of Boston. They’ve had no real source at the Pats since they lied and made the false claim the Pats had taped other team’s walk throughs, which even though they printed a huge retraction and apology is still quoted by idiots today as fact

Borges is a plagiarist and liar who hates Belichick and the Pats, hilarious to see him get caught by a prank like this

And for a few hours the poor Pats haters were all tingly and excited and now can go back to sullenly posting

  14. Borges is an awful journalist. His goal since BB was hired has been to say anything he can to reflect negatively on Bill and the Patriots. He isn’t the least bit concerned whether it is true or not, as long as it gets Patriots fans riled up. He should be fired and kicked off the HOF voting committee. Here is a replay of one of his classics, evaluating the Patriots 2001 draft:

“On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sack last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

Im even over the Superbowl loss. It just means next years run is that much more exciting and its not like we dont have a ton of thise things already. (it would be boring if they were automatic to win them all) The thrill of sport is in the hunt, not the celebration.

So in your world being paid top dollar is more important than getting quality pieces all around you and helping your team win 5 titles, while dominating and going deep in the playoffs every single year. That’s why your team blows.

  17. Sports talk radio in Boston has enough know-it-all knuckleheads…we don’t need to add Borges to the lineup. As Don Imus used to say…”it’s dog track time” for Ron…see ya!

Full credit to the Patriots for getting away with this for years. But I’m sure if Brady wasn’t married to Gisele they wouldn’t.

I guess when teams scout players they better start considering if these guys are dating or married to supermodels that already get paid millions and let teams underpay the player. Haha.

  19. one of the biggest problems in society today is the rush to be “first” in reporting to social media. it causes many of the guilty until proven innocent beliefs that have become damning for people.

  20. What a fitting end for a Boston sports columnist who spent the entire golden era of Boston sports (5 Super Bowl wins, 8 appearances, 3 World Series wins, 1 NBA title, 2 appearances, 1 Stanley Cup win, 2 appearances) spewing negativity toward everyone involved. A miserable, joy sucking, plagiarizing, condescending troll. The only thing that stinks about it is listening to Stern wannabe Kirk Minihane gloat. Prediction: Kirk will go down the same way someday.

  21. “Ron Borges is a good man of high character. We rely on him to help us with all of our staff secretary background checks.”

  22. What a dunce, as well as being ethically challenged. Brady has never showed an interest in being the top-paid QB, but all of a sudden that changes? Even if Borges regularly relies on just one source (and lies about it), that tip should have smelled funny enough that Borges would have wanted to be careful with it.

  23. Downside of all the Herald bashing (deservedly so) is that Jeff Howe is a fantastic writer and follow for all things Patriots. Hoping none of this stink rubs off on his reputation.

  24. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Borges is smarter than Belichick, and he can provide multiple sources to verify it !!

The Herald lost Tomase and picked up Borges to insure no shortage of slime oozing out of their orifices.

  25. One thing Borges didn’t lie or plagiarize is how Philly’s Backup lead them to beating the GOAT and the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

  26. ” its funny how the Patriots call Tom the GOAT and pay him half of what his old back up is paid who hasn’t played but 6 games.”

You realize that Brady has chosen to make less so he could have better depth around him don’t you? And that’s one of the reasons the Pats have made it to 8 Super Bowls in 16 years?

No ? Too busy disliking Brady and the Pats to understand the actual facts of the matter?

  27. This story has already been floated on numerous national sites, so lots of people will not hear the retraction.

    Sound familiar?

It will be forever cited as fact by trolls everywhere, like “taping a walk-through” is, though IT NEVER HAPPENED.

  28. I’m hoping that the Garoppolo trade to S.F. was also a hoax. PFT please investigate further. Otherwise, we must hold onto the hope that doubleB can turn the S.F. pick into the next Jordan Richards.

  29. The new media: Rush out there with a rumor. Post on website…Tweet it ….Blast it all over TV …

Then, when it’s proven to be fake news, slink away as if nothing ever happened.

Apologize for any damage caused by their haste — and greed — to get clicks and ratings? Not their MO.

They are, after all, THE MEDIA.

  30. I’m far from a Pats fan, but Brady is probably content to get paid great money, and still afford the team cap space to sign more quality players instead of a guy that they can just “afford”. With Brady’s GQ looks and level headedness, he will/is making as much or more money from non-playing related activities. I’m not saying that I think he would play for the league minimum, but I do think his main motivation is to win championships. I certainly can’t fault the guy for wanting to win…

As opposed to the Boston Globe (owned by the Boston Red Sox) who absolutely hates the Patriots and can’t stand it that nobody cares about the Red Sox anymore. More people care about the Bruins and Celtics than the Red Sox these days. The Red Sox still have a lot of casual fans, but those fans are nothing like Bruins or Patriots fans.

  32. “You can tell if a person is brainwashed if they think cnn is better than fox”

Actually you can tell if a person is brainwashed if they believe anything Fox News says.

  33. What should happen in this case is that Roger Goodell should hire an independent investigator. The investigator should demand Tom Brady’s cell phone to make sure the text was not from his phone. I mean …. what’s the worst that could happen?

  34. Can’t believe the Herald wouldn’t have an official number for Yee to use to confirm this “scoop”.

Unnamed sources play an important role in legitimate journalism, but they’re still supposed to be confirmed by somebody behind the scenes – reporter, editor, someone.

  35. This became apparent a while ago, but any negative article about the Patriots that relies solely on anonymous or unnamed sources should include a disclaimer that there’s a good possibility those stories are made up.

  36. I’ve never seen a sports town with so many enemies right in their own backyard.. The Patriots get more balanced coverage in Indianapolis than they get in Boston.

Might be a hoax but aside from that its funny how the Patriots call Tom the GOAT and pay him half of what his old back up is paid

The Patriots, Belichick and Brady have understood for years what other teams and key players don’t, and it’s obvious. You cannot pay everybody and have the depth and balance to consistently compete for championships over a long period of time. You have to have institutional discipline. I’m still blown away every time the Pats insert a back of the roster guy in a starting position due to injury or pick up a key part to get to another Super Bowl. You have to have a great coaching staff and financial flexibility to do that, and then, frequently be right on your acquisitions.

You also have to have Brady. I get that part and we’ve been extremely lucky there. He’s been the ultimate team guy—opposite of most superstars.

It will be interesting to watch how the Eagles proceed here. My guess is they’ll have a 2-3 year window, and then predictably, guys will leave for more money elsewhere because you can’t pay them all, and you’ll slowly see the success flatten out. The NFL is designed specifically to not allow dynasties, and in the face of that, the Patriots have had the longest one of all time.

It’s unbelievably remarkable what they’ve done when you consider how hard it is to do in this era.

  38. I don’t get the photo? I want to get the joke like everyone else. I’m 99.999% sure that is not RB in your photo. So what’s the joke I’m missing?

    **********************************

Coming from a Dolphin fan who’s team overpays for Tannehill and Cutler, this is absolutely priceless. So, according to you – the more you pay your QB the better the team does? I can pretty much cite 31 examples over the last 16 years where that isn’t true, but hey, don’t let the facts get in your way of hating on the Pats.

Good luck next year with Miami going 4-12 and ending up in last place in the AFCE.

  40. n e 1 that thinks brady isn’t compensated under the table is a fool. kraft has plenty of ways to keep tommy boy the highest paid qb under the table. makes brady look like a martyr.

  41. Maybe the Drudge Report, Fox News or Breitbart has a job for him. Sounds like their kinda guy. Wrong media outlets..You meant ABC-NBC, CBS, MSNLSD, and CNN. Please they lie and mske stuff up all day long.

  42. I say this without any political agenda, for or against any side. Sports is the great escape from all of that….

The ability to manipulate an eager media entity into publishing an unverified but “hot” story is too easy, and in more serious venues destructive to our way of life.

OK – off my soapbox. Love the NFL – Great sport.

If that’s what you want to call a hoax they had nothing to do with, then fine. We’ve seen a few of those perpetrated already—it doesn’t stop the winning.

Watch for the Patriots to not be affected by any of this like other teams would and still have a great year with a legit shot at the title. Most disciplined organization in sports, and clearly always the #1 story no matter what other teams are up to.

It’ll most likely change when “system” guy Tom Brady steps down, but that’s at least 2 years away. We’ll see what the “system” is able to accomplish without him.

Looks like a reference to Stephen Glass, who fabricated a lot of his stories.

  48. Why are reporters so eager to make Tom Brady look bad? I get that part of being a superstar is more scrutiny, etc but this guy, for his stature, has proven over and over again that he should at least get the benefit of the doubt. Nothing about this story sounded like Tom Brady.

  49. BTW with his signing bonus Brady averages 22 million a year.. the 14 or 15 million are stories the local media love to push.

Because it generates revenue. Just look at all of the bozos around here that foam at the mouth whenever anything even tangentially related to the Patriots gets mentioned.

  52. Tom Brady has willingly accepted team friendly contracts on the understanding that it would be used to fill out the rosters giving him less money but more opportunities for success. That’s something that I’ve always admired about him. Why anyone would see a story like that and not immediately question it’s accuracy is beyond me.

  53. Maybe the Drudge Report, Fox News or Breitbart has a job for him

Over the last couple of years there have been stories retracted and apologies made, but it ain’t from the organizations you listed.

    Guess who.

Ron Borges is the only one that committed fraud, when he printed a story without any due diligence whatsoever. He even lied about the number of sources.
