Running back Tre Mason has not played football during the last two seasons, but he’s reportedly trying to get back into the game.

Matt Zenitz of reports that people close to Mason have reached out to NFL teams recently to let them know that Mason wants to play again. Zenitz adds that teams are thus far reluctant to open the door to Mason because of the incidents that preceded his departure from the Rams.

Mason had repeated issues with police in 2016 and landed on the Rams’ reserve/did not report list when they opened training camp that summer. During one of the visits from police to Mason’s home, his mother told them that her son had a “10-year-old’s mindset” after a change in behavior following the 2015 season.

Mason was a third-round pick by the Rams in 2014 and ran for 972 yards on 254 carries over two seasons with the team.

Mason’s advocates have reportedly told teams that he’s in a better place mentally now than he was when things went off track a couple of years ago. It remains to be seen if anyone will try to find out for themselves. .

  1. Unfortunately, all it takes is asking Mason about his release by the Rams and he starts sounding like he’s gone of the deep end again.

  2. Less than 1,000 yards over two seasons with the Rams and all his off-the-field issues? That ship has sailed.

  3. He’s probably broke right now which is why he’s attempting a comeback but I’m not sure resuming his football career is the best course of action for him at the moment. He’d probably be better off getting his life in order. If indeed he “has the mindset of a 10 year-old”, risking several concussions will do him more harm than good.

    Just sayin’…

  4. Idk why everyone is so quick to write this guy off. He did pretty good his rookie year. Given his age, the fact that he has very low mileage on his body/legs, and the fact that he already has NFL experience, I expect at least one or a few teams to take a look. What’s the worst that could happen? That they realize during the interview process his head still isn’t where it needs to be? He was really good in college, too. I hope he get’s another chance. Hey Buffalo…

  5. I have no idea what is up with him now, but he ran like a beast at Auburn. I thought he’d be a stud in the NFL, and did seemingly do well in part-time work. I wouldn’t be upset if the Bucs gave him a tryout.

  6. I seem to kind of remember Mom was blaming concussions for change. Now they want him to play again??

  7. Literally just saw him at LA Fitness last week hitting the weights hard. Hopefully he gets back in.

  8. In other words when told to make a list of his ten closest friends to set up an information meeting, mason decided life insurance sales was not for him.
