Vikings announce John DeFilippo is their new offensive coordinator

Getty Images

After doing a great job as the position coach for Carson Wentz and Nick Foles, John DeFilippo is moving up in the coaching ranks.

The Vikings have announced that DeFilippo is their new offensive coordinator. DeFilippo spent the last two years as the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia.

“We are very excited to add John to our staff,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said in a statement. “We took our time with the search and made sure we left no stone unturned to get the right fit. He has a track record of success and has proven to be a great teacher. We feel John will have good chemistry with our team and we are all eager to get to work.”

The Eagles’ offensive coaches, including head coach Doug Pederson and offensive coordinator Frank Reich, all deserve a lot of credit for their Super Bowl season. But there’s been some talk in football circles that DeFilippo deserves the most credit of them all for the way he took a young quarterback in Wentz and made him an MVP candidate, then took a castoff backup in Foles and made him a Super Bowl MVP.

It’s unclear who the Vikings’ starting quarterback will be in 2018, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them contact the Eagles about trading for Foles. But whoever it is, he’ll be playing in a quarterback-friendly offense.

  1. That’s nice.
So. What team in the AFC North/South will he be the head coach of in 2020?

We do have some weapons in a Diggs, Theilen, Rudolph, Cook and Murray.
    O-line is decent when healthy.
    Welcome aboard.

  2. Not sure that many of us, or any of us for that matter, really know how much of an impact he had on the qb’s aside from that of the O.C and H.C. But by all accounts, he is a very good coach and was expected to climb the ladder sooner rather than later. Glad we had him for a short time and wish him well with his career.

  3. I thought he wasn’t going to leave? That he was turning down the promotion to stay in that great situation? You know … like all the free agents that are going to sign there for the minimum.

  4. Something bothers me about him being JaMarcus Russell’s QBs coach and a coordinator for the Browns. It also bothers me that he was Carson Palmer’s QB coach for the Raiders and Mark Sanchez’s QB coach in NY. The guy is 1 for 5. Oh well, maybe he will convince the Vikes to trade their 1st again to Philly for Foles.

  5. Flip is a very good coach. No doubt about it. Congrats to the Vikes for getting him. However, he actually needs a QB to run the offense and right now they don’t have one. Further, you need a good QB to make him great with Flip. They can forget about Foles. The Eagles will want a 1 and another high pick (probably a 3) for Foles. I don’t see the Vikings doing that again after Bradford. That resulted in the guy who recovered Brady’s fumble. So far, a lopsided trade in the Eagles favor.

  6. Good luck in Minnesota Flip, but you are going to have to do it with Teddy or Case……….we are not giving you Foles.
Not going to trade him to the very team we had to beat to get to the Super Bowl in the first place. Besides, he’s the best Carson Wentz insurance policy there is.
Good thing it’s Howie doing the trading and not Andy Reid.

  7. Vikings should not go with Foles. If they want that type of QB, just keep Keenum. My guess, Keenum & Bradford are gone, Cousins comes in with Teddy as the back-up.

  8. I was hoping the Eagles would be able to keep this coaching staff together another year or two but good luck to him.

Let’s hope the Colts don’t grab another coach from us.

  9. Nice job Vikings brass. You got your guy. Now it’s time to establish the QB rotation and begin the process of solidifying the offense for the long term.

  10. While the Eagles would like more picks in this year’s draft, it is NOT a necessity. They are deep in almost every position as they clearly proved by winning a SB without their QB. LT, MLB and all purpose, special weapon, back. Further, they took the hardest road possible to get there – defeated the defending conf champs, defeated the best D in football and took out the dynasty. So, they will certainly entertain offers for Foles but a team would have to blow the Eagles away.

  11. this always happens – a team wins and all the coaches are suddenly geniuses. No matter what their previous record shows. DeFilippo has been a QB coach in the NFL since 2007, with one year as a Off Coordinator in Clev in 2015. Before this past year no offence he’s ever been a part of has been better than 16th in pts scored. 6 of the 8 he were 23rd of worse.

It’s the same with Schumer – everyone thinks he’s a genius now because the Vikings scored a lot of points with a backup QB. Guess what when you are surrounded by good talent both the QB and coach look a lot better.

Coaches almost never matter. I do believe they can be awful, you got to avoid the really awful ones, but I see almost no evidence that coaches make much difference at all.

GMs are a different story, they sometimes see advantages in acquiring talent before the rest of the league catches up.

  12. I am surprised he didn’t wait to see if the Colts hired Reich. That would have put him in position to be the coordinator in Philly, which would seem to be at least a little better situation given the uncertainty at QB in Minnesota.

  13. I was hoping Howie and Doug could convince everyone to come back for one more year and go for the repeat, honestly. But, I guess you can’t keep em all. Good luck, and thanks, Flip!

  14. Vikings will go for Foals, let the other 3 walk. May try to toll Bridgewater for another year at backup. Vikies will get skinned for another 1st rounder or 2nd 4th and 6th for him.
Bradford will end on on a QB desperate team that will get him pounded into retirement. Teddy will either languish a backup or bounce around for a few years trying to work in bad situations. Wouldn’t mind to see him play again, he is a good kid.
Vikings had better address depth on OL and Def at corner positions.

  15. I hope we don’t have to listen to a month of speculation that the Vikings could trade for Foles. Nick Foles is Case Keenum with a ring. I need to see more than 2.5 good games to think that Foles is a better answer for the Vikings than any of the three quarterbacks they have now, which wouldn’t cost any draft capital to retain. A team with no options at quarterback might give up a second-round pick for Foles but the Vikings shouldn’t have to do that. They hired DeFilippo because he’s good at working with quarterbacks, not because he only knows how to work with Nick Foles. My guess is they’re excited to see what he can do with Bridgewater.

  16. I think this is a huge loss for my Eagles but a great place for Flip. Now if Zimmer can find somebody else that knows defense. 38pts. Lol.

  17. This might be the most Vikings thing ever.

“We feel John will have good chemistry” with the QB that we haven’t decided on yet.

One can’t have good chemistry until all of the elements are in place. Nice try, though.

  18. Long time Eagles fan here! DiFelippo is an excellent hire for The Vikings. Your Abs will improve significantly. Shurnur was also very good but DeFilippo is younger and more in touch with the young Qbs. The Eagles had and still have the best Offensive staff in The NFL with Frank Reich & Doug Peterson along with several others on the staff.
This is what happens when you win a Super Bowl. Good luck John! The Vikings fans will be very happy.

  19. It’s always good to see new blood reaching the upper echelon of coaching jobs as opposed to the same old retreads going around in circles. Not that all of the “old guard” is bad; some of them were, and still are, quite good but a lot of new guys are having a lot of success in a lot of places as the game evolves.

  20. Two years ago the eagles added an new HC, OC, DC and QB coach. Many people criticized this. The Eagles front office will find a suitable replacement as they did 2 years ago. Congrats Vikings on waiting and selecting a good candidate.

  21. This is a great pick up, if only because it’s not Darrell Bevell. Anything on top of that is gravy on the ice cream cone.

What’s the old saying? If you can’t lose by fewer than 30 points, steal their guys?

    Lol.

The Vikes will be lucky to be 3rd in the division next year.

    ————

That’s what you all said last year. lol. The Vikings Roster is too good to be that low. I’m not predicting a division winner or anything. The QB is a question mark, but if Case Keenum could succeed with this team, chances are they can get a guy that can as well.

Meanwhile outside of Aaron Rodgers, almost the whole Green Bay roster has question marks. Besides a few decent defense ends (Daniels), and Ha ha Cinton Dix, that Defense is bad. You better hope Aaron Rodger puts up a million points. You’ll need them.

The Vikings have beaten the packers 4 out of the last 5 times. Keep that in mind.

Also since Zimmer has taken over..the Vikings and Packers have identical win-loss records in the last 4 years. Look it up!

    _________

First, he didn’t say he would have good chemistry with the QB, he said he would have good chemistry with the team. You see, in Minnesota the QB isn’t the whole team. Being a Packer fan, you wouldn’t understand that.

Second, what makes you think they haven’t decided on the QB yet? They aren’t just going to come out and announce it before they sign the guy (or guys), you know.

Once Aaron starts to play next year the Packers will be right back on top of their division.

    ———–

Like 2015 when they weren’t? lol. The Packers and Vikings have identical win-loss records in the last 4 years. BUt go ahead and assume the winner based on a QB and not the rest of the team.

Worked out great in the Superbowl huh? Last time I checked the better team with a backup QB won.

  25. Foles is not a god-send. Let’s be real. The Eagles OL and DL were some of the best in the NFL. If the Vikes get good line play next year, there will be another QB that will have success here. It doesn’t have to be Keenum.

  26. I was really hoping for Stefanski. I understand the temptation to chase after assistants from championship teams, but prefer the approach where leadership outlines a vision and then relentlessly builds towards that vision. I agree. I don’t like it thou. We never play well in Philly. Why can’t we play them here for once?

  28. I have to think this means that Reich is not going to be the guy in Indianapolis. Certainly Flip would’ve been next in line for the Eagles offensive coordinator job if Reich left, and you have to think he would’ve seen Philly as at least a slightly better option given the uncertainty at quarterback in Minnesota

    —————–

I just don’t get why it’s a step back? No the Vikings didn’t win the Superbowl, but they made the NFC CHampionship. They have gone 8-8 or better last three seasons and have 2 playoff appearances in the past 3 years. Also the old coordinator left because of success not failure. Pat Shummar had great success with this offense. This new OC would be getting the keys to a offense that was in the top 11 last year.

I love how Eagles fans win one superbowl, and get the biggest head. Before that one superbowl, the Eagles had just as much failure as the Vikings. 40+ years of failure. Lets see the eagles be good for a few years like the Packers, Patriots, Seahawks before talking so much crap.

  56. This was a brilliant move by Spielman, PERIOD! This guy will spend 4 or 5 years at OC and then take over for Mike Zimmer as Head Coach of the Vikings.
I don’t see any way the Vikings can lose in this situation.
Minnesota is going to try and get Cousins, and Cousins has already stated that Minnesota is his #1 choice, as long as the $$ is close. Trouble is he wants 154 MILLION!!! Sorry but nobody is worth that.
Keenum can be had for under 1/2 of that! Vikings can add several BIG name FA’s with the rest. I haven’t been that impressed with Cousins. He hasn’t won a single post season game.
Vikings get one more big name O-lineman, and 2 D linemen to get more pressure and Vikings will be challenging the Eagles big time. I hope Bridgewater can stay.
