Will Roger Goodell continue to announce the first-round draft picks?

So with the draft heading to Dallas and FOX ready to broadcast the event into millions of additional homes, an important question regarding the execution of the draft comes back to the front burner: Will Commissioner Roger Goodell continue to announce the first-round picks?

It’s one of the most public aspects of the Commissioner’s job. In recent years, however, the crowds at the draft have incessantly booed him. The bigger the crowd, the louder the boos.

Last year in Philadelphia, he heard it from 70,000 Eagles fans who had no particular reason to be upset with him. This year in a Dallas-area stadium that can hold more than 100,000, Cowboys fans still salty about the suspension of Ezekiel Elliott will have extra motivation to make themselves heard.

Goodell, for his part, embraces the opportunity to show everyone he can take it. He has, at times, opted to encourage fans to “bring it on,” and bring it on they do. Others in positions of power and influence within the NFL don’t like it, and for good reason. It’s a very bad look for the league to have the Commissioner booed so relentless and mercilessly — and for the Commissioner to openly challenge those booing him to boo him more with more passion and zeal.

Now that the draft will be televised by a broadcast network, the time has come for a not-so-graceful exit by the Commissioner from the task of announcing the picks. In his place, the NFL should hire a professional host who would either announce the picks or introduce others (like former players from a given team or a celebrity fan of that team) to announce each selection.

Steps already have been taken to thin the flock of boo birds. Last year in Philly, the Friday night activities began with Eagles legend Ron Jaworski accompanying Goodell. Jaworski was cheered; Goodell was once again booed. The next day, there was no sign of Goodell at the podium, and there was no booing.

With the 2018 draft destined to have both the biggest crowd and largest TV audience ever, the time has come to acknowledge that the Commissioner of the sport shouldn’t be serving as the master of ceremonies for the NFL’s biggest non-game night of the year.

  1. “It’s a very bad look for the league to have the Commissioner booed so relentless and mercilessly — and for the Commissioner to openly challenge those booing him to boo him more with more passion and zeal.”

    ————————-

There’s a book titled “Controversy Creates Cash.” That holds true in this situation, believe it or not.

  2. Definitely a bad look for the league to have one of their marquee events turned into a boo-fest by the presence of Roger Goodell. Past time for a change.

  3. When I worked in a factory my supervisor liked to be the guy who walked around and handed out our weekly pay checks. He wasn’t the owner or president or some accounting department gopher…just liked to be the magnanimous guy who gave us money.

  4. The union is obviously seeding these events with people who are there to boo.

I’ve never encountered an NFL fan who had any sort of hard negative opinion on him. Obviously astroturfing by the union.

  5. They should not tell anyone on the networks or anyone the pick before it done in any round. Ruins it for the fans that like to watch.Because there is always someone leaking that crap.

  6. The Commissioner sneering at fans and showing disdain is a childish look that may be seen by other cultures as indicative of the juvenile mentality of American football – hardly the image the owners of the NFL franchises want to project. Goodell is despised by fans, players and some owners though they grudgingly (and probably erroneously) credit him with the financial success of the league and have kept him as Commissioner. The owners continue to disregard the overall damage Goodell is inflicting on the game in pursuit of current revenues. Sad.

  7. Of course try to fake it about fan reactions…NFL continues to make itself look like an ever enlarging joke. It’s traditional to boo him. I don’t have any use for him and the whole draft thing is nothing but overhyped hype anyway!

  8. I find the booing amusing. It adds a WWE-like feel to an already circus atmosphere. What’s worse, booing the commish or cheering about a future bust just ’cause you’ve heard of him?

  9. I saw multiple media members attending the event for their first time comment on how those same fans booing are taking and taking pics with him. Like it’s some sort of game to boo for the picks.

Either way I’d be OK to stop having to hear it.

  10. They obviously couldn’t care less what the fans think because this joker still has a job, a job that pays 10’s of millions per year.

  11. “This year in a Dallas-area stadium that can hold more than 100,000”

    Really?
Do you honestly think there will be 100,000 people for the draft?

  12. It looks stupid for Goodell to announce the choices and then “hug” them. As soon as players walk off stage they become part of the “enemy”…the NFLPA. It’s stupid and phony to see him up their fawning and being booed. They’ll rip him in Dallas.

  13. Does anyone else always watch Goodell getting booed at the draft and imagine him as Vince McMahon?

  14. No question the only reason they gave Rodge his new 200 MILLIOn Ninny to Suck On to keep his Mouth Shut on the CTE Brain Trauma Files.

  15. Well the most demeaning case would be total silence when he announces the picks. Nothing like silence to make someone uncomfortable

Let Josh McDaniels do it. Just make sure you have a back-up in case he gets cold feet.

    OK that was funny…

  17. I’d be very surprised if that happened — if he backs out he’d look like a coward, and Rodger values his image as a tough guy.

  18. How about stopping the ‘we’re bringing in 150 different people to announce the pick, so sorry were at #93, we’re still waiting for #87 to come up to the podium to announce it’.

Optics don’t matter. The NFL can’t hide the hate for the commissioner and league office.

In reality it’s better to give the NFL fans ONE DAY to show them how they feel, rather then hide behind ‘optics’. Besides, as I laid out above, at least when Goodell does it, we don’t have to wait for the idiocy that is a different person for every pick announcing it.

  19. At least with that one day, they can get the FEEDBACK necessary to know they haven’t done their jobs well, and shouldn’t rest on their laurels.

If you destroy the feedback loops, then what builds in its place will be much worse on the back end.

Being seen as more out of touch, and allowing the league to be oblivious to the impact of their actions on fans, is not something they want to increase. It’s already at all time highs.

Goodell ducking for ‘optics’ reasons would only make the NFL worse going forward.

  20. “This year in a Dallas-area stadium that can hold more than 100,000”

Of course, assuming that they have the seating situation resolved before the event. They sort of neglected that the last time they held a big event

  21. .
In no other venue is a chief executive treated with such distain. However, it’s well deserved, as Goodell has shown nothing but contempt for the loyal NFL followers.
    .

  22. Goodell is no Paul Tagliabue. The former Commissioner was leaps and bounds more professional, more polished, and more dignified than this clown.

  23. Serious question: What exactly does one get in terms of entertainment experience from attending the draft? I don’t even watch it on TV any more but when I did it never looked like an exciting thing to be at. I get it if your kid was there getting drafted or maybe if it was free and was just down the street. But does anybody stand around impressing friends with “I was there in the room when so-and-so was drafted”?

  24. Who does’t love a good train wreck? The good ole boy club owners need to relax and put their egos to bed on this one. I’m sure Jerry Jones would LOVE to have Roger there announcing the picks amungst a chorus of Zeke fueled boos. When you’re on top of the mountain, take your shots like a man, don’t run and put a puppet in your place to take the heat.

  25. I find it fascinating that so many people literally, viscerally hate Roger Goodell. What the hell did he ever do to engender not just disagreement with his policies, which is understandable on some level, but actual hatred and vitriol to this degree? Did he murder somebody or something?

  26. They should Invite Hall of Famers for Every position.

And then have the Hall of Famer Announce for the position they played.

i.e. if its a QB then Brett Farve will announce etc…..

It will give the first round picks an extra reason not to be a bust.

Imagine if Goodell was replaced with Colin Kaepernick announcing picks. What would that reaction be?

    ———————-
Kaepernick would get a mixure, its Goodell that gets the unanimous reponse.

    ——————–

He is a duplicitous liar, who cries about the integrity of the game, when he himself is entirely without integrity. On top of that, he gets paid millions of dollars to do a job that he is too incompetent to do.

He is murdering the NFL, and has been since he first took over as the commissioner.

  29. on the other hand, how about a Goodell dunking booth? Charge $25 for up to 3 attempts, with the money raised going to charity (and I mean ALL the money raised….without some inadvertent accounting glitch that siphons off a majority of it). Could probably get a Riveron version going too, maybe a few others too?

  30. Only if he enjoys being booed and publicly shouted down.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Goodell could take a cue from his predecessors, but he doesn’t seem to have the necessary humility to do that. Neither Paul Tagliabue nor Pete Rozelle were ever disliked to the degree Goodell has been for the past several years.

Goodell has badly bumbled the anthem protests, and allowed the league to suffer a black eye in public perception, declining television ratings, and allowing a small number of players to hijack a the most prominent sport in America and turn it into a platform for so-called social justice issues. Rozelle would have never allowed that to happen.

Goodell is incompetent, which is why he is so unpopular with fans. It’d be best if he didn’t show up on draft day, if for no other reason than to allow fans to forget he’s still the commissioner.

That’s good, they’ll see what a nice city is like.

He is murdering the NFL, and has been since he first took over as the commissioner.

He does what the owners want him to do. That is why they just resigned him to a contract extension. This hate directed at Goodell is so misguided it’s laughable. Weak minded fans just want a target to direct their ire at without having to think about why they are doing it.

  33. The time has come for Roger Goodell to let someone else host the draft.

The time has come for QB’s to receive a percentage of the salary cap.

The time has come for the Redskins to change their name.

I’m seeing a pattern on here. Pro SJW talk is alive and well.

    ……….
Shouldnt the draft be about the NFL players coming in rather than false race narratives? SMDH people stuck on Kaep its so weird. He’s a black panther wannabe and his girlfriend is openly racist. Any reaction would not be large enough if Kaep announced.

I agree. Its baffling how many dont like him taking out the trash.

  36. With the Draft becoming the primetime spectacle that it is, why not have a celebrity host like the awards shows? I’d be down for the 2018 NFL Draft, hosted by John Cena.

  37. David Stern was also booed every year and on his last draft before he retired, he told fans “I can’t hear you” and “I was telling our international audience that the boo is a sign of respect.”

  38. “Did he murder somebody or something?”
    ______________

If you substitute “football” for “somebody” in your sentence then he’s well on his way to that. The only positive for anyone of his time as commissioner has been great financial reward for the owners–but that doesn’t help fans nor does it make the game any better. He’s bungled every investigation he’s tried, been caught lying on numerous occasions, etc. He was also the right hand man to Tags back in the 90s when the NFL was paying crackpot doctors to claim concussions were no big deal. And as the cherry on top, he has NEVER seemed to even like football. I picture him watching 3 plays then pulling out his phone to see how his investments are doing.

  39. He is single handedly destroying the league. Revenue down. Ratings down. Millions in handouts to whiny oppressed millionaire players. Refs that can’t decide what a catch is. “Parity” where quality of play has fallen off a cliff and there are maybe 4 decent teams in the playoffs every year. Teams constantly moving to random cities just for a new taxpayer gouged stadium. And insane ticket prices to prop it all up.

    BOO

I keep reading that it’s his job to take the heat for the owners, so why do people get so upset when fans do exactly that?

Regardless, I am fairly certain that the owners don’t instruct Goodell to be grossly incompetent with player discpline.

  41. Maybe the owners should ask WHY Goodell gets booed instead of trying to avoid the booing. I’ll tell you WHY he gets booed, because he’s incompetent, dishonest, and has made the NFL worse, that’s why.

  42. Selling tickets to a Super Bowl for seats that didn’t exist, lights going out at Super Bowl, field melting causing cancellation of Hall of Fame Game, bungled Bountygate, Deflategate, Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson investigations, re-defined “catch” so no one knows what it is, penalized teams for exceeding the salary cap in an uncapped year, botched the referee strike, mishandled the anthem protests — has the guy done ANYTHING right? Fans should boo him off the stage.

The owners don’t care, or they wouldn’t have re-upped the bozo.

  44. Fans should boo him off the stage.

Perfect example of how misguided the fan hate for Goodell is. He’s the Commissioner; not the God of all things football. Most of these issues you have presented are decided by various committees; not Goodell. As far as the “gate” controversies, the anger is mainly from the fans of those teams; not the NFL audience in general. The Bountygate scandal was proved to exist and there were enough question marks brought up in the Brady investigation to warrant a punishment. The Anthem protests were not against NFL rules so what is he supposed to do? If he did do something the criticism would then come from people who would condemn him for taking away free speech. This is really just another example of the pile on mentality people have in the social media universe. I bet most are just like this guy and really have no idea what Goodell is and isn’t responsible for. Social Media has taken away any semblance of intelligent thought. It’s all about making the funniest sarcastic comment with no objectivity what so ever.

  45. When Rozelle and Tagliabue were commissioner, things were very different.
There was no public discussion of domestic violence.
There was no BLM, or protests of the national anthem.
The league had very little knowledge of Ped’s.
    Concussion studies were just beginning.
Players had much less free time in the offseason and a longer, much tougher summer camp. Fewer arrests and gun related incidents.
Patriots had not been caught doing anything illegal yet.
If they had to deal with these issues on a daily basis like Goodell, you’d hate them just as much if not more.
