Report (a/k/a false report): Brady will skip OTAs unless he gets paid like Jimmy G

[Editor’s note, 9:37 a.m. ET: The following story was based on an article published by the Boston Herald. The Herald has since retracted the story without explanation. Apparently, the retraction happened because the source for the story was a prankster who was pretending to be Tom Brady‘s agent, Don Yee. Multiple other stories at ProFootballTalk.com address the situation, which as of this update continues to develop and evolve.]

The GOAT wants to get paid accordingly. Reportedly.

Ron Borges of the Boston Herald reports that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has decided to get compensated in a way that he never really has. Citing unnamed “sources close to” Brady, he is “ready to sit out all of this year’s offseason organized team activities unless he receives a contract extension that carries with it up-front money similar to what his former protege, Jimmy Garoppolo, will receive from the San Francisco 49ers.”

It’s unclear what “up-front money” means. Signing bonus? Full guarantees at signing? Something else?

Brady currently is due to make $14 million in 2018 and 2019, the final two years of his current deal. He consistently has gotten new contracts that trigger praise for “taking less” while always getting plenty of “up-front money.” His latest contract, signed in 2016, paid him $28 million to sign. The contract before that one paid $30 million to sign.

He’s never had to make a power play to get paid, and it’s odd to think that Brady already has drawn a line in the sand, only five days after Super Bowl LII, about his next contract. Besides, if he’s going to make a power play, wouldn’t it be much better to say he’ll simply retire?

Some in league circles believe that Brady made that threat in order to ensure that the Patriots keep offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Borges hints at dynamic, writing that McDaniels’ retention “was in part orchestrated by Brady’s insistence he be retained as head coach-in-waiting.”

Here’s the other thing that doesn’t make sense here. It hasn’t been all that long since Seth Wickersham of ESPN.com painted a picture of the Brady-Garoppolo relationship that had everything but a mirror, mirror on the wall. Brady would confirm the notion that he had a bizarre obsession with Garoppolo if Garoppolo’s contract suddenly sparked Brady, who consistently takes less, to suddenly want more — and to use Garoppolo’s deal as the comparison.

Borges may eventually be able to say “I was right” on this one because the Patriots are likely to give Brady a new deal before the starts of OTAs. And there surely will be a way to interpret the details of the two deals and argue that Brady indeed got “up-front money similar” to Garoppolo, since Brady already may have twice gotten “up-front money” as good or better than Garoppolo’s new deal. Still, it seems like a bit of a stretch to think that Brady would specifically demand to be paid like any other quarterback, since he’s never taken that position a single time in his 18-year career, regardless of who at any given money was getting paid more than him.

UPDATE 7:00 a.m. ET: Um. Yeah.

UPDATE 8:12 a.m. ET: Here’s more on the situation. Borges apparently was duped.

  1. Consider the source…..then ignore the story. This is not how Brady operates.
This is how the author Ron Borges operates. Google Ron Borges. Ain’t pretty.

  2. Brady is starting to sound more like a prima donna than he ever has before. No wonder Belichick wants to retire. Captain Tom is running the show.

  3. Jimmy Garoppolo money is dumb on 49ers. He may be the next greatest but really hasnt proven a thing, reminds me of the Scott Mitchell deal long ago when most of you guys were in diapers crapping yourselves. Scott played couple games at the end of the season for the injured Marino and Dumbass Detroit won the bid out foxing the Vikings lol missed that speeding bullet. Cant Blame Pretty Boy Brady on this one. The owners must be pissed at the 9ERS….Is that Ted Dork ? I mean York

  4. And, he just got his back up traded. So now he has ALL the leverage! They no longer have an heir apparent in waiting. It will be a year or two before they are ready to take over. Well played (still a d ick move.)Mr.Brady.

  5. Sounds like more speculative baloney. Do sports writers even try anymore, or do they go straight to their imaginations for stories? Sad.

  6. Poor guy. I guess he figures if he can’t get the kind of love that true american hero Nick Foles is getting, he might as well cash out. Hard to blame the kid. Get your money now before Wentz beats you in the next Super Bowl.

  7. There is no reason whatsoever to believe anything about the Patriots when the report comes from the Boston Herald. Ron Borges isn’t even an NFL guy- second only to John Tamasse in manufacturing stories.

  8. Of course Florio the Boston homer casts aspersions upon the credibility of this story. Funny that he never does that with all of the other rumor based articles out there. Can’t wait to watch the Patriots unravel this year an then in a major way post-Belichick.

  9. WEEi is already saying it was a bogus story. They are talking to some Andy now who says he portrayed Don Yee Brady’s agent.

  10. Hahaha. Oh, the cracks in Cheaterville are wide open and telling.
Billicheat cementing himself as a loser unless he can see the walk through.
Brady having a weird man crush, making sure the cheat secrets stay in NE with McD.
And now Jimmy G making Brady jealous.

    What’s next?

  11. This is why the Pats should have kept Garapollo. As great as Brady is he is getting old, the Super Bowl showed it. While his brain is still functioning at a high level his physical skills are diminishing. Now we get the drama which can’t be good for the team. First it was his personal trainer thing, then the forced Jimmy G trade and now this.

  12. If I was NE I would pay Brady, he is all you got. He isn’t why the Pats lost the SB. Also, the Niners will soon find out that they vastly overpaid for Jimmy. They will scratch their heads wondering why the miracle boy wonder won the last five games of the season, then nothing after. I will tell you why. It’s because nobody took the Niners seriously by the end of the year, and rightfully so.

  13. Another report from unnamed sources are saying that Brady is willing to cut his salary significantly so can sign all the top free agents. Various other unnamed sources are citing several top qbs that say they are willing to play as a back up for short money for a couple years so they can be in line for the starting slot in NE. There is an unnamed source that Odell Beckam would sign for less money to play for the Patriots and have the best shot at a ring, these sources say his antics are to encourage the Giants to let him go. There is also an unnamed source that says Leveon Bell is trying to price everyone else away and plans to sign for less money with the Patriots for best chances at a ring. There are also unnamed sources that say several unnamed defensive players are maneuvering to get onto the Patriots roster. BTW, I too am an unnamed source.

  14. The Garapolo contract will start a series of these. Rogers has to get $40 million. Ryan = $35 million, and so on. The 49er’s screwed up the QB pay scale by giving a guy with 6 games the highest QB contract ever.

  15. I get the feeling the Patriot Dynasty that really became was born 13 years ago when they beat Philadelphia for their 3rd championship in 4 years is now coming to an end. All good things come to the end and this Dynasty that already beat the test of times will come to an end to. Funny if you think about it when Philly played them in 04/05 they played Min in divisional round and Atlanta in NFC Championship and then lost to the Patriots in the Superbowl in which solidifying them as a dynasty. This year was the opposite, they played Atlanta in divisional round, Minny in the NFC Championship, and then they beat the Patriots in the Superbowl and perhaps ending them as a dynasty? Who knows for sure how it plays out but it is kind of the feeling that I get that they are done.

  16. Another example of the NE “dynasty” splitting apart at the seams. Brady got Jimmy G traded, now he wants more money or he’ll take his (deflated) balls and go home.

An amazing fall from grace for this “icon” over the past few years – and it’s only going to get worse.

  17. “Unnamed sources” are just reporters talking among themselves. The public is catching on as this nonsense has spread from politics to sports coverage.
    #FakeNews

  18. They should just release him. He’s well past his prime, running to try to catch that pass he looked like he should belong in a retirement home.

  19. Oh report’s says. must be espn putting a spin on this. Brady will be getting paid long after hes gone i realy dont think this deep in his career he wants more money try againe haters

  20. Such obvious fake news…yawn.
At least make it fun – Brady demamds the ability to fly and the power of invisibility or he will skip offseason..

  21. Unnamed sources close to Brady tell me he is going to file a lawsuit against the Patriots organization so he can get out of his contract. Then he will sign with the Buffalo Bills organization as the unnamed source says Brady is “Bills Mafia 4 life squad fam.”

  22. .
    Two questions to ask :

    1. Based upon your own knowledge of the Kraft-Brady father and son like relationship, does it make sense to you that Brady is issuing broadcast ultimatums five days post Super Bowl? Is there anyone who doesn’t think Kraft would give him a raise but for the asking?

    2. Garopollo and Brady share the same agent, Don Yee. The Patriots did Yee and Garopollo a huge solid by trading him to the 49ers early enough to make about 80 million more than he would have had the Patriots retained his rights. Since Yee has been finalizing Jimmy G’s contract, it’s doubtful that he has spent much time on Brady’s contract at this point. Would it make sense to you for the Brady-Yee camp to go to defcon one and start firing public salvos at the Patriots? What’s to gain?
    .
Ron Borges – where bs meets malarkey
    .

  23. Borges is a proven fraud. We in Boston know better than to trust a word that comes out of his mouth. Don’t believe a word he says. You have been warned….

  24. Brady knows Belichick has proven he can win without him…

What Brady doesn’t know is if he can win without Belichick…

And fans who understand football know this is the last remaining fact left to argue against Brady being the best ever…

The same questions were posed about Bill during Brady’s injury and suspensions…and Bill answered!

  25. Is it that he wants to get paid, or that he is jealous of the money Jimmy G got when he left? Or is this just a made up “sources close to Brady”, slow news story?

  26. Whaddayaknow? The Boston Herald is already retracting Borges’ Brady piece. No surprise, here. You just keep being you, Borges. Can you even spell “journalism”?.

  27. Unnamed sources close to the owners say that there are talks of merging the Eagles and the Patriots into a superteam that can be moved to London for kickstarting the European market.

  28. “Isn’t getting fished into something like this grounds for termination?”

There’s a part of me that really does feel sorry for him.

But he’s been a one-tick pony hack for years, and this is non-feasance on an unacceptable and inexcusable level. He’s got to get fired, and he’s really go no one to blame but himself. He saw something that he wanted to be true and he wrote it and they printed it, and he had nothing to back it up except a set of text messages that claimed to be from someone. Absolutely and completely inexcusable…

  29. Icons of FAKE SPORTS NEWS….
    1- John Tomasi
    2- Chris Mortenson
    3- Bob Patzer
4- Ron Borges…. and the only reason he is 4th is because the other three are ridiculously bad. All four should be fired from any reputable news agency and be banished to writing for dead spin or TMZ… that is the amount of integrity each of them have.

  30. Putting “taking less” in quotations is a pretty turd thing to do (as it implies that he doesn’t actually take less). Here are Tom Brady’s cap hit rankings among QBs, in order, from 2011 to 2017: 7th, 16th, 5th, 11th, 14th, 18th, 19th. On average over this period, Brady has ranked 13th(!!!) among QBs in cap hit, and his rank has declined for 4 straight seasons. Even without this offseason having happened yet (so some QBs will likely leap on to this list), Brady’s cap hit rank for 2018 right now is set to be just 8th. No matter how you slice it, TOM BRADY TAKES LESS MONEY THAN HE COULD. No quotes or qualification needed.

So hope that you actually did, now that those who don’t overreact know the whole story.

    ——–

Lots of people eating a lot of crow on this thread…. But this post takes the cake.

Brady threw for over 500 yards and 3 TDs in the SB with 0 interceptions. Every team wishes they had a QB who looked so “old”!

Even local media is turning on the Patriots now.

How perfectly synergistic. That’s not news. Borges and Tomase have been dicks to the Pats for a long long time. Only natural that after a story like this someone comments on something about which they have no clue.

  35. Forget Brady. If Garoppolo is making what the 49ers are paying him, how much will Carson Wentz be getting from the Eagles when his rookie deal expires?
